So why not switch Rioli forward for Menadue,then drop Menadue for Cotchin, and not bring in Butler?

Because you're making an excuse for Rioli, that's why. In your scenario Rioli as a midfielder for Cotchin as a midfielder is an obvious no brainer. But, in reality, Rioli had the majority of his possessions in the forward line, whereas the majority of Menadues possessions was in a high half forward position at best.

Stop making excuses.

Because you're making an excuse for Rioli, that's why. In your scenario Rioli as a midfielder for Cotchin as a midfielder is an obvious no brainer. Rioli and the club are trying to convert him into a mid (or at least, more of a mid). It's not really working and has caused his form to drop off, so he's being dropped accordingly....for a Mid.

It'll be interesting what they do with him in the 2s...Continue trying to convert him, or 'reset' him back to being a fwd.
