WRFL Div 2 Discussion 2024

Spent the day yesterday at North Sunshine v Laverton, there is some good people at North, doing their best.

Told their numbers this year are much better, even at training. They always fill 2 sides, incredibly.

Their obvious issue is quality, they're obviously battling. Heard how a few people have done a lot of work to re-establish 2 junior teams and working hard on their culture.

I think they are genuine in trying to build their club. Have a marquee on the outer side with some boisterous supporters, and talked to current players who grew up there. Had a couple of nice beers and food there, so go North.

Having said that, they do need to try and improve their competiveness, but who am I or anybody else, to tell them to fold or merge?

From Laverton's point of view, they now have a core of decent players and they have improved. Not long ago, these two teams used to trade wins against each other, Lavo now a mile in front. Could make it 3 in a row playing Heights at Merton Street next week.

Predictions Round 7

Nth Footscray 56 - Newport 186
Tarneit 13 - Albion 226
Braybrook 133 - Suns 78
Sunshine 265 - Laverton 8
Heights 37 - West F 145
North Sunshine 6 - Whyndhamvale 257
Rams 43 - Albanvale 174

What is everyone else thinking?

Can't argue with your tips, think North will get a bit closer to Newport, Heights a bit closer to West, Lavo a bit closer to Sunshine and the Rams a bit closer to Albanvale but agree all others.

A good D2 last year now lopsided not helped with a poor draw by the League which has seen the 3 weakest teams North Sunny, Tarneit and the Rams all playing the top 4 by Round 6 and mostly doubling up again later in the year. Nonsensical.

Its a fairly obvious round for tipping this week. However, didnt Heights beat West earlier in the year? Also expecting Braybrook v Suns to be a good game and could go either way.

Heights haven't played West yet. They've only beaten Tarneit.

West knocked Heights out in last year's finals so there should be some good spite at that game

100 year celebrations for Laverton FNC today at Merton St. and they wore their original Port Adelaide prison bar style jumpers. Good crowd there, many dressed in Lavo merchandise which looked like it arrived during the week. Think they've spent their whole 100 years at Merton St., anyone know what comp they played in considering they pre-date both the old FDL and WSFL?

Good vibe down there, never had live music being played during the game before, maybe timekeepers next to the music didn't appreciate it though.

4th win for Lavo going well, kicked the highest score this season against Sunshine last week bar Albion. Game played today in good spirits in fact I haven't seen any problems there for many years, a credit to them.

Tarneit kicked 11 goals probably appreciated playing a fellow ex D3 from 2023. Had some decent players, hopefully improve next season.

Potato cakes 7/10 at the canteen, coffee 6/10.

Played at quite a few clubs and had the best time and met the best people down there at Merton Street. Speaking of the food, the late great Richie Goring (former president and probably saved the club) made up a dim sim roll which was 10/10. Spewin I wasn’t able to attend today!

Thank you DTID.
You have just deprived me of two hours of my life, but I have enjoyed researching your Laverton question.

The ‘Werribee District Football League,’ was formed in 1919 at the conclusion of the First World War.

In 1924 the Laverton Football Club was formed and played its first game in the Werribee DFL.

Teams that participated in the WDFL, although many arrived and left during different periods included: -
Combined Churches
Newport United
Williamstown Rovers
Wyndham
Little River
Newport

  • Altona City (WFNL)
  • Braybrook (WFNL)
  • ICI Deer Park, now Deer Park (EDFL)
  • Lara (GDFL)
  • Laverton (WFNL)

  • Irish National Foresters
  • Metro Farm
  • Werribee South
  • Services
  • These four clubs united to form Werribee VFA in 1964
The Werribee District Football League, which evolved significantly over the years, changed its name to the Western Suburbs Football League in 1964 when four Werribee teams left to become the Werribee VFA Football Club. In 1998 the WSFL was subsumed into the Footscray District Football League, which now, as one entity, became the WRFL (now WFNL).

I started this when looking at the origin of the Laverton Football Club, thank you again Doggie Boy, but my research just took off. I’ll finish after a few more sentences: -

During the early to mid-1960s, whilst playing with Willi CYMS in the U18s Werribee DFL, I can remember playing teams such as Central Altona, West Newport, Yarraville YMCA, Newport as well as several listed above. My memory is limited as I’m now very old, therefore I’m happy to be corrected and my memory enhanced.

My research may not be 100% as football sites such as Wiki are filled only by club stalwarts, therefore there are many holes. Many clubs have had no history recorded which is a shame. I haven't been able to find anything on the Laverton guernseys, but someone will know?? Then I'll record it on Wikki.

As a request, should what I have written be NQR, please correct me, and I’ll contact the source and have them update.

Great insight, its sad all those clubs dont have their history online somewhere for us to read.

Also, the WSFL clubs went to the FDL in 1988 not 1998.....fat fingers ?? lol

Fantastic effort SS!

Can only imagine what the Laverton area was like in 1924, think the township was mostly south of the current freeway. Sorry about the 2 hours lost, perhaps I should have researched it myself!
