Analysis Back to The Future, Re-Developing Victoria Park.

I would much prefer if we turned Olympic Park into a boutique stadium. Much better area, better access in terms of public transport. Victoria Park shouldn't be tainted, it's a Holy site for Collingwood.

Announced that Richmond is set to redevelop Punt rd by putting in better capacity, tear down old Dyer stand, better cater for womens football, and increase patronage from 5k to 8k.

Any further news on our state government funded upgrade to Vic Park yet?

Improve the lights perhaps at Punt Road?

Vic Park has transport links but too many issues with residential and council. Realistically the only way is probably like you said a demolishing of the Holden Centre and a 45-50k stadium on that. Not sure if there would be room though.

And for the investment it would only be worth it if we could monopolise it... have a ground of unique size that we don't have to share with another team. Then it becomes a real home ground and give us an advantage advantage like Geelong gets at Skilled.

We cant demolish the main building at the Holden Centre. Its the former Olympic Pool and its heritage listed. The club needs Heritage Victoria's permission to do most works there.

Good luck to the Tigers with their Punt Road development, but they'll have trouble demolishing the old Jack Dyer Stand. It has heritage value.

And I think we only lease it (might be wrong) on a 99 year lease

Geelong should be playing 11 home games at their stadium, if Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond or Hawthorn have to play there, stiff bickies. That's the competition. Adds a certain flavour to it. I'd love to get a ticket to a Geelong v Collingwood game at skilled, something different.

It’s on Crown land, so yes you’re probably right. The Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust are the Commitee of Management under the Crown Land Act (I think).

I miss the old days when each club had its home ground advantage. But Cats don't want to play 11 home games in Geelong. Clubs put in fixture requests at the start of the year and Cats want to play big drawing teams at the MCG rather than have a lock out and lose the home gate revenue.

Fair point re Holden Centre. But Age article I read said that Dyer stand was built in 1914 but was not formally heritage listed. Certainly has heritage significance though..

Local councils can have their own heritage listing outside of the register. Although I can’t recall if crown land is subject the council planning permits or ministerial planning permit. Vicky Park can shed some light?

You are right about the local heritage listing.

Crown land is normally subject to local planning approval, unless the proposed development has been referred to the Minister. That would happen where its of such importance that it’s taken out of the realm of local decision making (which is often driven by local agendas, elected Councillors caving into local residents demands, etc).

The development of the Punt Road Oval would have to be such a case. It’s in the City of Melbourne, but I can’t see the good residents of Jolimont and East Melbourne being happy about the potential scale of it. You’d think it would be a Ministerial matter, given the project’s broader significance.

While Richmond the club is obviously linked to Richmond the suburb, the latter is in Yarra and not Melbourne, so it’s not a City of Yarra issue.

If it’s called in by the minister they’ll bypass much of the council planning scheme. I might look it up to see if there’s a heritage overlay.

Punt Road Oval is in a heritage overlay, the East Melbourne & Jolimont Precinct (HO2). So heritage controls apply to the site, although the Jack Dyer Stand is not individually listed.

Will be interesting to see how the proposed redevelopment plays out...

One way to satisfy us all would be to play one game per season at Victoria Park.

Let’s calls it the Collingwood Carnival. Where we will play against an interstate minnow and it will be annual celebration of our heritage. A black and white heaven starting with the VFL then the AFL at 2:10pm.

This annual game will be the hottest ticket in town. Higher in demand than the ANZAC day game and only second to the grand final.
The capacity for the day will be just over 30,000 so a ballot process will need to occur in order to get a ticket.
So special will this game be they will sell memberships based around it.

So what needs to be done in order to host a single game of AFL football at Victoria Park in the 21st century having regards for OH & S, terrorism threats, no smoking laws, emergency management plans, parking and public transport and environmental protection of fauna as this is now a public park.

Fencing/Sealing off the entire perimeter of the ground

Areas that are now open to the public would need to be temporarily sealed/fenced off with temporary fencing which is a cheap and achievable concept. This will avoid a crowd crush and make sure everyone goes home safely. Once the fencing is erected it should be draped in black and white.

Measuring, Surveying standing room sections.

Ascertain how many people can safely be accommodated. Design and map specific standing room sections and tickets to be allocated accordingly. Very similar to standing room at the Grand Final.

An up to date venue map would have to be designed and drawn up with every seat allocated and standing room allocations known.

Temporary seating and food and beer tents.

Premium fence line seating to be brought in along the fence line of the old rush stand and along the Yarra Falls end. Beer and food tents to be set up at the top of each standing room area.

Temporary removal of existing bench seats and barbecues would need to be done in order to make room for food and beer tents.

Smoking areas and portable toilet blocks

Smokers to smoke on the street behind the Sherrin stand and The Bob Rose stand.
Portable toilet block to be put in near the Turner street entrance.

Corporate Marquees

Could be put up near the Turner street entrance. $$$$

Other issues to be addressed

Bob Rose stand – currently a lot of it is leased out to government agencies.

What is the availability of up-to-scratch Kitchen facilities for corporate diners in the Bob Rose stand?

Car parking? Players and officials only

Public transport? Would there be an issue for a crowd of 30000?

OHS – trips and hazards

Fauna protection – young trees planted could be damaged.

Residential amenity – noise, litter, smokers

Ticket prices – minimum price for an adult standing room would have to be close to $100. This is a special once a year game so worth it.

Total cost to bring in temporary fencing, seats, labour, security, event staff, catering. Unknown?
Total revenue for one game in excess of $3million

This is just randomly thought up and I’m sure Eddie and some expert events management people could easily put this together

Lets’s be realistic. MCG is where we need to play our footy and rebuilding VicPark is not achievable without a co-tennant. One game per year at our spiritual home would satisfy me and I would pay a premium to be there.
