The best players named in the VFL seem to be an absolute lottery. I suspect we name our own and that they play games with who are named.

Can you tell me what you thought of McCarthy's game? What position did he play and how did he look?

McCarthy played mainly on the wing but at times he played HFF/FP type role and also spent a bit of time on the back flank but seemed to have been told to push forward. He was also given considerate time on the bench which i assume is just managing his comeback from injury.

He played a good game considering it was his 1st game back from injury, started off slowly and looked to be a bit lost for a while before he got into the swing of things. He showed off his great pace and skills though as the game went by and had about a 10 possie 3rd quarter. He layed some hard tackles and flattened a franga player at a ball up. Did a beautiful placement kick into the collingwood 50 chipping it centimeter perfect over the frankston players to the waiting/ leading collingwood player to set up a goal.

Only negatives for the day were he looked like he was lacking a bit of fitness, and the fact he gave about 5 frees away for the game for a variety of reasons.

But he got better and better as the game went on, and wouldn't look to out of place in a collingwood lineup this year. Definately has an AFL ready body the only thing lacking would be fitness but with Malthouse's high rotation game plan could easily find himself getting a game soon.

FWIW I went to school and played football with Jarrad Grant (Bulldogs No. 5 pick) and John and while i consider Grant to be more talented, he has many risks associated with him. I would have drafted John over him i was a recruiting manager, he has everything going for him: speed, disposal, hard worker and he is a fantastic contested mark for his size. He used to play KP forward in about Yr10 and dominated that, i think COllingwood are onto a gem with him and i can really just not see him not making it.

Thanks mate thats great information.

Does anyone have any news on Shannon Cox yet?

Just curious, what risks are you referring to with Grant?

I'd prefer not to go into detail but I think he'll struggle to put on weight, and i'm not sure that he had the right attitude for getting the best out of himself but I'm sure an AFL club will hopefulley change that. etc

Just to clarify; this was John McCarthy's 2nd game back. He did, however, play limited minutes last week presumably to ease him in. :thumbsu:

Many thanks mate! :thumbsu:

Sounds very promising.

Bryan will only play if Fraser or Wood are injured - no other reason.

Like many other I would expect Wood to be rested within the next couple of weeks for maybe a week or 2. And same goes for the ass end of the season.

Would you like to put money on it?

$100 says Bryan gets a game injuries aside.

that is absolute crap in the best dyas didnt seem to do all that much yesterday and nicholls wasnt named in the best?? he dominated the second half his kicking was absolutely magnificent except for one...and iles was bloody brilliant all day he played really well barely sore him get tackled he is just so evasive. I thought that Wellingham would have been in the best he ran hard all day and picked up 20 od touches he is pretty classy from what i saw yesterday.
Well that is very encouraging considering the other very ordinary reports about magoo players. Wahat did you think of Cook, stanley and Tooves?

Disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AFL Clubs get their way again. Seriously injury someone and get away with it.

If it was a player fro, a VFL Stand Alone club would have got at least 6 weeks.

I don't know what he did, but if there was clear video evidence that made the VFL drop the charge then it would appear he didn't do anything excessivley wrong

I've never understood why a player's subsequent injury should have anything to do with the suspension. The same action, whether resulting in a season-ending injury or no injury at all, should cop the same punishment.

Present the footage son, so we can all judge.

Ya gotta feel for anyone losing their season so early in the year, but unless Cox threw him into the fence while outside of play, then there is no reason for any action.

Unfortunately for you, you have been owned by the Collingwood Football Club. We are currently taking up to six cameras on the ground tracking play. We probably have multiple angles of the alleged incident.

In respect to VFL reports, I'd go so far as to say that any player we've ever had reported at that level has been suspended. It's not like we have had diplomatic immunity!

So again, how's about you present some evidence. We did, and it wasn't taken any further.

Because the impact of the action is taken into account.

Would you think that if you fire a bullet at someone and it misses them it should carry the same penalty as if you fire a bullet at someone and it kills them?

Same action, different result. One has a far greater impact.

Reward people for bad aim? :D

Not quite the right analogy.

To make it a bit clearer, I believe the suspension should take into account the likely injury resulting from an action.
Thus, the attempted murder in your case, despite no harm actually being done, would still carry a very heavy penalty since the likely harm done is great.

On the flip side, if I trip someone on during a football match, should I receive a much harsher penalty than usual if they just happen to break their wrist as a result? That's the point I'm trying to get across.

I don't think the results of actions should be taken into account, at least in terms of time missed from football. "Likely" outcome of injury in terms of severity or danger to the victim is a reasonable measure though, as mydarlingclementine suggests.

The thing is, highly inoccuous incidents can lead to season-ending injuries. Look at some of the ACL injuries this season, such as for Mitch Brown and Brad Dick in the one pre-season match.

However on the flip side, if the intent is the same, ie. to injure someone, why should a player get a lighter sentence for "attempting to strike"? Reward them for having poor boxing skills?

To follow from King Woodie's analogy, apt or not, I would say that certainly someone intending to murder by gunshot (and actually firing the gun in this attempt) should be given the same sentence as someone who successfully murdered someone by the same means. It's illogical to reward them due to factors outside of their control.
