Ignoring the quality of the home teams themselves, is there any easier place in the world for a touring team to play than Australia in the last few years? probably the least distinctive wickets in world cricket right now, especially since the WACA's gone by the wayside

Cricket surely has the worst fans.

India's fans are shocking.

Very good post.

Someone who matches my knowledge on the game of cricket.

I remember when we were dominant and plenty were saying how boring it was winning all the time, be careful what you complain about! Drop in pitches have also changed the way the game is played over here too

The grounds are poor, simple as that. MCG hasn’t been spectacular, nor was Gabba.

Is this Petrovski guy a batsman or bowler?

I went and got sunburn all over my body for that?

Seriously impressive from India though. Gill and Pant were particularly impressive.

Paine's captaincy was really average, and he had nothing when the game was slipping away. That being said, Starc and Lyon were liabilities. Lyon was all series. Will be really disappointed if he's in the starting XI in South Africa.

Mitchell Starc hasn't got a long history of poor performance - he's got as good a strike rate as you'd want from your third ranked seamer. He's not in Cummins or even Hazlewood's league and he's got the kind of poor performances in him that they don't have, but he's a good bowler.

He'd be a good red ball bowler if our bowling depth was poor but for at least the last 7+ years we've prided ourselves on producing great bowlers and potentially having the best attack in the world.

Over the last few years Starc has gotten a game ahead of guys like Pattinson and Jhye and it's clear he's not deserving of walking into the team. We knew this 2 years ago which was part of why he was dropped in the Ashes but due to him picking up wickets against inexperienced Pakistan batsmen he suddenly became a walk up start again.

This isn't new information, we're right back where we were 2 years ago and he needs to go.

Paine has no idea as a captain. No feel for the game at all. Great captains know instinctively who to bowl and where to put fielders. They have plans but they can trust their instincts.

Good captains have well thought out plans to try and get bowlers out but don’t have that instinctive feel for the game.

Paine has neither. His fielding positions are all over the shop. Never where they should be. It took 10 edges through 4th slip before he put a fielder there. Or having Harris where he was on the hook and having the ball keep clearing his head. Starc gets a couple of wickets and he gets his tail up and runs through them.

His bowling changes are also awful. Why would you run Cummins into the ground with 7 overs left then have to finish with hazelwood and Lyon when both are terrible bowling in that situation.

Langer also have to bare some of the blame as the plans the bowlers set out with the captain and coach don’t make sense with the field poorly set for them. Thank heavens we have Cummins or India would have made thousands more runs this series.

Paine’s captaincy at headingley was club level at best and this series he hasn’t been any better.

Well played India, especially considering all their injuries and setbacks but man Australia needs to take a good hard look at itself as. At lot of players need to be shown the door

you cant complain having witnessed that. chasing down 380 in a day on a 5th day brisbane pitch. sure, it sucks australia lost, but as a cricket/sport lover its something special. you wouldnt complain seeing an aussie lose the 100m at the olympics if it was usain bolt who beat him.

whos responsible for the bowling tactics as well? we've lost or drawn countless matches from winnable positions through sheer stupid (mostly short) bowling.

sure mitchell johnson won us back the ashes that one year, but he's ruined australian cricket because now every fast bowler thinks he can intimidate out the opposition batsmen. that series worked because it was a surprise tactic, and johnson was specially good at sharp rising bouncers. but its uesless when thats all we do and theyre at the quality that hazelwood and starc produce.

100%. Was taking the piss. An India win was always my preferred result over a draw.

South Africa are easily favourites. Elgar, Markram, Du Plessis, De Kock, Rabada, Ngidi, etc are solid players.

not sure who our bowling coach is but langer and Paine surely are the drivers behind the short ball barrage. The difference between a 140km/h bouncer and 150km/h is huge.

Though we can’t get the bowl to seam or swing either. So our bowling looks doubly ineffective

its not just about the speed though, its about how sharp they bounce. both starc and hazelwood have to pitch the ball quite short to bounce because of their height/action, so the batsmen can see them coming a mile off. johnson was able to get the ball to rear up from a much fuller length which surprises the batsmen more. they think theyre playing a ball from their waist/chest and all of a sudden its coming at their head.

hazelwood should be modelling his game on mcgrath. be relentless at the off stump with occasional variation. he bowls like he thinks hes as fast as lee and swings it like steyn.

starc should just hope that pattinson never gets fit for long enough that he can return to the form of his youth. he probably knows that he just has to turn up to be given a spot though.
