Prediction Assistant coaching changes

Believe J Pod business is going thru a growth period, so he may step down from a full-time assistant coach,
Heard he will still be involved with the club but not to the levels of this year.
Wasn't that announced a couple of weeks ago?

From the sounds of it, he's just a development coach, so I'm not massively concerned about it. He's there to drill the youngsters with what Pyke and Pods want.
I'm confused has Pods quit as an Assistant Coach or not??

Mentioned and talk about but not announced. As they are still working out the details.
:thumbsu:Thanks .....i thought it was a fait accompli that Pods was gone

We back the system in no matter what and never deviate from the plan.

It's been hammered into then and is both a strength and a weakness.

We believe strongly that you win by everyone playing their role better.

Players like Jacobs would feel like they are going against the mantra of the side and not setting the right example if he deviated from instructions.

The probablem with this systematic approach is it dilutes accountability and players fail to take ownership of what is happening out there on the field.

I get the benefits, but weve got the balance wrong. On a scale with Malcolm blight up one end and Neil Craig on the other, we're definitely on the Craig end.
I reckon most coaches in the AFL are now relent on their system and fail to change things on the fly.

Even Clarko struggled when Danger got injured and went down to a traditional FF and never left the 50m arc. It stretched their defensive zone and gave a look that has not been seen in the AFL for nearly ten years. He had no answer for it, players are not used to defending such a position one on one and really struggled. Not just the pure contest when the ball was in the area but also team formation once the ball left the area..

I tend to think had Danger not got injured, the Hawks would have won that game.

As Bunji said, it has its good points and bad. The system got us to a GF but allowed us to be exploited once there. You can't play the same system once 2 key members of it aren't their.

If a player like Atkins goes down, even Hartigan or Jenkins, you can cover it but Smith and Gov were so crucial.

We have to become more fluid in gamestyle. Yes we won games in different situations this year but the systems remained largely similar.

Every club is the same though, Richmond will be worked out like the Dogs were and will need to change.

Personally i think there needs to be a way to set up the system as a foundation, but to also encourage and back in the players inctincts to read and play the game on its merits.

Easier said than done, I know.

The big issue in terms of our replacement for McGovern was that we failed to understand which of his attributes we should have been trying to replace and unfortunately we were so dominant in the PF, as well as the romance around it, we got lulled into a false sense of security that we had the right guy. The only reason the 4 talls work is because Gov is so good at the defensive pressure and ground ball aspects. IMO Hampton and Menzel were far better options as they offered similar level defensive capabilities, as well as offensive capabilities. There’s little doubt though that his loss was difficult to replace, although the other 5 forwards should have been enough potency.

Smith we absolutely didn’t have a great replacement and still don’t.

I think Richmond will similarly struggle next year, relied on too many average players playing out of their skins, with an unbelievable finals draw given they finished 3rd and rode the media wave of support, with a gameplan that relied simply on manic pressure and hoping the opposition would crack. It’s nigh on impossible to maintain that pressure type game for seasons on end.

if Jpod is phasing out hopefully we plan a big offer to Rutten (or another quality replacement but he is the obvious). A departure with notice helps plan for a good succession as opposed to a situation like Teague where we would have likely gone into the year thinking he would stay.

Maybe bringing Hart in is the succession already.

Hopefully Rutten has a year to run with Richmond and thats why we are coming to an arrangement with Pods where he stays involved with Hart helping the load with an understanding already in place for Rutten to return post contract

:(
We play "pretty" footy - high scoring ,exciting , fast.
At times this year I would watch some passages of play and think "Jesus - you shouldn't be able to do that " so great was it.
Francou I reckon will add a bit of "ugly" to that

I'm really looking forward to next year

I truly hope so. In recent years we have become accustomed to the phrase 'we didn't turn up today'. Playing any game of footy and coming away beaten through non competitiveness is just not acceptable. Let the Pear do it to the tune of 119 but not my club. I don't believe so much in Plan B's but surely we have a regrouping approach for the times when our free flowing game has been stifled, that resets our play to down dirty grunt ugly football ? I know that no matter what, there are games where nothing will go right, but I'm sick of the 'didn't turn up today' label that is becoming enshrined in the game. Give me more grunt and more occasions like Sloane flattening Danger - even though it was probably an accidental outcome.

Ps we showed something in that Geelong game, some real endeavour. We should have sailed into the GF. :(

And yeah, I wish Sauce would give it a 20m thump forward when he dominates a contest as he did GF day.

We'd lose clearances because the mids wouldn't be ready for it

Yeah it’s about finding that happy medium. Craig was all about the system and did well without gaining the ultimate success, but if you go the other way you get Sando, who gave us one good year where we successful off the basis of winning the contested ball and letting the rest sort itself out. Trouble is good clubs work out how to counteract this easily as was seen.

Pykes certainly similar to Craig in this regard, but then Bomber Thomson, Alistair Clarkson and Paul Roos we’re also big on system. It’s the way to go for sustained success, trouble is you’re always going to be vulnerable on the day to that upstart that runs on extreme emotion/effort Richmond style. The battle was lost against Richmond in the 2nd quarter when we couldn’t convert our chances. 0.5 to 4.1, that’s the game right there. We gave them the sniff and belief that if they kept doing what they were doing, they’d win, we needed them questioning their game style and ability. Instead we went into half time having missed 5 shots on goal, allowing them a late surge, questioning if our game plan was right.

He started doing that more this year, which I was pleased to see. It’s still not a consistent part of his game though.

True. But they do talk before each bounce.

Plus truly great mids read Ruckman hands and body language.

I once read that Buckly could tell 2hat an opposition Ruckman was going to do by reading hands and body language. He he said he learnt this partly due to never working with a dominant Ruck at Collingwold.

The boys did turn up. They were up with minutes to go in the second quarter. We just got ground down due to lack of running power. This bullshit about not turning up needs to stop. We were hamstrung at the selection table.
we were physically dominated by Richmond of all teams - and the hamstring was McGovern's

Yes, I think it can work well, especially if the guy(s) coming in off the front of the square get involved. I'm no master tactician, but - punch forward towards the guy coming off the front of the square, one mid runs with the ball to help him out, the others spread for the receive, bingo, forward entry. Something like that.

We had Richmond covered in every deportment, every position, every facet of the game and then some, but effort.

like ports 07 granny, throw the dvd in the bin, forget it happenned. move on and never play players leaving again.

Easy: too tall and slow at both ends with limited flexibility against our smaller opponent and compounded by going in with known injured players.

Solution: forget the game, review WTF went down in selection committee.
It's obvious what we did. We backed in the side that had smashed their opposition in finals the two weeks previously. Exactly the same thing that Richmond did.

The frustrating thing is, if we'd gone smaller, our smalls should have smashed them. Their structure was gimmicky and relied on average role players.

Hang on we did not lose GF we got thrashed .
Sam won the ruck but fed it to Tigers all day so why Mr Matt and midfield coach did we not do something different .
Glad Francou on board and JPod obviously not going .
When are we getting rid of those other 2
