Who Is The Best Player You've Seen?

nah 1000+ goals and 3 coleman medals in only four full seasons at full forward. How many colemans for Dunstall in all his seasons at full forward? Matthews gets greatest tag due to his coaching premierships and media work. As a player couldnt do the things Ablett could do. Not even close!
Back in the late 70s none other than Barass, who disliked Hawthorn intensely at the time, ranked Matthews the best player of that decade, long before he coached. So that puts paid to you coaching deeds theory.

It is pretty sad only 2 defenders have been mentioned.

Doesn't anyone remember Bruce Doull? Week in week out.
I did mention Doull but when push comes to shove Ablett, Jezza and Blight had more talent to hurt you on the scoreboard. Doull best defender the game has ever seen though.

A goal saved.
Turning defense into attack.
Not sexy, but surely as valuable.
Some like candy, others veges.

In your opinion. Must have been a Hawks player best ever, right? BUDDY!!!

Have already acknowledged Carey as the best I've seen going back to the late 70s/early 80s and discounting guys like Leigh Matthews as his career was ending more or less in my early child hood years when I didn't have as much an appreciation of the game.

Ablett hadnt stepped out yet in the late 70's. Ohh dear!

To put an end to this. We could name 20-30 players as the best ever. We all have our preferences and biases. Comparing players from generation to generation is probably unfair. We are also dealing with passionate supporters that argue their case strongly. It's a great game and we are privileged to witness the great players of our game. Lets hope the Paddy Dangerfields and Dustin Martin's of the game can reach the heights of the greats of the game.

Are you following? Or muppeting?
Mine in response to a flog who said mathews became a great player because of his coaching record later on.

Your a moron.

Try entering an ongoing debate on BF rather than making conclusions out of context.

You're.

Matty Scarlett would be right up there too. Best defender I've seen by a country mile. Can't think of too many other defenders who would poll Brownlow votes in games where his team gets destroyed by 13 goals, like he did against Port Adelaide in 2003.

People say he never played on an opponent, but for the first 10 years of his career he had a habit of making key forwards look like suburban league hacks despite giving away height and weight to some of his opponents just by superior reading of the play and better body positioning. It was only later in his career when Harry Taylor and Tom Lonergan took up the two key defensive posts that he changed to the third tall defender/ loose man in defence role.

Muppet head - Matthews name in the spotlight helps his case doesnt it. Especially when those rated him greatest ever have worked with him in the media muppet head! Over and out!

Thats clever, cleverdick.
So matthews in the media helped his case to be regarded as one of the great players ever even though people like Barassi (do you know who that gentleman was? Do you know who your own father is?) and others rated him high at the time of his playing career before he had a media job or coached? I think you need to go and burst some of those pimples on your arse.

GAS was not the best of all time, or even his own generation.

Wasn't even the best forward of his generation. The most mercurial and entertaining certainly, but not the best.

most dynamic and turned a football match like no other player in the history of the sport.
By the time he was in final year of the game, commentators and many past players were talking him up as one of the greatest players they have seen.

Dunstall and Lockett were champions but they needed their teammates to keep feeding them the ball in order to dominate. Not the case with Ablett.
