Autopsy 8 point loss to Essendon

We won inside 50’s easily but our forward line has to currently be one of the worst in the league.
Yet people were in here saying it needed to be exactly what was put out. It was clear to everyone last week worked because it was a DEFENDER in Hamling doing a defensive job in the forward line. He didn't have a clue what to do when not being a defender and sat back waiting for HIS man to move.

I don't care if Rampe's cooked, he at least plays a physical and accountable style.

Roberts, Blakey, Florent, Lloyd and Bice are soft as tissue paper and can't be played together as part of the same backline.

Because gasp he is a defender put it this way you may as well delist Buller now if you think Francis or Hamling are better options.

They tried harder and deserved to win, we shouldn’t have even got that close.

We missed a lot of shots, but our forwards don’t lead and we just bomb constantly forward, and our forwards are at the back against 2, how’s that going to work.

That forward system is poor coaching, it’s the same even when we win.

Hamling was a decent defender for us this year, why is he forward, he has no ****en idea at this level forward. Francis was ok forward then goes back, then forward. I don’t blame Hamling for his shit forward work, why’s the playing there, fine last week he basically defended Taylor but he isn’t a forwards arseh*le.

Paton is a dud , get him out of the team, literally pick any other player on the list please, ****ing park Green in the side, I Dgaf.

We have so many teases of players

Campbell - yeah he looks good when he gets it, shame he basically runs around the outside all day

Hayward- again a star when he’s going well and he clearly can play, I loved his year last year etc, but this long lapses where you wonder if he is playing .

Florent, good evasion skills, but WTF does he add

Jmac, he worked hard again but as much as I defended him last week, WTF is he actually doing,

Then guys like Cleary, Corey Warner they have a nice moment but mainly do nothing,

Roberts **** me he is putrid with it, he gets so many useless touches, no one cares.

Rowbottom - yeah he tackles. It stands out in this side because **** all others want too, but does he really do enough with the ball.

Jordon - yeah he tags and it’s great but do we even utilise him?

mclean- looks like ****ing Superman for 2 minutes than plays like Cinderella without her shoe for the rest.

Sheldrick - we don’t even seem to like him

Even our guns are lazy at times, Chad and Heeney are shadows of last year.

That dons side today was not close to their best, they didn’t even play that well, hence we almost pinched it, but we didn’t deserve to in all honesty.

Rampe is good one week shit the next, sign of age.

Lloyd is just plain cooked and crispy

Wicks again good most of the day, Mccartin who we tried to make into a forward, **** knows why , was good and Grundy worked hard but he played against old man river .

Blakey was decent today and I have been harsh on him, but he is often non effective or does his dinky ****ing kicks, wasted by the coaches imo

Seriously the lack of effort, one I remember was Roberts spectating while Florent tackled against 2 dons, the amount of times there’s an outnumber at the ball in the middle then they kick forward and still out number us. Caddy plays on near the goals to score- yes he probably does anyway, but every swans defender just walks off and assumes, they stop and appeal for frees constantly. They don’t run. They don’t tackle, they don’t lead they don’t lower eyes, just ****en millionaires,

We got away with it a lot in 2024 and yeah chuck the missing guys in and we probably do against most weeks this year, until it matters.

That was pathetic , an unwillingness to work on the basics and the margin is probably a bad thing in a way, to me it just exposed how lazy we were for most of the game.

JMac got us back into the game with his running, attack on the ball and that goal he slotted from 60 was sublime. Then he proceeded to trash our comeback with a couple of rubbish options........
It really summed him up TBH. Just a pleasure to watch when on and can do things that very few in the game can do...and they he does things that, um, very few in the game can do.

Loved Cleary's 1 percenters, showed a bit of ticker tonight. A few of our goals tonight came off him.

10 disposals and 4 of them were turnovers with 0 1 percenters he was garbage

I agree mainly, but it was not on the forward lack of leading. It had to be coaching. Francis has been a good lead up forward since he has been there, but nope. No leading up. You watch the times he has been up forward and its not just him leading up and getting it, its him doing it on a regular basis and not getting used. That didn't happen today. It's not that he simply decided, you know what was working for me and I was looking like an actual AFL player. Well I'm going to go completely away from that today.

Amartey McDonald and Papley won’t make ****en any difference if the plan is forwards stagnant and get behind 2 opposition defenders and midfielders kick high to the sky.

Buddy may have turned crap into gold but he isn’t coming back.

We have far superior players but they had a better team (for a limited time only). I thought their green shirt players also helped a bit too. Didn't make the difference IMO but sure didn't help. Let's be kind we're talking about a team who's supporters haven't seen their team win a final for 21 years.

Clearly the players came in with the wrong attitude today, jogging around like they thought they’d walk it in against an inexperienced side. Incredibly embarrassing! The senior players in particular should be ashamed of that first half, truly ashamed.

I agree it has to be a set instruction from the coaches, we don’t want you guys leading out, we want quick entries and hold up and the mids will push forward.

Francis is basically being asked like Hamling to occupy a defender or something it seems.

Francis only chance is to get on his bike and lead out and hit him in front.

I only remember one forward lead and mark all game in space and that was McLeans last miss

Agree with all of that, I think Rampe isn’t cooked we are actually doing him a disservice.

He isn’t who he was. He was stellar last week , but then we go back to asking him to play undersized tall defender.

  • Copy and Paste of the Port game. Disgusting first half, then we still should've won in the end but didn't because we're abysmal in-front of goal. For all the bad things this year, goal kicking has pissed away 3 wins and our season.
  • When we play with intent to move the ball and be aggressive and proactive, we can play good football. Problem is we have to fall 5-6 goals down most weeks to start playing that way. When we dawdle with the ball and chip it around meaninglessly we seem to fall asleep because our tackling becomes as pathetic as our ball movement.
  • After a good coaching performance last week with some proactive moves, Cox butchered it this week. Completely negative coaching. The kick it long pre-game message gave them exactly what they wanted for a half. How did we allow them 2 spares in the hotspot given that pregame message. Thought Paton was going to be the sub, the role he was given was almost comical...why were we scared of Martin, who's basically their version Jake Lloyd....why would you waste your time tagging that. It's good that Cox makes moves....but he has to make a lot of them because of ridiculous decisions he makes first up like that.
  • Sheldrick gave us something when he came on, his disposal was good as well....I've been concerned with his kicking at times but given how much some others butcher it and keep getting selected, disposal is not the reason to hold him back any further. Should have absolutely started ahead of Paton. Given how soft we are at times, give him a go from the start and see if he can help out add some early hardness which is constantly lacking from our starts most weeks since mid 24.
  • Chad and Heeney have to carry way too much load. Good second halves from them, but there's a lot of other players from the side who were 3 games clear last year who are on the park not giving anywhere near enough consistently.

Yeah, the last 5-10 minutes we butchered chance after chance to goal..

but still, The last 5 minutes there were non calls or calls against:
Corey warner on the goal line, was it a behind, was he tackled or ws it a behind
Warner again tunneled under the ball and no call
Hamling, alleged dangerous tackle?? what?
50 against (cleary?) when the ball had been touched after the kick and should bot have bene a mark

what a schmozzle
