List Mgmt. Trade: Geelong receives Mitch Clark from Melbourne and sends Travis Varcoe to Collingwood

Uncontested possessions against the best team in the country- he was almost responsible for that chain.
If he got possessions, and many of them, he got criticised for uncontested.
As I say, he's gone now, but in the eyes of too many, his best was never enough.

fair enough. For the record, I'm no Varcoe hater but I was not fussed at all when he was rumored to be traded. Christensen is the one that still hurts something shocking and always will.
Varcoe was good but never as good as what he could have been due to foot injuries.

And shoulders. The impact of not being able to do upperbody workouts and tackling is huge.
Judd said he lost a season through shoulder injuries as far as fitness and impact.
Will be interesting to see Ablett's return.

Because of my recent shoulder injuries I have had to have both shoulders strapped to play cricket.

Believe me when I say I have a new found sympathy for Travis, severely limits mobility.

Like for your comment, not that you have the injuries.
And Varcoe too had multiple shoulder reconstructions.

why bring him into the midfield or play as a defender when the shoulders get worked on the most in those areas of the ground?
As a forward pocket specialist, as long as you harass and keep on chasing after your out of the contest, the usual injuries sustained are ACL's and broken arms, something Varcoe doesn't appear to have a predisposition toward. Guys like Matera, Betts, Elliott, Thomas stay in the one position they appear suited in. Varcoe may have kicked 40-50 goals the past two years if he played the one position he looked good at from the beginning because there is no doubting his goal awareness. You don't lose that.

He is pretty creative and great at setting up the quick chain reaction
Past 2years though we didn't seem to be able to capitalise, and he was admittedly below par.
CS must have hoped that he would eventually get back to late 2011 form. Like early 2013-dynamic.
C'est la vie. We look forward now to Clark.
I will watch and wish Varcoe every success though this season.

And he posted a ripping AF total of 35,....placing him 20th in the team, that's pretty good to, hey!....the 14 disposals, 12th....very high numbers for Trav!....AFL.com data sheet.
We need midfield types that win their own footy and more of it.

I'm hoping Mitch Clarke is up to that, otherwise I can see plenty of critics lining up, but then, a totally different beast (200cms) apples v oranges.

With Varcoe and Frawley both have a night to forget, if Clark can have a good preseason and show glimpses of what he's going to bring this year, our trade results are going to start looking better and better...

I thought that was the bible for knowing who the good players are - that and supercoach scores are always accurate as to how well someone played

Supercoach at least can be a fair representation. DT or AFL Fantasy is based on simple stats like disposals, marks and tackles. You get 3 points for a kick no matter if it goes to your team, the opposing team or out of bounds.

Well for what it's worth children, he was 20th according to their effectiveness score card. I doubt he'll even get a game regularly at Collingwood when the big guns return, highly unlikely.

Have you all now become Magpie supporters because the Varcs is there! :D

I think that's one of the key issues with Trav Vdubs and NSFB
I got the feeling he was always wary of re-injuring the shoulder , he never really tackled with ferocity and did everything to avoid bumping - not that he lacked courage - more out of self preservation.

I can't get the vision of him having his shoulders strapped out of my head, F2G- did you see that video that was on the GFC website last year?? I think it takes them 11 minutes or something, from memory, to strap him to ensure that he doesn't fall apart when he bumps anyone during the game.

Edit.

Here's the footage:

Anyone who goes through that, just to play footy, is a hero in my book.

No but god damn I wish you would.

It's sure made me aware of how I move and dive around, definitely have gone into preservation mode.

First game back playing I had gained massive respect for Travis, I could barely lift my arms above shoulder height.

How he's managed to play over 100 games league football astounds me.

Anyone here knowledgeable enough about shoulder strapping or who has played with shoulder strapping care to comment about what it does and how it feels?

Well any strapping is restrictive. Had ankles, hands, knee done, it's very restrictive. However, they'd have strapped him at full stretch, as this would be the breaking point.

I would also think that shoulders, if as bad as TV supposedly had, are susceptible to further injury in tackles.

If anyone watches NRL, Benji Marshall is another good example of poor tackling mainly due to long term shoulder weakness and instability. Marshall is well known for being a turnstile.
