Should give an avg crowd to a game figure rather than a total meaningless figure.

Then see which round has the highest, far better.

That is a ridiculous statement. Pies/Blues has a lot more history than Hawks/Cats. The supporters hate for each other goes back generations. It was carlton who originally gave up one match to allow Collingwood to enter the VFA. Hawks/Cats will never be anything like Pies/Blues.

I think you'll find that while there has always been a rivalry between the two, until 1970, Carlton's biggest rivals were Richmond and Essendon. Collingwood had a bigger rivalry with Richmond than Carlton.

Since 1970 it was consolidated by further GF's and finals. But really in the last 15-20 years, it's mainly been about the media making a big deal about it.

It's also interesting that years in the wilderness has meant that the hatred Richmond used to generate when i was young (and well prior) seems to have been long forgotten.

The extra game doesn't diminish the significance of breaking the highest drawing round ever, for the AFL growth is about quantity>quality.

A 50K average over 5 games (250,000) is not better than a 41K average over 9 games.

Yeah but think about it, without the two expansion clubs you would essentially have had the following changes to the current round:

Minus - GWS v Bulldogs (7K) & Brisbane v GC (27K)
Plus - Brisbane v Bulldogs (surely around 20K to low 20s, average at the Gabba for this match is actually 26K)

Meaning in all probability we may have just missed the record by about 10K. Still a brilliant result that stands with any round ever.

extraordinary achievement, especially in a round were (nationally) the league was competing with NRL, NRL SOO, a novelty NRL game in Perth, Rugby Test matches, and Wimbledon... plus scheduling a game in Canberra: its freaking unbelievalbe... carrying on about it being 8 or 9 games is utterly pedantic: and to a large exten irrellevant. Its STILL the highest ever attended round. and I dare say if Richmond v North had been played at the G (swapping with Sydney v Melb at the Dome) you could have easily piled another 10-20k on top again. Infact the biggest contstraint on crowds these days is capacity. Perth, and Melbourne are regulalry hamstrung by being unable to meet gernal public and general adimittance demand .

Best attendance in the how many years we've had 18 teams?
Yawn.
Yawn? Its been 2 years, and why isnt this a good achievement? Even if you have a passing interest in the health of our game you have to be pleased its still able to break records. Yawn? The revenue for the clubs is fantastic! Yawn? In the face of stiff competition, our indiginous game is thriving! YAwn? the only yawn around here is cynical w***ers who arent pleased by anything.

40k at the twilight game on sunday with 1 interstate team is a fair effort as well.

Surprising really, considering there was a match up between cellar dwellers and 2 games where you could put your house on who was going to win in the sunday games
