The Worst Trade Ever

Yeah, woo-ee-oo and how did West Coast go in those same six years.

Delisted Matt Clape (former National Draft pick 9) premiership Carlton 1995
Traded Dean Laidley for Pick 8 -Paul Symmons premiership North Melbourne 1996
1997 Matt Connell premiership Adelaide traded by West Coast for Pick 44 - Jeremy Dwyer
1998 Matt Connell premiership Adelaide.
2000 Pick 27 (Ted Richards) - trade for Michael Prior = 2 premierships Sydney

Yeah those guys were just as instrumental in winnings premierships as Norm Smith medalists, best & fairest players and in some cases some of the best players to ever play for their clubs in Mcleod, Hodge, Mitchell, Lloyd, Bell etc.

Struck a deal with Essendon which meant they missed out on Matthew Lloyd = 1 premiership
Bit Harsh, Fremantle needed mature Bodies and not 16 year olds. Plus i don't think Fremantle ever had access to Lloyd in their situation

Carlton win this thread. Stephen O'Reilly for a 1st and 3rd round pick. He was on a big contract too, which helped contribute to salary cap pressure that a)saw Aaron Hamill leave a year later, and b)led to us trying to pay some older blokes who stuck around longer than expected (after we unexpectedly made the gf) in brown paper bags -leading to massivr salary cap fines and loss of picks.

You can make a solid case O'Reilly directly cost a 1st and 3rd round pick + Hamill, and indirectly cost 3 more 1st round picks and a 2nd rounder plus a million dollar fine

He played 12 games for us and then retired

Fremantle's collective trades or non-trades have resulted in a lot premierships for other clubs.

Traded Norm Smith medalist Andrew Mcleod for Chris Groom = 2 premierships

Struck a deal with Essendon which meant they missed out on Matthew Lloyd = 1 premiership

Delisted Peter Bell = 2 premierships

Traded pick 5 to Brisbane (Luke Power) for Adrian Fletcher + 26 = 3 premierships

The infamous Croad + McPharlin trade which gave Hawks Norm Smith medalist Hodge and Mitchell = 4 premierships

Within their first 6 years they helped teams win or establish 12 premierships.

Thankfully after 2001 they got better.

Although there are some other ripping trades that didn't end up gifting premierships, such as trading pick 3 + Phil Matera for David Hynes

And trading Bell back in for Jess Sinclair + pick 6, 8 & 37!

My understanding of this one is that they never had access to him. Clubs who lost players to Freo were compensated by being able to pick a 16 year old. Essendon were shrewd and pushed a couple out to get a pick. They were the lowest on the ladder out of clubs who lost players, therefore they got first choice and wisely selected Lloyd.

You're right, Essendon obviously knew who was coming through and wanted access to those young players...

Prior to the 1994 draft, Fremantle arranged a deal with Essendon where they would recruit three players, all originally from Western Australia, and agree not to recruit any uncontracted players from any team that finished below Essendon in 1994. This would ensure that Essendon would have the first choice of the 16-year-olds in the compensation draft.

West Coast did a similar thing in 1996, we traded Shane Bond and Brayden Lyle to Port for peanuts in return for them signing Ian Downsborough as an uncontracted player and not signing any players from teams below us, allowing us to get pick 1 which netted Gardiner.

Joel Smith was an absolute beauty, he can't be penalized for that horrible injury. Don't think he was the same after that, but was still a very good player for Hawthorn.

Two AAs whilst playing at the Hawks.

Pretty much. That was how the compo system worked at the time. The club receiving to compo pick could choose a 16 year old - effectively raiding the next year's draft. The 16 year old were not available to Freo.

Sorry Paul Symonns and Jeremy Dwyer and Michael Prior couldn't get you over the line in those years.

Dunno what SOS was thinking here, Palmer isn't an underrated depth player and Carlton are literally just taking on a big contract for no reason.
Possibly to meet the minimum salary cap requirement? Or just doing GWS a favour for giving Carlton two former top 10 picks for scraps?

Also, +1 for Stephen O'Reilly being the worst trade ever. Took the club nearly 15 years to recover from that...

If Tippet was a trade then that

If not, Judd and Fev were both terrible

Sorry Paul Symonns and Jeremy Dwyer and Michael Prior couldn't get you over the line in those years.

We had guys like Clape, Connell and Laidley leave due to lack of opportunities in a strong team, and go on to find success elsewhere.

As opposed to Freo, who let guys like Bell, Burton, McLeod go for whatever reason and saw them have success elsewhere while they continued propping up the ladder.

Not sure why you'd want to push the topic...

The whole 2005 North trade period involving Hay wins.

Lose a pick 8 Motlop after 47 games and picks 13, 18, 29. Motlop was a pick 8 received in the Peter Bell trade.

Get Hay 8 games, freaking 4 game Dan McConnell, Mark Powell who never played and wanted to throw himself in a ditch preseason, Rawlings 3 games.

Meanwhile some of the picks that passed hands were used on Hurn and Birchall.

The only thing North achieved was somehow getting a player Rawlings and a pick upgrade from the Dogs for pick 46 where pick 43 ended up as Swallow who was very good pre injury.

Tippet's a joke right now, his contract just cost them Tom Mitchell, he's ruined the club for a decade.
If Franklin was a trade it would be right up there.
Ruined the club for a decade?

Geez if making GF and Prelim finals every year is ruining the club then I am sure a lot more clubs would be looking to do similar trades.

Doesn't matter which way you spin it the Stephen O'Reilly trade by Carlton will forever and a day be the worst trade in VFL/AFL history

As pointed out by Weaver long ago:
That's easy. Pick 16 and 46 for Stephen O'Reilly who played 12 games for Carlton. AND they had to pay him illegally outside the cap. AND he blew the whistle on them. AND they had to pay a fine. AND they got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. AND it meant that their mulit-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft and Dennis Pagan sacking

Lovett for pick 16, on traded for Mark Williams. Has to be one of the worst in recent times. The infamous Veale Deal was cursed and no one really came out on top, but at least the players involved played some games. Aside from Williams' blink-and-you've-missed-it cameo early last year that's two clubs giving up a first round pick for nothing.

Liam Jones to Carlton for pick 46 - Caleb Daniel, alias little Diego. He will be the next footy God. I predict Little Diego to be a super star when he gets a bit of bit and strenght. still a teddy bear imo. wait till he gets the muscles of a mature footballer. absolute genius of a footballer. though, i miss liam jones. no flogs at the moment on our list. though cloke could become one, ... :)
