At the end of the day the AFL stuffed up making two extra teams when it should removed 4. The money wasted on these two club and sustaining clubs that can't sustain themselves should have been spent on making state leagues big. 12 team super comp would be amazing with such a little difference between top and bottom. 6 games on free to air. State league teams all having juniors which become the state league for juniors, similar to TAC cup in Vic. State footy for u18s, u23s and seniors from state leagues.

So perhaps your team's own words should be noted:

From October last year:

"
Carlton could be in for a busy trade period, with list manager Shane Rogers declaring his club's interest in recruiting GWS tall Kristian Jaksch, as well as Bulldogs pair Liam Jones and Jason Tutt.

But Rogers has ruled out any chance of Bulldogs free agent Shaun Higgins heading to Visy Park.

"We've never, ever spoken to Shaun Higgins," Rogers told AFL Trade Radio. "We did inquire through his manager for about a five-minute window where we just wanted to know what was going on and [ask] was he prepared to move?

"At the time they said, 'He's not, he's a Bulldogs player,' and that was enough for us. We moved on."

or these bon mots from the same time:

"Pick six is a really vital pick and that player needs to be a 150-game player, so we're reticent to give that up," Rogers said. "So we'll have to try and work out some other things.

"Jaksch has indicated he would like to come to us ... we're in negotiations with them [GWS] and we've had some chats along the way.

"That might be a difficult trade to get done, but we'll continue to be in there fighting and try and get our man."

Of course we now know they did give up pick 7 for Jaksch and Whiley.

Oh and then they gave up Jeff Garlett and pick 83 for picks 61 and 79.

This was the Carlton take on that trade:

"It was time for him to have a fresh start and we are pleased to have been able to facilitate that by reaching agreement on a trade with Melbourne.

"Securing the fourth round draft pick gives us some options in terms of the remaining trade window and the upcoming AFL draft. We will now look to use that selection to continue improving our list as we look with optimism to season 2015."

Even the AFL can't save Carlton from themselves.
Bootsma, Watson, Mclean, Grigg, Hampson and Lucas for first round picks? FML.

At least the Gold Coast and GWS are helping expand the competition. Plenty of Victorian based clubs that simply exist and suck up funds while adding nothing to growing the game.

That happens when your team is a rabble. I started school and Carlton is in its darkest period ever. Finish school and the same shit is happening again and the chances of Carlton getting near GWS and others in the next ten years is extremely low.
2 and a half years ago, you sacked your coach (a premiership winning great of the club) who got your team to finals series' & bought in Mick Malthouse as the "cream" to take that talented list to a flag that Ratten couldn't seem to do.

I totally agree it is all the AFL's fault you guys are poo, and expansion is the reason why...

Still just a good young team at this stage. They'll be good but the Dogs are pretty close talent wise IMO.

Also a herald sun article at the start of the season on the most sought after out of contract players 6 of them were from GWS.
2 of them Cameron and Smith re-signed. We've got WHE, Treloar, Coniglio and Shiel left to go. Strong rumours that we've already signed Shiel & Treloar but waiting on one or both the other boys to sign to announce.

I personally don't believe the rumour, but it's out there anyway.

The Callan Ward / Leon Cameron dynasty is beginning. A journey that started in the western suburbs of Melbourne for both men.

Carlton have never wanted equality. In fact Carlton have historically been on of the worst problems in the game for achieving league equality.

Yet here we are with GWS, a soon to be manufactured premiership side/dynasty.

Call me a whinging Carlton fan, sooking because his joke of a team is getting arse whipped by them but it's the truth and you know it.

I had to make this thread after hearing some of the tripe David King speaks. "how good is this?", "they have a great amount of talent" etc. No shit you fat campaigner Kingy. Give any team the concessions they've had and we'll see this kind of play.

Is this what we want footy fans? We talk up equality, bring in ridiculous caps on footy department spending and yet here we are with a side in GWS and possibly Gold Coast that will dominate the league up in areas where quite frankly nobody gives a rat toss about football.

