I suspect old horses o courses is full of shit

Unless it pisses down for the next 2 weeks there is no legitimate logical case to be made for 2 X rucks vs North

What SHOULD happen

Out : Darcy Fyfe Draper
In : Pearce Dudley Sub : Banners

What WILL happen

Out : Draper
In : Pearce
Xerri is a beast and he beat up Jackson a bit last time they met. They will consider Darcy for that "course" reason alone.

Interesting stat from Champion Data - Freo’s scoring when only Jackson, only Darcy and both are on field

Suggests the two rucks work better when one is on the bench… Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the two ruck combo.View attachment 2333162
Is there any consideration put into the effect of Jackson not getting worn out by having to ruck against Witts for 50% of the game? Could this be why the points diff is so great for him? No? I didn't think so.

I mean when the stat does that blatantly confirm my view, it's worth using. I'm also not having a personal crack at Darcy, him on his own is also in the green, it's the use of both together which is having the negative impact, and the score differential is a reasonably unbiased and quantitative comparison.
sample size?

Going to be some challenges to selection integrity in the coming weeks if all of Fyfe, Darcy, Pearce, NOD, JOM, Dudley, Walters are fit and available. Some of those guys are in our best team but not all of them.

I wonder how much we'll be willing to compromise team balance and performance to fit old favourites in.

Pearce is the only one that should be automatic.

JL seems to love JOM. I don't agree with it but reckon he'll come straight back in when fit. Erasmus is fantastic defensively. He laid 7 tackles on the weekend. I reckon that should be factored in.
Whether he "loves JOM" is neither here nor there.
Weird thing...
Fans on here that are thinking Jl is driven by anything other than their desire to put a winning team on the pitch?
The selectors are professional punters, but they are professionals.
Its not Auskick coached by someones dad.

The other thing, of course, for the Darcy haters to factor in is that with Voss relieved of ruck relief duties he kicks three and generally thrives.

Norths backline aren't worldbeaters. Give Amiss, Trace and Vossy every opportunity to dominate and then, just for shits and giggles, rotate Shai Bolton and Luke Jackson through midfield and forward. Imagine struggling to cover Amiss, Voss and Treacy and then looking up and seeing Luke Jackson coming down to say g'day. Just after you've weathered 5 minutes of Shai Bolton scaring the shit out of you.

All contingent on winning it out of the middle, of course. Be handy to have a club champion ruckman in there to help that happen...

I think when the team produces what it has in the last 3 weeks you have to reward them to maintain integrity.
There isn’t one player out there who didn’t put their body on the line when it was their turn to go. Including Sharp & Draper.
I can understand people being critical of the numbers Sharp is putting up but if what he’s doing is critical to structural integrity then keep him in.
I really don’t see what Drapes did wrong. He played his part in a well drilled back 6.
Having said that obviously Pearce takes his spot.
Anyone else, barring injury make them earn it.
You have to reward players who do what they did on Saturday.
Erasmus particularly as he’s really had to earn it.
Completely agree about rewarding good winning play and players.

I hope they are working hard on signing up Erasmus before they drop him or they give Johnno a spell instead if they want to bring someone else in. These two will be great depth while still developing and we are going to lose more in the next few years so important that we don't need to start again.

I have no doubt that personal relationships/loyalty and trying not to upset people, especially snr players, is a factor.

I think there would be rationalisation that they use to justify it, and high would be that it is the right move for the team, but they are human and therefore fallible.

And….JOM didn’t ask to come to us did he? In any case he was recruited as depth and has done the best he can, especially as he arrived with a long-standing injury. It’s just a pity we got him so late in the day.
You don’t give a guy a 4-year deal if he’s only depth.

Who are you dropping to bring in JOM and Walters

Ryan Pearce Walker
Clark Cox Chapman
Noddy Young Wagner
Bolton Treacy Reid
Dudley Amiss Voss

Jackson Brayshaw Serong

Johnson, Erasmus, Simpson, Freddy.

Sub: Fyfe.

Depth: Darcy, Walters, JOM, Sharp, Sturt, Worner, Walters

Assuming everyone is fit and in form I'm taking Walters and O'Meara into a final over Dudley and Erasmus. It's not even close IMO.

Same applies with Simpson at this stage, I'd prefer Banfield in September 2025.

Our final 4 games last season are proof that mature heads prevail in big games. Pick the team most likely to win, we're not rebuilding. McDonald should have come in over Draper last week.

O’Meara played all 4 of those losses.
Banfield in 3 and was dropped for the Power game after his woeful performance against GWS.
Walters maybe if he’s fully fit and match hardened.

I think you might want to look back at the performances of O'Meara, Banfield and Walters in the last 4 games of last season.

They were at best passengers if not detrimental to some of those games.

I'll take Raz's size, tackling, run-with ability and overall superior defensive capabilities over Jaeger's beach bod readiness. He's also a better fit alongside the other mids. JOM just doesn't vibe with Serong/Brayshaw and co.

Walters is better than Dudley though and I love me some Wombat.

Hmm, I think they are a bit even atm. Walters just has all his games experience left to nudge ahead... maybe... I think they might interchange them week to week for the second half.

He’s made so many poor selection decisions that we expect mistakes that will cost us games.

O'Meara was the 6th highest ranked player in the side prior to injury (and still is for the season)View attachment 2333659
For those who cry "But the eye test" he was ranked much lower for us last season (13th).

Fyfe I think is done, but I think that problem will get solved by him inevitably getting injured again.
JOM's CD numbers are pretty much proportional to time spent at centre bounce. Which isn't that surprising - pure player rating always favours inside mids. He put up decent numbers in 2023 also. The question is whether him being there helps the midfield group in general.

I think he's 1 of our 22 best players, but he's always felt an awkward fit in a midfield with Serong and Brayshaw. Our team midfield numbers are generally worse when he's there. I hope we make him earn it in general, but more importantly I hope when he's back in the team it's not as an inside mid.
