This deserves 1 week BUT as it was a pre-season game, he will cop a $1500 fine...if this was in the regular season, he would cop 1 week...that’s the way the AFL work...they also won’t want one of Carlton’s “star” new recruits missing the season opener...

the cynic in me , thinks this is the way the AFL works
if he did that in round 2, its a week
or a lesser club not in opening game a week

impacting marquee thursday night opener, nothing to see here

If Long got 3 this is certainly worth 1 at the very least

I wouldn’t even be surprised if there’s some delayed concussion..Hunter looked pretty stumbly when he got to his feet.
Darcy went straight off. Hunter played out the game.

Could see this as a fine as Clark got back up pretty much straight away. But it was high so depends if MRO want low or medium impact. So also one week is in the conversation.

The coversation at AFL House will be:
Gil: So, without him, will Richmond make the game embarrassing and neutrals will switch off early?

Hocking: Hurr durr

Gil: Okay, make it a fine. But word it sternly and remind everyone the head is sacrosanct. Always.

Hocking: Hurr durr

Later that day:
MRO: Having examined the footage and reviewed the medical report a fine of $1,500 has been applied. The AFL wants to remind everyone that the head is to be protected at all times and the player laying the bump has to take responsibility for their actions.

Ch 7: A fine not a week? Thank * for that !!

Caro: Blah blah blah Eddie McGuire.

1 week. Lucky Clark bounced up quickly but it’s still an unacceptable bump after the player has disposed of the ball

Every time a player gets rubbed out for a flimsy touch the game becomes more sanitised and unwatchable.

If there is such a big concern about players being hit in the head, make them all wear helmets, if not, stop turning the game into a fluff-fest.

Or.

How about players don't bump late?

After Tuck and Frawley both having CTE identified, the AFL should be absolutely red hot on high contact.

Agreed. They can also learn to how to execute a bump without collecting someone in the head. It's not that hard.

Well, incidental head clashes will always happen. But its pretty easy for players to not jump when bumping. In fact, then can even learn to always crouch when bumping to ensure they dont hit high.

And also learn not to bump if a player has his head over the ball. That is what tackling is for.

There were plenty of angles, clear elbow to the head. He's in trouble, weeks expected. Ben Long got 3 weeks.
That seems a reasonable precedent. Ziebell got 4 weeks for leaving the ground and making contact with the head too.
Williams looks in trouble which is a shame as he's a gun and would have been playing in a huge round 1 opener.

If he'd dived for a smother instead he might have actually impacted the play, not collected a player high and late, and not be looking at a fine or suspension.

What chooklotto's interpretation is this year (OK, week) is anyone's guess, but previous years, if he did indeed make high contact, you'd expect weeks.

Basically this, are they wanting to make a statement before the season, then he gets a week (wont get plural as player wasnt injured) or they going to go soft early and just a fine?

Gooooooooooooooorrrrrrnnnnnn....There were plenty of angles, clear elbow to the head. He's in trouble, weeks expected. Ben Long got 3 weeks... let's see what this gets. Ball was gone, chose to bump, left the ground, hit the head, head rocked back, player stumbled... terrible look for the AFL.
This 2nd clip is a shocker....

Those views are pretty incriminating, wouldn't surprise to see him miss a week.
Intentional/Careless
High contact
Low impact

What's that get him?

What might help is that the impact was low and nothing will come out of the injury report.

Brilliant post LL.

The very fabric of our game is slowly being changed before our very eyes.

This is a tough game played by hard men and we're all too keen to call out bumps like this which are part and parcel of the theatre of the event.

While the eradication of the king-hits and blatant head high hits have been positive, removing the bump (which is what we are slowly doing) changes it too much the other way. Keep it a hard game please.

Chuck them all in helmets.