Draft concessions, mini drafts etc. What is this? The 1980s? Why don't we bring back zoning and salary cap cheating if we're gonna be like that. And before you have a go at me for going for Carlton, I wasn't aroids back then so have never agreed or barracked for sides that were pumped up by that.

What other sports league has ever manufactured teams like this? I doubt you would find any.

Just need the AFL to keep helping out the Swans while teams like Brisbane, Carlton etc will struggle to be relevant.

It is an absolute farce and get real if you want to enjoy these fake ******* franchises dominate the league.

P.S if you want to talk about what team I follow or if I supported expansion from day one ( I never liked it) head off to the bay.
Lie back and think of the dollars.

So man up or are just sooking, a me me me type? What benefits do the Blues enjoy over other clubs?

As an Eagles fan my club enjoys an extra fixture at home v the Dockers, so that 0.5 game a year $s in the pocket.

Tell us all ...

Where did I ever blame the AFL for Carlton's ineptness?

Learn to read
Well said nba ... been a while since the Blues did much right, e.g the reintroduction of Steve Silvagni without (or so it appears), without a clear plan that includes input from the coach, and a President who doesnt know if there a plan. Thats this week.

AFL & equality is simply code for taking funds from the financial clubs & giving it to clubs that cant do it for themselves.

Growing the game strategy is a different issue to equality, compre?

Give you an example of an inequality from an Eagles fan view, we travel 10 times, the Blues travel 6 - that is inequality.

You are making a beginner's mistake in thinking that the AFL has any real interest in 'equality'. It does not run a fair and even sporting competition. It runs an entertainment business for the benefit of those employed by that business. It does not care about equality, fairness, history or the fans. It cares about 'the brand', growing the business and maximising revenue.

GWS and GCS are manufactured clubs, given concessions to help them succeed, but so were Sydney and West Coast. It's ridiculous to talk of 'fake franchises' when the whole competition is manufactured. Clubs are invented and disposed of, there is a compromised fixture, a compromised salary cap, a compromised draft. In recent years Carlton have benefited from the AFL's fixing but even the AFL cannot redress where a club is being consistently badly run.

I think the trade off for the wa teams is a greater share of the population for support. It's why both clubs are obscenely rich.

In Victoria there's so many teams fighting for a slice of an extremely well divided pie in which collingwood have taken dibs on most

Whinge whinge whinge....a little history lesson I guess the AFL didn't want a repeat of the Brisbane Bears fiasco when they were set up. If my memory serves me correctly to those who were too young or weren't born, every club had to surrender a player or two of some quality. Carlton being the arrogant pricks they were sent up Bruce Reid (father of Sam and Ben), who had already decided to retire....

Sydney & Brisbane still can't sustain themselves when their performances drop so I'll say conservatively they'll need at least 25 more years of AFL support.

No wonder interest in the heartland of Victoria is declining at a rate and for many it's a loss of hope, a loss of fairness & equality and nothing to do with the price of the pies & chips.
Reading between the lines it sounds like Victorian teams can't sustain themselves when their performances drop. Welcome to the AFL ladies.

I remember that time. The crap that was offered was mindblowing.

Late edit:

Carlton offered Michael Aitken, a player who was by the time he had been offered was a doctor who was overseas, Bruce Reid, who had retired and Peter Kenny, who never played a game for them.

They later offered Neil Gaughan who had played 3 games for the Blues and played 3 for the Bears.

Carlton generosity....

its fine

GWS will rise due to concessions and hopefully on the back of that, succeed on and off the park. the club can stabilise it business model and then it faces the challenge of continuing its success with normal draft concessions.

a trade off? ... money ... equality is taking some money from them, aka WA footy fans who pay the price & subsidise those, not all who dont pay the price in another geographic sector of the country.

After reading some of the comments it's evident all of people here have never lived in QLD or NSW.... We need all the help we can get to get started people just don't love AFL like they do in VIC, WA or SA. Actually I would say AFL is hated by the masses of people that are here. To keep interest on the Gold Coast and Western Sydney they need a team that consistently wins otherwise they won't exist in 20 years time
