Least they didn’t blow them like Gold Coast who have stuffed the competition again for the next period.
They have stuffed the competition for the next period... In a sense
Suns p1,2 - they were wooden spooners
GWS p4,5 - they were grand finalists.

I’m so happy GWS have traded up actually
Why.. how is that good for the Swans?
Our very slim chance of getting Green is now gone (only chance was if GWS were more keen on another player.. now they get that player and bid on Green), and we're guaranteed to move down from p5 to p6
Our cross-town rivals after making the Granny leave the draft with two top 5 picks, we get zero top 5 picks even though we finished 15th. So, GWS continue to move ahead of us.

Only one team got gifted extra priority picks this year making the next three drafts compromised.

GWS at least have given up resources to trade up.

We weren’t getting Green anyway. GWS are matching.

We don’t miss out on any players we need desperately and we can take the best mid after the top 2. Also happy Young will be taken by Melbourne or GWS

The best mid after the top 2 is Green.

Also, if we had an interest in Jackson for our pick them that option becomes less likely too.

We definitely aren't in a better position as a result of this trade. We are still in a position to get a very good player, but more players will be off the table by our pick, which means more likelihood that the player at the top of our wish list is gone.

GWS have been gifted truckloads of first round picks, not to mention truck loads of salary cap support to keep them.
Yes they have picked well at the draft, but hard to stuff up 28 1st round selections over 9 years!

Are you a closet Giants supporter? You're very passionate about defending them

We need mids not a Ruck or a defender. Rather take Flanders, Stephens or someone else. We are still in a good position, don’t need to do anything till draft night.

They have drafted pretty well. They got value for players they traded especially to Carlton.

You make a fair point in that a grand finalist can get 2 x top 5 picks but they have paid a heavy price for that privilege. Also, we were never any chance of getting Green. GWS were always going to match whether they held pick 6 or not.

So the draft is pretty much locked in as so?
1. Rowell
2. Anderson
3. Young
4. Jackson
5. Green

So we'll pick Serong?
Melbourne still have pick 3 and the talk is they're interested in Jackson. If so that will make it;
1. Rowell
2. Anderson
3. Jackson
4. Ash/Flanders/Kemp/McAsey? (I would suspect that GWS promised Adelaide not to bid on Young)
5. Green (matching our bid)
6. Serong or Kemp?

No one has said that we aren't still in a good position.

But only you are saying that the GWS-Adelaide trade improved out position. And it didn't.

For the players I want it did and I like to be happy sometimes. This probably takes Young and Jackson off the board. There are more than enough mid options available though which is great news

I think we(and I include myself in this) wish too much for a Josh Kennedy replacement. He was and is a star, but that doesn't mean we need a big body mid to win games. Instead of having one guy getting 30 possessions a game with the rest miles behind (no offense to Parker or Hewitt, I think they both amazing, though too stuck in their positions. Parker should go forward more but is needed in the guts, and Hewitt is needed as a tagger but better running amok by himself), it would be better to have 6 or more guys who can rotate and a get a solid 15-25 every game. This would give us way more flexibility with structure. Add to this that you can throw a big body mid into a midfield like that and it would be way easier than doing it with a few big bodied mids in the same midfield.

Flanders might have modeled his kicking off Martin but he ain’t going to be a dusty Martin, imo. He seems like he’d scuttle back to VIC as soon as he could as well. I’d be disappointed if they picked him. Happy to be wrong but rather look elsewhere...kemp

I would be the happiest man alive if we get Serong, seems like a serious work horse.
Will be the next mosquito fleet with grey, ronk, papley, Taylor, Campbell, gulden, AND Serong.
Would love to watching them every week

I like Serrong but if we draft him it means we are going to have a very small midfield in the future, especially since we are getting Gulden and Campbell next year, Campbell being quite short and Gulden being very short.

If bid for Tom Green comes at 5, GWS will have to make 1502 points but only have 733 in this draft. Because gws have traded out their 2020 first they a) can't trade other future picks and b) can't have a deficit deducted from next year's first, as they don't have one. So... what happens?

Good question. I would kill to get Green. He is EXACTLY what we need.

Completely disagree. There is a top 2, but for mine there is a clear top 8 or so. Trading down to the late teens is lunacy. How about we give Darymple the chance to pick our highest selection in a decade? He' a gun at first round selections especially high ones.

In the open draft I think there would be a top eleven I would be comfortable using our first pick on. (Rowell, Anderson, Young, Jackson, Flanders, Stephens, Ash, Serong, Kemp, Robertson and McAsey) Then the next tier would be players like Weightman, Worrell, Gould, Bergman etc.

So the lowest I would trade our first pick backwards would be pick 10. Because then we are guaranteed a choice of at least two of those players. Eg choosing between Robertson and McAsey.

But I would not expect the club to trade backwards unless they got a really good offer and were not enthused about a specific player.

Serrong, Gulden and Campbell are only three players. An AFL team's midfield rotation has a whole lot more players than just three. We have guys like Dawson (192cm), Hewett (187cm) Heeney, Rowbottom and Clarke (all 186cm) and Florent (185cm) who are going to be playing through the midfield too, so it isn't like everyone is going to be sub-180cm.

Who are going to be our clearance players though? I mean Longmire refuses to play our young mid bodied midfielders as clearance players.

I think it depends what the club is intending to do with our later picks.

We could be planning to get the best specialist inside midfielder available at 25 and 32.

Although in Knightmare's mock draft we seem to be strengthening other areas or picking up talent that slid. Once it is done it will be interesting to see what the club's draft strategy was.

I think they have got North Melbourne's future third. So they may be able to trade that still for unwanted picks in the 40s and 50s. Richmond has got 38, 39 and 41 which are worth over 400 each. Adelaide have picks 45 and 49 which I can't see them using which are worth roughly 300 each.
