Analysis 2018 Best 22

Maybe not but I'd love to see him being trailed as a defensive forward. Campaigner would pressure all day long

Nelson has spent some time at various stages in our beloved rookie HFF position but didn't show a lot. Parto has probably been our best there TBH, the kid seems to like a sausage roll. Forward pressure is mandatory but you have to be a good shot on goal and be able to create offensively.

Nelson looks best equipped so far for running half back and the wing and trying to dig the footy out in tight - where his mongrel can be fully exposed. Not sure he has demonstrated much ability to be the first receiver around a stoppage where you need to weigh up your disposal options very quickly.

Could we morph Partington into a sausage roll snagging, hard running link up half forward. Or should we give him some time on ball

FB: Sheppard MacKenzie Hurn
HB: Yeo McGovern Barass
C: Gaff Redden Masten
HF: Jetta Darling LeCras
FF: Cripps Kennedy Rioli
R: Naitanui Shuey Sheed

Bench: Vardy Hutchings Nelson Venables

Bold - Under 100 games

Red - Can be total liabilities or go missing for entire games (not including <100 gamers)

So half the team are either lacking experience or have significant experience but can be completely shut out of games..

Redden and Sheed have got to be ready for massive seasons if we are going to get anywhere next year.

Would have had Cripps in red also as last year he was MIA on many occasions. Has been worthwhile in previous years though so perhaps he was playing with a niggle or two all season?

Being able to morph midfielders into forward flankers instead of back flankers would be a promising sign of the oft preached versatility starting to be shown by the development team.

Toby Greene

The best juniors play midfield. IMO you should draft midfielders and turn them into other positions because they have the talent. Toby a great example. First year he was a kick hacking mass ball winner in the midfield. Giants had classier players but found a spot for him and now he's All Australian Half forward.

Ranked by wbc and ibc for his weight division too!

Trade period over, it's highly unlikely our new draftees will cut best 22... Round 1 - 2018 team...

B: Hurn McKenzie Sheppard
HB: Yeo McGovern Duggan
C: Jetta Redden Gaff
HF: Cripps Darling Partington
F: Rioli Kennedy LeCras
R: NicNat Shuey Sheed

Bench: AhChee Venables Vardy Hutchings

Leave Yeo and Duggan at halfback, don't mess with a good thing.

AhChee, Venables, Hutchings, Partington, Jetta, Sheed can all rotate through midfield and forward line.

Who do you think would come out of my team? Hutchings? Partington? AhChee?
I don't think Partington is Best 22. Ideally, Hutchings won't be either.

With Venables-Rioli-Cripps in your side Le Cras could also drop out.

No Barrass??

Barrass v Mackenzie is now a delicious little selection problem. However Simmo will likely try play them both

Shepherd - McKenzie - Barrass
Hurn - McGovern- Cole
Gaff - Yeo - Wellingham
Sheed - Vardy - Darling
Rioli - Kennedy - Lecras

Natanui - Ah Chee - Shuey

I/c Duggan - Redden - Venables - Nelson

Shepherd - McKenzie - Barrass
Hurn - McGovern- Cole
Gaff - Yeo - Wellingham
Sheed - Vardy - Darling
Rioli - Kennedy - Lecras

Natanui - Ah Chee - Shuey

I/c Duggan - Redden - Venables - Nelson
haha Wellingham likely won't even be on our list

Shepherd - McKenzie - Barrass
Hurn - McGovern - Yeo
Gaff - Shuey - Jetta
Cripps - Darling - Ah Chee
LeCras - Kennedy - ?????

Natanui - Sheed - Redden

Duggan - Lycett - ????? - ?????

Then Vardy, Hutchings, Nelson, Wellingham (if he survives the cut), Partington, Schofield.

Then the untested/yet to debut - Rioli, Venables, Cole etc

I've left 2 spots on the bench - I just can't pick those yet. I don't think Hutchings should play if Sheed and Redden both play in the middle. Partington did ok but hasn't cemented himself. I like Nelson, off a wing or half back.

I think there is an obvious battle for 2nd Ruck/3rd Tall Forward with Vardy and Lycett - Vardy the better forward and Lycett the better ruck. Will be interesting. Only one of them plays.

Left the forward pocket spot open - I think if Rioli has a full pre-season they may be tempted to drop him straight in. LeCras I think will start the season but will be on notice.

Interesting season ahead!

FB: Brad Sheppard ~ Tom Barrass ~ Shannon Hurn

HB: Elliot Yeo ~ Jeremy McGovern ~ Liam Duggan

C: Andrew Gaff ~ Dom Sheed ~ Lewis Jetta

HF: Daniel Venables ~ Jack Darling ~ Brendon Ah Chee

FF: Willie Rioli ~ Josh Kennedy ~ Jamie Cripps

R: Nic Naitanui ~ Luke Shuey ~ Jack Redden

I: Scott Lycett/Nathan Vardy , Jackson Nelson, Tom Cole, Luke Partington

Rightly or wrongly all the players in bold are locks and the rest are pretty interchangeable, especially the bench which i didn't really put much thought into tbh.
Suspect with all our draft picks this year that a couple will be in the team round 1, especially if we pick up some mature age players.

Hopefully we're done with guys like Masten,Lecras,Hill,Mackenzie etc lining up in round 1, but i have my doubts.
