Rd 24. Adelaide (time unknown) @ Patersons

That's a pretty good draw really. The byes are fairly well spaced, and the first game back after each bye is early and is at Patersons, which will give us more time to recover and prepare for the following week's game away at Etihad. And we only play 2 of the top 8 teams from last year twice (Dockers and Dogs). More games at the MCG instead of Etihad would have been nice, but we are the wooden spooners after all.

Rd 24. Adelaide (time unknown) @ Patersons

That would give WCE an 11-11 record, so we coud possibly make the 8 based on percentage. We would also end up with a 9-3 record at Patersons. It would be a big win if we can get teams worried about coming over to Perth again. Maybe they would call it Paterson's Curse...:p...ahaha...get it?...oh never mind.

It's actually a pretty good draw. We could win more or less than i mentioned depending on how our squad improves or injuries. It's not hard to go from 4 wins to 9-10 in one season. So this is an oppositionist prediction with a few twists.

9 WINS - 13 LOSSES

Would 8 wins + be a pass?

I think 8 wins is acceptable if we are doing the right thing and blooding youngsters throughout the season. I'd rather we win 8 games with Wilson holding down FF and Stevens a starting midfield spot, than 10/11 games with Lynch at FF and Adam Selwood in the midfield.

The nature of the wins/defeats will play some part too.

I'm steering clear of that loaded question. What is the minimum number of games you think GC will win this year?

Personally - 5-6 wins would be expected from the football public, but there isnt any real expectation this season within the club I feel, simply need to develop fan base, develop players and get routines, training and structures right, the rest will follow.

I dont think the football world expects much from West Coast this season, but I think there is an incredible amount of talent in the squad where I beleive West Coast will win 8 games, any more would be a bonus I beleive.

The competition is evening so much though, look how quickly Freo came through from the season before, very much expect WC will do the same.

If GC only win 2 games do you expect Bluey will be replaced as coach, or has he been guaranteed a couple of years?

He would have to be guarenteed first two, didnt Ron Alexander get two? Im not sure, Im sure Blewy can coach and if he cant do something with that squad then perhaps he cant.

On that basis, looking forward to the 92+94 premiership highlights of the half back flankers building up to the first time our two teams meet.

Would 8 wins + be a pass?

I don't reckon you just assess it by wins.

If we had a season like Melbourne's last year - 8 wins and a great percentage - then yeah, i reckon that would be close to a pass.

If we had a season like Port's - 10 wins and a s**t percentage with a few consolation wins when the season was over - then no I don't reckon that would be.

Wins aren't the sole panacea - unless they get you to finals of course.

Ron only coached '87 - Todd coached 88 and 89 - Malthouse came in 1990

Woosha made McKenna looked good ;)

No doubt we'll have Glen Jakovich making some comment that is barely in English.

Yep, it's a shame GC and WC only play the once this year, considering the potential coaching rivalry. I reckon the GC vs Brisbane rivalry will be pretty strong in a couple of years time. It's a shame Tasmania missed out on getting a team, but I understand the AFL wanting to build up competition within the major cities.

My prediction - 6-8 wins for the year. It won't be enough to save Worsfold. I reckon he needs to get into the 8 or maybe one game out of the 8 to save himself. And even then he would only get a one year extension. I could be wrong though. Nisbett might lobby his cronies on the board to ensure jobs for the boys continues. He has done it before.

For me the first 6 games are critical for a few reasons.
1. The draw. We have several winnable games in that first 6. Games against inconsistent middle of the road sides at Subi such as North, Sydney, Melbourne etc. Look at the next batch of 6-7 games after that. Much, much harder. Collingwood, bulldogs, freo etc. We won't come out of that section of our draw with many wins. We have to take advantage of those early winnable games.

2. In addition to the draw getting harder as the season goes on i also believe our physical intensity will fade badly in the second half of the season as most clubs with young lists do as young bodies get worn down by the lack of conditioning for AFL footy.

3. The Worsfold contract saga will heat up into the second half of the year and start distracting focus. Every press conference or media article will focus on it. Especially if we are not doing well.

4. Mental toughness - In short we don't have any at the moment. It takes mental toughness to come from behind and recover from setbacks. A team with genuine self belief, solid game plans, discipline and structure, a strong leadership group could possibly recover from a bad start to the season and not let the bottom fall out. We are not one of those teams. We are very fragile mentally and i don't think it would take too many losses to get those negative thought patterns so evident last year going through the minds of the playing group again. That behavioural and mental pathway of playing selfish footy, not caring, not making second efforts, not chasing etc is a well established habit/pathway in our playing group after several shocking seasons. It wouldn't take much to knock us off plane and put us back into this mode of operating again.

So for all those reasons i believe the first 6 games are critical. Worsfold needs to get wins on the board to get the playing groups confidence in themsleves up and provide a buffer against likely strings of losses and some utter floggings in that second tranche of games against the better sides. He needs a minimum of 3 wins from those first 6 games and probably more like 4 to have any chance of holding things together and getting us out of the bottom 4. If we limp out of those first 6 games at 2-4 or 1-5 etc then look out. Bottom 4 would be a monty, the spoon a possibility, Worsfold as good as gone and the bottom could really fall out again as it did last year after a few early losses.

Really I only see eight games that we have no chance against but every other game right now is a possibility.

14 wins for the year at best, but it won't happen so I say about 4-5 of them we will lose and be expecting 8-9 win's this season.

Are you being facetious, FS?

Not at all - i think it's bang on

In fact aside from the inevitable dig at Nisbett most of your post was on the money

We have a very good draw for a team hoping to climb the ladder - and a lot of those benefits come within the first 7 weeks.

In addition the teams that seem to have injury problems and players returning to play later in the season like Melbourne, North and Freo we get early - so it's another benefit.

We should be at a bare minimum 3-3 after 6 weeks if we want to improve our position from last year - because if we can't beat that opposition - we've got no chance against the rest.

Don't worry Geoffe - i'll tell you when i think you're being irrational :)

11 wins, 11 losses

There's quite a few 50/50s that could easily go either way. Derbies are always 50/50 but given our recent trend, I've put them as losses. Those 50/50s could go either way, and could either see us make the finals or not.
