First Half Comments:
Second half comments:
I absolutely stand by my comments on the first half in the gameday thread
When West Coasts pressure was on we crabbed, went backwards continously to get space, spread, and then "ever so quietly" go forward
In the second half West coasts pressure dropped, we had a good lead and suddenly we play more agressive, run the lines, direct footy.
Here's the crux of my issue:
1. In finals & when one on one pressure is applied we go into "safe mode" and play safe footy by going backwards, sideways ......but rarely forwrd.
This will not win finals matches
2. St Kilda beat us by playing a back court press ......and our defenders not being use to not having time and space paniced under pressure.
3. In fact because we play this "toss the ball around, switch play footy " our players are most comfortable with time & space ........but panic when teams play one on one .......which is how the finals will be played.
4. In tight today when we tried to run and carry across the lines in the second half we made some horrible fumbles and poor skill errors ........we got away with it and recovered against a side of West Coasts calibre .......but not so against the top 4 sides who will make us pay.
A good win today ......yeah absolutely .........but wins against very ordinary sides mask some real sins
Maric: His ,marking has improved stunningly in the last 8-10 matches and makes him so much more valuable.
He seems to reading the flight so much better and is jumping into the contest with the ball in front of his eyes .......previously he was going up one handed or under the flight, hopelessly reading the flight
Sellar: Poor game today and IMO nows the time, if Griffin can step up, to send Sellar back to the SANFL.
He fumbled a lot and his hands in close and marking contests were "hard" with ball often hitting his hands and bouncing off.
The missing of that simple chest mark symptomatic that his concentrations is still not what it should be.
Porplyzia: class act ......still would like to see him in the midfield rotations as he doesn't fumble, has great vision, and is instinctive in see the right options.
Douglas: Much better 4 qtr performance ........just would like him to hurt the opposition with his disposals more than he does.
But tackling was great ......and he seemed to cover the ground quicker today.
Knights: Noticed his knee taping was off and he seemed to cover the ground better and jumping for marks.
Is better in the marking contest than I had realised
Goodwin/Macleod: they really are in vintage form
The main thing I notice is that they nearly always go long & direct
with penetrating kicks and run across the lines ........in other words even at 32 YO they still hurt the oppositions ........We don't seem to have ready made replacements ........Dangerfield and Mackay the exceptions
Mackay: looked proppy in the first half ......seemed to not want to stretch out to protect the leg.
Good to get that game under his belt and will be confident for getting thru
Hentschell: Gee he's a smart footballer and with another game to go b4 the finals seems to be getting more confident with each week.
That chest mark where he just plainly outsmarted his opponent was superb .......he's reading the ball off the boot very well ATM
Does look a yard slower though
Vince: He's the man with question marks ......give him time & space he'll cut you apart ........but put a tag on or play him one on one .......the jury is our as to whether he can work hard enough or has the skills to win contested ball.
Symes: Steady performance .........but I'd suggest most oppositions would be comfortable with the ball in his hands
This CRAP football ......and if we play this way in the finals we'll go out in straight games
Craig said halfway thru the season we needed to take the game on instead of playing safe ......and we did beautifully for a while
Well SAFE SAFE footy is back
Our players CANNOT play one on one footy .......we are fine when we have space to think .......but teams like St Kilda, Collingwood, and Geelong who WON"T give you that space and UNDER PRESSURE OUR PLAYERS PANIC
We will win this game .....against no real opposition
But Finals time this gamestyle is CRAP !!!!!!
No wonder we are ranked 15th for forwrd efficiency ......we give the opposition so much time to clog our forwrd lines up

Loved his work around the ground.
