But we took Ling before either of those two? Don’t forget we are the slow and boring Swans who lack pace and foot skills, but you’re begrudging us drafting a player with pace and good foot skills?

Is it possible you could be letting your frustration over 18 months of inaction from our first round pick cloud your judgment on what a logical and required pick he actually was?
I think you’ll find certain posters were happy with the Ling selection and posted as such. They made no mention of selecting other players.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Even if Matthew does come good I thought it was painfully obvious we needed inside midfielders in that draft and we instead seemed to avoid midfielders in general at any cost.
If we don't pick up some big bodied mids in the end of year draft, especially since we are producing some good quality academy guys, we must have lost the plot.
Specialist can specialise and everyone knows their jobs and gets the business done. Kennedy is going to be wrecked unless we see a new established big game midfieler and a couple of hard working, big tackling young mids to come in, allow him to jave longevity and be the future.
Crazy trying to make a square peg do the job of a round one!

Think you misread my post, I didn't suggest that everyone was unhappy with the pick, but there were certainly a few on here who questioned it at the time. So nothing to do with hindsight

My recall as is always the case is that there is a lot of conjecture about who we select as first draft choice. So whilst there wasn't opposition as such to Ling there certainly were strong preferences elsewhere by those that made comment. At days end we have Ling and I remain hopeful he will be a raging success. In fact I'm hopeful he debuts this year and cements a spot. Given he was pick 14 and had a terrific preseason 18 before his toe injury, I think there is some chance of that. He's lost ground by no fault of his own, but it's where you finish that's important.

I strongly believe that while we do need half backs with good ball use we need big bodied clearance midfielders a lot more, and I have believed that for a number of years.
I don’t believe they have to be big-bodied (not that I disagree) but give me a Daniel Kerr clone anytime!

We need at least 1 big bodied clearance mid the way the game is going though

I am going to be really pissed off if the Swans don't use our first draft pick in 2019 on a big bodied midfielder, especially since our 2020 pick is likely going to Errol Gulden who, while looking great, is certainly not a big bodied midfielder. He seems more like a Lachie Neale type.

If we are a bottom 4 team like some here think we could make a run for Rowell.

Our 2020 one is tied to an academy kid. Trade it out and use it in Hopper, we don’t lose much. Match the bid with our 2nd and 3rd that year
And if that's the case, then we simply end up with more of the same.
Another small, wing or goal sneak that will struggle because of no protection or grunt.

Hopper is exactly the mid we need. A bullocking tallish inside mid

Happy to trade a first for him (just not this year’s)

We lack a Cripps type badly
What’s the difference between a classy ball getter like Kerr and a talented tower (he’s extremely tall) like Cripps?

I would take Kerr’s gutrunning football class over Cripps any day! I would take Tom Mitchell’s ball getting ability over Cripps any day! I would take Chris Judd’s ball winning talents any day! I would take Adam Goodes’ skill any day! Why do they have to be bullocking?

Bit early to be calling our 2020 first rounder as “tied” to an academy kid. No guarantee at all that’ll be the case.

Do agree on targeting Hopper though, just too many factors yet to be determining what picks we would use as we simply have no idea where we will finish and what our 2019 pick will be at this stage.

I do not see anything too special about hopper.

I do however recall wanting the club to sign a free agent who at the end of this year will be a free agent again...

lets get libba!
