PIEMAN RESULTS Rd 19 v Melbourne

13-7! With unaccustomed accuracy we put away the Demons and that meant 13 goals and 9 different goalkickers for the Pieman.

Pieman Player of the Week

Mitch Hannan redeemed himself somewhat in the eyes of his critics with an important negating job on May and a couple of goals into the bargain, enough for PPotW. Caleb Daniel has been finding the goals a bit lately and his handicap keeps falling accordingly. He'll be in the 20s next week.

Highest possible score this week was 208 (3x Hannan,2x Daniel). Highest actual score was 122.

Pieman Player of the Year

No big changes. Bruce still well out in front. Caleb moved up to 6th.

The KELVIN

There was a nice spread of scores this week. No donuts and no big margins. No substitutes required either.

The Kelvin winner was VL3OJ (122) narrowly over DogBites (120). VL3OJ did it with a 20 point bonus for having five different goalscorers, one of three to achieve that this week.

The PIEMAN

We still have Wocka in the lead but Vinegar Mess has made significant inroads and is now only 36 points behind. Third-placed Floridog and fourth-placed ossie_21 also made up ground on the leader and are now within 100 points.

Pieman Substitutes Rd 19 v Melbourne

If substitutes are required for tonight’s game they are in order:
  • Ugle-Hagan
  • Macrae
  • Johannisen
  • Weightman
  • Daniel

Hey DW, my team was set a few weeks back with Bruce, Weightman, Bont….. and Wallis and Hannan?

I went from your post here - for my sub for Wallis - shouldn’t i have had Ugle-Hagan as my sub instead of Richards?

Also no Daniel in my team, but Hannan?

It's a complex one Josh as I have had to go back over the last five rounds to review all the changes but I think it's all in order.

Let's step through it ...

Your last posted team was in Rd15 with this post:

Naughton
Bruce
Weightman
Bont
Hannan

You didn't post any selections after that so from there on they were all carryover teams with subs coming in at different times.

In Round 17 Naughton was out with concussion so you got the first sub on the list, Wallis.

In Round 18 Wallis and Hannan were omitted so you got Daniel and Richards as subs. See this post which summarised the many subs that round. (I've bolded your bit.)

Pieman Substitutes

There were 20 Pieman subs needed in 12 of the 15 carryover teams. Daniel (39 pts) featured 14 times. Happy days for some!

  • businessfish - Daniel for Libba and Richards for Wallis
  • Dishlicker - Richards for Libba
  • Fossie 32 - Daniel for Wallis
  • Jeff 1975 - Daniel for Libba
  • josh the gent - Daniel for Wallis and Richards for Hannan
  • lateniter - Daniel for Libba and Richards for Scott
  • ossie_21 - 2x Daniel for 2x Wallis :)
  • ScottyDog - Daniel for Scott
  • ScragCity - 2x Daniel for 2x Libba
  • theAthenian - Daniel for Wallis
  • Vinegar Mess had nearly his entire team substituted - 2x Daniel for 2x Wallis, Richards for Scott, B Smith for Hannan
  • VL3OJ - Daniel for Libba

Then in Round 19 all of your Rd 18 team played so there was no further change. Here are your teams in summary over that period, with subs highlighted (and the player they replaced directly above them):

Note also that when you get a sub he stays in for any carryover teams. Your Pieman team doesn't revert to its previous line-up even though your original player may have returned to the selected WB side (eg Naughton was only out 1 week as was Hannan but they don't automatically come back in to your team). It would become just too complex to keep track of and manage that for around 40 Pieman teams as I'm sure you'd appreciate. The sub remains a part of your team until you post a new side - or until he is left out of the side himself (as happened above with Wallis).

I posted that info as a clarification in this post back in April.

I hope that answers all your questions. In general I really don't like having to deal with subs as they create more complexity for the punters and a lot more work for me! However they are obviously necessary if we are going to allow people to have carryover teams. And also to ensure every team has five starters every week, which I think all would agree is an improvement on previous years where LTIs would sometimes decimate Pieman teams and suck all the fun out of the comp.

As the season has progressed it has revealed a few gaps in the rules which I have tried to resolve each time they are discovered. For the first year of this new format (Pieman II) it's obviously a bit of a learning exercise and I can't pretend to have anticipated every possible circumstance.

Although it has created a fair bit of work for me I didn't mind your enquiry because it has helped verify whether the system is working as well as it can.

One conclusion I have drawn from this is that if anybody thinks they have been dudded they will need to let me know before the next game. If I only hear about it weeks down the track it could in theory change all the outcomes for all the subsequent weeks - a real sliding doors moment. You can imagine how much work it would be correcting teams from 3-4 weeks ago, recalculating and re-posting Kelvin winners, progessive scores, etc.

I'll have a think about that but will probably post a notice about a "statute of limitations" during the week.

No worries DW.

I actually thought i had named Wallis as a selection when Naughton was out. My bad.

Either way, from there it got confusing because Wallis came straight out, along with Hannan. And then Hannan then came back in!

You do a great job with The Pieman comp, please don’t change anything :)
