I think Beatson ended up saying that it was turning into a very even draft from late first round onwards. I know that wasn’t his original assessment but that seems to have changed later in the season

What gives me confidence is that all four picks in the draft were prospects we obviously had as first priorities. We traded up to get Gould and Warner, we were willing to take the risk on Taylor, and we used our highest pick in a decade on Stephens. So in terms of assessing players and then doing what was needed to get the ones we wanted, we drafted with pretty impressive efficiency and confidence.

He probably can and will play a lot next year but no draftee should be expected to play the following season after they are drafted. It's a huge jump from junior footy to AFL level. Gould has played a bit in the SANFL which is great but all drafted kids are long term prospects in the end.
I'll be hoping Stephens and Gould play a handful of games at the very least given they played in the SANFL, which is much stronger than NEAFL, and did very well. I can see competition for best 22 spots being highly competitive next year.

They didn’t muck around once they got to our selections that’s for certain

Brady Rowles. Under 12 possessions a game?
Academy must have very little faith in their process if Thorn, Parkes or Ellem don't deserve a crack, and a 72kg Vic kid does.
We are in love with skinny fast kids it seems. Maybe we just like ruining their lives. :D

Not sure why we wouldn't pick up Mitch Hibberd instead of another u15s player like Ling or the kid in the midseason last year.

Given the way we set up behind the play under Horse, and of course given the midfield has not covered itself in glory lately leaving a lot of work to do down back, 3 intercept players that use it well will be a boon.
Provided they can also stop their opponents getting the ball.

Is it that much stronger these days though? Wasn't Grassy looking great in the SANFL and now according to posters he looks a dud in the NEAFL.
With GWS, GC, Brissy and Swans reserves the NEAFL must be close to passing the SANFL if it hasn't already. Couple of other pretty good teams too.

Couple of notable trends this year:

- The swans seem to prefer South Australians and West Australians. No Vics in the main draft. Not sure if you can read anything into this, however I do know, being an ex SA person, that young south australians often love coming to sydney, and do not have the same expectations as vics.
- The swans love prince alfred college, saint peters and scotch college boys from Adelaide. 2 of the four came from these schools to complement hayward, hewett etc. As a princes old boy, great to see.
- the swans have steered well away from players with an injury question mark. Unless I have missed something they have selected players with clean injury records. This years list is looking very healthy, with few players with long term injuries. Hopefully we will have a year similar to brisbanes year.

Another good post.

As an ex SA myself , when I return to visit extended family, I am staggered at the amount of footy followers both Port and Crows fans who have Swans as their second team (when they are out of it)
You know the Vic hatred but more seeming respect. You have prolly noticed the same?

The better educated/ academically qual , then arguably the better post footy career options available in Sydney?

Cannot believe Chirgwin did not get picked. Was significantly more impressive than a large number of prospects who were.
You really have to feel for the players who miss out, especially those who were almost certain to get drafted, like Chirgwin. They've spent the last several years hoping for this moment, working hard and have probably made alterations to studies and careers under this expectation.

Brady Rowles was 9th for 20m sprint 2.968.
2nd in vertical leap 73cm
1st in running vertical leap 98cm (8cm more than 2nd).
Several Swans Academy kids had sub 8sec agility, sub 3 sec 20m and 20.3 plus yoyo.. all seen as elite.
Throw that 72kg body around, especially as a mid playing the Lions NEAFL team, and you are just another skinny kid who can't get the contested ball.
Ie... Hirst... should have just kept him for the pre-season and at least given him a chance.
He would have tested well too. Had pretty good stats playing u18 games all year, and im not sure, but playing the private school footy pads the stats too.
These Swans academy kids are getting into it with NEAFL men and Sydney prems. I know the quality may not be there, but my God, they are physical, or they are nothing.
I said it before. Our boys are disadvantaged by their hard work in the gym so they can cut it against men, because it is seen as them having less development available to them.
Maybe bring back Mick O and Tadgh to the coaching and development table. Crouch as a player was was fantastic. But his game plans aren't aligned with the recruiters wants

Gould will play r1 aftwr he shows a heap in the pre season games
I’m really excited about this one, Punts. Got some mongrel about him to go with the skills

Also I need a new fav now Smooch has retired

Conflicting reports on Taylor's size as some say 185cm and some say 188cm. I hope Beatson is right.

Especially when they’re good enough!
