Yep!
Some players play tall, others can't.

Gillies can't be the player we want because he's only 192cm!

Scarlett, who is renowned as the best FB in the last 10-15 years is 192cm.
Vertical leap is probably a better measure of a players "height". Croad had it in spades. Also need the weight and smarts to know how to position yourself so you don't get out bodied in a one-on-one contest.

That whole point is, as everyone seems to keep reminding us, we need a gorilla FB. So it does not matter what height Gillies is, if his arms don't hang down to his knees, he is not a gorilla. And therefore not required.

My question is, is can he play Full Back? If he can't I wouldn't bother with him. We need a genuine KPP defender anything less is what we have now. We have good third talls. Gibson, Stratton, Gilham is a very good trio. Imagine them around a Croad or Rutten type.

I've asked it before in this thread, or perhaps another one, but I'd love someone to show me where our club has ever stated that we are looking for a gorilla backman.

Come on mate we all know BF posters know more about our requirements than the footy department.

They haven't... Ever... They back themselves to compete without one... For good reason.. Yet most keyboard warriors seem to know better and think otherwise...

It is indeed fortunate that the club knows more about our needs than BF posters.

We already have 2 gorillas.

Schoey will be a man mountain. The timing of his ultimate maturity and our premiership window don't quite appear to be aligned but stranger things have happened with players having break out seasons. His year this year was majorly interrupted with injury. Given a full preseason and another 15 games he should have improved again come finals time. Getting pantsed in the finals series this year will be good for his determination as well assuming he has real pride in himself as a player.

Roughy is our other potential gorilla defender. He will need some time to learn the craft but he could be very classy up back. Needs to learn to use his strength in the one on ones but no doubt it is only a time thing for him. He looks so much more comfortable in defence.

He did for a bit in this game. Probably didn't want to again. If only he had kicked straight.

Great video :thumbsu:

Just to put the Hawks "backline woes" into perspective, is that a top quality forward tearing the best full back of the last 10 years a new one? And we wonder why a 20yo CHB got a bit of a touch up in the final against the Cats.

Apparently for backmen every now and then it happens to the best of them.

Hawks do not need another 4th string KPD and that is what Gillies is at Geelong, behind Taylor, Lonegon and Scarlett. Scarlett is a superstar, Taylor is very good and Lonegon I rate also, but neither Taylor or Lonegon are the next Scarlett so I doubt Gillies is eaither.

Hawks need to start trading for the future (kids) as well as balancing the now (Gunsten).

That's strange logic. Especially considering Gillies was taken in the same draft as Shane Savage.

"Gillies will not be any good, because he's younger and currently behind more experienced players"

Tom Lonergan is no "gorilla"

What actually constitutes a gorilla?

People say Glass and Rutten are and they are 192cms 96kg and 192cms 101kg repectively.

Tom Lonergan is 197cm 98kgs and Gillies 192cm 88kgs and is young and will put on weight with age.

It's funny that people's perception of gorilla backmen differ when they have similar attributes.

At 197 and 98 he's pretty close, closer than our equivalents.

Ultimately though it's not pure size so much as the capacity to do that job, as the Croad example shows. Maybe Schoey or Roughy could do it, we'll see. Personally I think it's a deficiency.

It's not pure size. It's body strength plus one-on-one defensive ability, eg Croad.
