Shifter and Twomey doing a radio mock draft:

Had us taking Cook, Poulter and Mcinness at picks 17, 19 and 22.

Would it be preferable to trade either Cook of Poulter pick for 2x2nd rounders to try and snap up Ford and Callow for example? I don’t see much difference between Cook Poulter Ford Laurie etc. I know they are different types but each have similar potential in their position and at their craft. Get 4x top 30’s instead of 3x! Callow Ford Laurie etc all have capacity to be better than Cook of Poulter. I know it’s just talk but it seems the draft is even between 15 and 30 with all players being pretty good value. Seems Pies really need to trade up if they want 3 with one in that top 15 or down to get 4 of the top 30. Which is better?

Not a bad haul but still doesn’t fix our KPP woes 😢

Unfortunately it doesn't and it's going to be tricky to trade back into the second or third rounds with the goal of securing someone like Callow or Baldwin with the bid match for Reef also needing to be paid for and a tight window to do any draft day trades within.

If we did that, one of those 2nd rounders would just get eaten up matching for Reef wouldn't it?

Yes it would. We'd need to trade in points to match the Reef bid and then trade back into the second round again to grab the other kids we are interested in.

Unfortunately there's no one club who can do all this so we'd have to work on a three way or multi step trade.

Apparently we have to take 6 players in the draft this year unless we stock up on DFA's. Does anyone know if that means we need to take some DFA's before the draft otherwise we will be forced to take 6 players, or can we say take 4 players in the draft then top up after it?

We can fill those 6 spots a few ways. Through the national draft, through DFA's or by promoting rookies to the senior list. I think it'll be a combination of the national draft and rookie promotions to fill out the senior list.

Yeah will be interesting our approach, especially after Reef bid has come. Wouldn't be surprised to see us engineer a trade to get back into that 2nd round.

Not much sense in sliding back 14 and/or 16 at this stage though. Even if we packaged with future first, for an earlier pick in this draft, any "steak knives" would hopefully be for 2021 so we can trade back into this draft post-Reef

Today's episode of On the road to the draft mentioned that we're keen to bid on Blake Coleman from the Lions Academy.

Interesting. 180cm forward.

Like the sound of this in the below write up; hits a real list need!

“The eye-catching forward is near-unbeatable inside forward 50 at full flight, with his clean hands and goal sense setting him apart”

The mid-season rookie draft will remain in similar format to 2019 after the AFL consulted clubs and the AFL Players Association about the feasibility of running three in 2021.

The proposal would have seen one draft per month held after rounds four, eight and 12 next year.

The idea had received cautious support from clubs in a survey the AFL conducts at the end of each season, with more than half the teams wanting the AFL to put the idea on the table and explore it further.
But with the uncertainty surrounding the starting times of state league competitions around the country and the NAB League, which will be an under-19s competition in 2021, starting later than it has in previous years, industry sources said there was a recognition that players would have different levels of exposure depending on the compeition they played in.
There have also been concerns raised among player managers about plucking players out of state league competitions more than once a season on short-term deals, while the WAFL and the SANFL remain wary of the concept because of the potential impact on their competition when players join AFL clubs midway through the year.

The decision means clubs will still have next week's national draft, the pre-season and rookie drafts, the pre-season supplemental selection period and the mid-season rookie draft available as opportunities to add players to their lists between now and the middle of the season.

Collingwood's next generation academy tall midfielder/defender Reef McInnes is being regularly linked by industry sources to one of Essendon's trio of top 10 picks. The Pies would prefer a bid not come for McInnes until after Collingwood's second selection (currently No.16).

Rival clubs are also of the view that the Pies are interested in bidding on Brisbane Lions academy small forward Blake Coleman with one of Collingwood's two first-round selections (currently No.14 and No.16).

Coleman is blessed with pace and could help fill the void left by Jaidyn Stephenson, who was traded last month to North. Coleman is the younger brother of Keidean Coleman, who featured for Brisbane in this year's AFL finals.
