VFL 2023 Sandringham Zebras

Well if it works and we actually get an absolute gun at Sandy, then the overwhelming odds would be that that absolute gun will be drafted by another club.

We would have a better chance of actually get players onto our list who just look likely, if the scheme works. ie Rookies.

Very few VFL players get drafted. I actually like it. It dangles a carrot for them to work their arse off. Even Owen's older brother Kai who had a great year is very unlikely to get a go in the AFL. Clubs seem to have a bias against state league players.

Box Hill's Jake Arundell looks like he's just as likely to make it as a heap of kids in this year's draft. He's probably never going to get that chance. If 2 or 3 players a year get picked up from the VFL you have to be very lucky. Sam Collins, Brodie Mihocek, Micheal Barlow etc waited years and there were plenty that were equally as good.

Milne was great this year.
And is dog s**t In comparison to an AFL quality player.

Thats the key thing we need to remember.

Good VFL doesn’t necessarily mean they are AFL capable.

Your favourite Ethan Philips seems to be going this way too

I wasn't saying I want him in the senior side. Just saying that he is a loss for Sandringham. He's one of the better VFL players in that side. I'm not sure moving out your best players improves you as Brut suggested. Tomo Owens was pretty replaceable IMO. He looked okay rather than good. The Sandy side is similar to the AFL side. There is a lack of top end and if we don't have many Saints players in the side we look terrible.

Phillips would be worth a go for someone still. Doesn't mean he'll get a go. Not many do. I reckon even Crossley is unlucky that he doesn't get put on a fitness program and picked up by someone. Plenty of others in VFL could walk into plenty of AFL lists.

I just dont think anyone would care about losing that type/quality of player if their last names were different.

Milne could be a loss, but if Sandy manages to get some good recruits and he is leaving so he can guarantee playing every week then it's no harm to Sandy.

Huge if in that last sentence. Sandy hasn't managed to get more than 1 or 2 good recruits in any off season for the last 10 years or so. Losing a couple of capable VFL quality players means we'll need to pick up a couple just to break even, and then we have to find another 4+ if we want to be competitive at all.

We also haven't been offering an AFL list spot and extra opportunities to potential VFL recruits in the past.

Our recurring game has changed. Lets see who we bring in.

It will still take investment rather than the offer of a rookie spot. Frankston have stayed competitive because they chase mature players who are good players. We tend to go for cheap kids who just want a run. Hawks and Casey both have solid mature players too.

You have to remember these guys dont get the benefit of being full time players in professional environments, most have jobs outside of the club.
Gringo is right Milne looked AFL standard at times early in the season, but dropped away as the season went on. Sandringham losing him and Tomo Owens to Frankston is not a great sign for them next year. You could argue that both are better than players than we had on our list last season and still have eg Allison. Tomo Owens would have been a better option as Cat B rookie than others we have had listed.

I dont know what Sandringhams salary cap is but they have lost good players year after year.

Phillips has been signed to play with Box Hill Hawks next year who have a history of having players taken by Hawthorn.

With the new alignment improvements announced during the week it really just highlights the massive disconnect between the Saints and Sandy/vfl. We must have been almost treating the relationship with contempt.
You can even see it in the players application.

It does, which is why we are offering Sandy plays the opportunity to train with the AFL during preaseason and the regular season, access to our facilities, extra development sessions as well as offering similar things to prospective coaches at VFL level.

Lets wait to see who Sandy recruit before we complain about average VFL players leaving.

You'd think those guys would've had agreements/contracts with Frankston done before the new Sandy/Saints agreement was made.

Don't think its anything to be concerned about. Will still get some good SFNL and VAFA players trying to give it a shot at making the Sandy squad this summer.

Is that confirmed or a guess?

Confirmed, I believe it was in the same article announcing the rookie selection.
Here's the exert. Maybe it won't work, but it's a good opportunity for someone who wants to get to AFL level so let's see if it can bring some good recruits in. Also mentioned a new recruitment officer appointed and someone hired to help streamline the programs.

Select Sandringham players will also have the option of being involved with St Kilda’s main training sessions both in-season and during pre-season, having full access to club facilities and amenities including the gym, meals and ability to be involved in specialised sessions.

The same will be applicable for Sandringham’s coaching staff, who will be able to learn from Saints development coach/Zebras senior coach Jake Batchelor, Head of Development and Learning Damian Carroll and Development Coach Brendon Goddard to gain valuable experience in an elite environment.

It's basically an AFL reserve side now instead of an AFL affiliate by the sounds of it. This is pretty much what AFL reserve sides do.

They seem to be talking about extending the existing VFL, but where does that leave the stand alone VFL sides?
Maybe a strong second division comp could be set up incorporating select sides from wafl sanfl vfl Qld nt tas Canberra.
Divided into conferences with playoffs for finals. Not necessarily all Melbourne based sides for instance in the same conference.
Those sides not selected to play in smaller local comps with a relegation between second and third tier.
I’m sure the second tier comp would attract viewer interest.
To be honest rugby union needs something like
This as well before it disappears up its own date.

A few in line for the rookie spot:

1. Hipwell-B&F this year
2. Milne-F/S
3. T.Owens-oh out thou brother
4. Mason Hawkins-Ruckman, who impressed in a couple of games earlier in the year, then couldn't get a run, next to Campbell & Heath
