Is Finals about fairness or maximising attendance?

Fairness: Geelong gets a home final (KP)
Maximising Attendance: Geelong gets a saturday arvo final at the G

Can't pick and choose mate.

It’s already been established that Geelong will play a home game at the MCG in finals. In the history of the AFL how many finals has Geelong played at Kardina Park?

But your comment in regard to maximising attendance is also massively flawed. The last time Geelong & Richmond played in a qualifying final on a Friday night the crowd was 95,028 (the highest qualifying final crowd in history)

How many more supporters could they possibly get by moving the game to a Saturday afternoon?

Yes, Geelong v Richmond or Collingwood v Essendon would pack out the MCG at 7:30am on a Wednesday morning so not sure it really matters what timeslot they play it.

The Thursday final *s up the breaks for the rest of finals.

Working backwards and assuming favourites win, 1st plays 3rd Friday night in the prelim while 2nd plays 4th at some point on Saturday.
Therefore the Friday night semi must be 3rd vs 6th while Saturday night should be 4th vs 5th to ensure even 7 day breaks.
Hence, week 2 can be made 7 day v 6 day break affairs by having either of the following Week 1 schedules

Friday night - 2nd v 3rd
Saturday afternoon - 1st v 4th
Saturday night - 6th v 7th
Sunday afternoon - 5th v 8th

OR

Friday night - 2nd v 3rd
Saturday afternoon - 6th v 7th
Saturday night - 1st v 4th
Sunday afternoon - 5th v 8th

Saturday September 7, 2019

Sunday September 8, 2019
Brisbane Lions vs West Coast Eagles, 3:20pm, GABBA

As others have said in this thread (and across BigFooty), unfortunately we'll be stuck playing Friday night, despite it being well known that a good chunk of our supporters can't make it to these games, especially in Melbourne. If the ladder ends up falling this way and we are the 'home' team, it should at least be played on the Saturday to maximise the chance for Geelong supporters to attend

Swap Friday and Sunday on your preferred one and you got a good one. You can’t (well, shouldn’t) have QF losers coming off a day shorter break than the EF winners

A day game in September in Queensland would spell disaster for the recovery of the losing side. Especially if it was on the Sunday guaranteeing a 6 day turnaround.

Actually, that's a good point. Also gives the 'fairytale' team of this years finals the prime timeslot, which the AFL would love for ratings

Geelong final should be on the Saturday.

They should schedule Coll v Ess for the Friday night, would be the highest attended and rated game of the weekend.
The only issue is say Geelong lose and need to play a semi final, they will have a shorter break than their opponent.

The higher ranked team on the ladder deserves a longer break so that's why the AFL prefers to play Qualifying Finals ahead of Elimination Finals.

Can Hawks beat West Coast?

That would throw a cat amongst the pigeons so to speak

Well the interesting thing about that and a number of other games is the timing. If Bulldogs v Adelaide was played before West Coast v Hawthorn, Hawthorn's finals chance could well have been snuffed out (with a Dogs win).

As it stands, Hawthorn will be a live chance to play finals no matter what, heading in to the game on Saturday night.

Would have cause some of the weirder finals implications. Could mean a West Coast v Hawthorn elimination final if some other results fall for it - namely Collingwood, Richmond and Adelaide winning. Seems like a completely ridiculous scenario, but it's actually plausible, if unlikely.

This is spot on for mine.

Just think there may be another twist to come before the end of the season

It’s already been established that Geelong will play a home game at the MCG in finals. In the history of the AFL how many finals has Geelong played at Kardina Park?
Yes, the MCG was used for finals when it was a neutral venue, and by far the largest home ground to 1 (and from 1960: 2) of the 12 VFL teams. It's now home to at least 6 VIC teams, and only 4 teams don't get to play home finals at their venue of choice. 14 do. Times are changing, won't be long until all 18 clubs get their venue of choice.
But your comment in regard to maximising attendance is also massively flawed. The last time Geelong & Richmond played in a qualifying final on a Friday night the crowd was 95,028 (the highest qualifying final crowd in history)
How many home fans got in? Surely you'd want to ensure at least a 50/50 split? Otherwise if GWS host Richmond/Pies/Dons in a final, we should move it to the MCG to fit everyone in? It would be hypocrisy not to. A saturday arvo games ensure the maximum number of home fans (Geelong) would be able to attend. Fairness, that is the AFLs game after all.
How many more supporters could they possibly get by moving the game to a Saturday afternoon?
More Geelong supporters. That's the point. Otherwise we may as well finish 4th, give you the home locker room, call the coin toss and let you bang those jungle drums (oh wait, the AFL did give you that). 1st by Proxy. Must be nice.
