Didn't see the game (was at work from 7 and didn't get home until 7:30). Don't seem to have missed much other than Daniher's 4 goals. Zach seems to have played well too.

Played well in the first and last quarters. Crows completely destroyed us in that middle period.

Only saw the first quarter and part of the second but they look tired or just waiting for it to end. I mentioned in the preview thread that most are
simply waiting for this year to end. We have not really started our new journey. That comes next year when the blokes who want to return are back and the coach gets a crack at things with a full list and a full pre season. IMO we are still short of top 4 so it will be interesting to see what we come up with and how the blokes come back after a year off.

Disappointed with our inability to tackle properly. They broke free way too often.
Guess we can put it down to not having our better midfielders out there.

Still short of top four? What areas do you think we are deficient in? I'm struggling to see the gaps now. I thought we needed to find about 5 new good players this year and so far we have Hartley, Parish, Fantasia, Walla, Luey and Ambrose.
Importantly we have found players that fill the gaps that we had. The ruck looks good. Small forwards sorted. Defense improved particularly in regards to depth. Speed sorted. Depth seems likely to be very good.
Do you have any concerns about any best 22 players not being up to the standard? In my best 22 I've got reservations about Stanton, Parish and Laverde. These guys may not be top four standard (or not yet). But if these guys are the only ones we have to worry about then that is a pretty glowing endorsement i would have thought?
My major concern is the team gelling together. It may take them half a season to find their feet.

The way i see it is we have a lot of question marks on blokes who have the potential to fill a position but have not done so yet. We have question marks on the forward line(KP) and need another really classy mid or two. A few blokes may step up but until it is proven they do i can not see us being anything more than what we did in 2014.

This is my concern and why 2017 isn't going to hold high expectations
By seasons end i'd like to see the team balanced and playing out games
Maybe we can do a richmond-style last season run and win our last 8 or 9.

Win an Elimination Final and lose the Semi Final would be very nice progress from the last couple of years.

On the midfield issue, Watson, Heppell and Merrett are surely beyond reproach? The assistance they get from Myers and Hocking on the inside is also first class imo. That leaves Colyer and Zaka for pace on the outside with general backup support from Goddard and Stanton around the ground. Parish is coming on as able depth plus Fantasia and Walla as footnotes. I see that as job done. We are mucking around with Langford and Laverde this year which is all to the good, but with a full strength side i think we have a finished product?

Pretty much the same midfield as 2014. Too slow and Zaka is not outside pace. He is not quick and does not run and carry a lot. He is a run past and receive.
The job i not done. Parish can not be depth, he has to be in the side and we need to draft another classy mid this year.

At this stage i am just hoping we win enough games to make the 8. Lots of questions to be answered.

Yeah if Goddard could stop dropping his head if he's gonna go back with the flight in defense that'd be great

That's why he's better suited to a wing next year. If Hibberd leaves we could look to sign kelly or even Bartel as it sounds like Chris Scott doesn't have him in their plans for 2017.

Just spilling the ball so betts et al can kick goals did my head in

Yeah I agree his days as a defender are behind him as he is below average in overhead marking contests as a defender these days. Even up forward he has struggled - getting out in open space on a wing is his go now.

Sorry i meant Parish is midfield depth as he plays out of forward pocket or wherever. I think he is already good enough to contribute even in a really good side.
Basically the way i see it, Merrett is an upgrade on himself in comparison to 2014. He has gone from a useful fringe player to an elite player. I don't think the difference that will make should be underestimated.
Even this year, Parish is a solid upgrade on Howlett (who was just too inconsistent). By next year you would expect more again from him.

Go back to 2014 and you see players like Ashby, Dellolio, Gleeson, Hardingham, Melksham, Jackson and Howlett getting regular games. These guys were either just kids, and/or not up to scratch. Early in 2014 we literally had no speed in the side other than Dempsey. Next year we have Colyer, Walla and Fantasia. Also, next year our depth will be of far greater caliber in both experience and/or talent.
