Effort may not change but it’s the performance
And that's the definition of a downhill skier, when your effort changes depending on how you're going.

You could say JJ was one for sure

What I'm saying is that his selection NOW means that, not previously.

The fact he hasn't played in the first 2 games and especially last night means a bit. Normally off a long break you'd pick your best prepared guys, and normally that's DMac. I was almost certain he would be in the 22 come Thursday.

He wasn't.

OK, but his non-selection when nobody has been selected underneath him doesn't mean that he's not next in line. I think it's time to be questionable, rather than confident. I've been confident in the past, we've been easy to read. But maybe not now, I think we might be about to turn the corner required. And as much as I'm hopeful and confident of that, it concerns me no end that Gibbs got a game and Mackay has been on the cusp of selection. But that's me and I will never try and suggest that I look towards the happy place of our club.

I don't think he's next in line, I think Hamill is

If he’s not a downhill skier his performance should be better, only plays better when the side is up and running
Again I disagree, he's always had questionable disposal. If those passes hit targets last night we still get belted and his game looks better.

Anyway, it's besides the point now

The issue with Lynch is developing our new forward structure. Ideally we would be playing 1 of Himmelberg or Frampton with Fogarty & 1 of Walker or Lynch... so we have a decent back up ruck option. We can't play the 4 taller players.

We may be able to get by with just ROB against some sides with the shorter game time, but not when the opposition have 2 genuine ruckmen.

Also, if Himmelberg comes in, it allows us to swap him with McAsey back/forward as needed

In his early days here he played behind the ball a bit, and certainly with the Bays in the SANFL. Its worth a try.

He did it for a few minutes in round 1 and again yesterday. He's not far from retirement, but it's a massive tick that Nicks put him back there and he's good both times. Still, it's time to consign the 'Lynch role' to the dustbin. He's better behind the ball because he's shit ahead of it unless we're winning a game by a few goals.

Yep it's time to start that way

I think there is enough smoke that Hamil is next in line. That report of his 2nds game was rather glowing compared to everyone else who they said played well.

So far, Mackay has shown he's on the outer with Nicks (relative to his 2019 position), though this is the week that will cement that. We keep Mackay to emerg., and his career is done. Gibbs, I'm not as confident he is done at the club.

At least with the shorter quarters, 100 points losses are less likely this year.
True... but I wish the AFL allowed the proposed expanded 6 man bench, because this would have allowed us to give more opportunities to our younger players... which has to be our priority.

But yes, shorter quarters hopefully shortens any beltings.

Hamill or Sholl... I'm not fussed which first. We need to give both a decent go this year.

The only reason to play Gibbs or Mackay is if we have plenty of experienced players out injured & we need their experience. Ditto with Hartigan if Talia is out

McAdam needs to be picked. I don’t care about his work rate or fitness. That’s crows talk. He is talented. Pick him.
Sounds like he might be given Nicks talked up his performance in the scratch match. Would bring him in for Lynch, but more likely it’ll be for Crocker.

I agree the only point to play Hartigan would be if Talia got injured.

That said, Gibbs and Mackay would only get a game under me is if no one else was fit, period. Even super raw prospects like Ayce Taylor get a game before them for me. Both should be paid out and delisted/retired (well, Mackay is just delist/retire).

Do we know if all our players are going to the hub ??

West Coast only had 13 to pick from in their scratchy yesterday, surely they didn't have that many injuries ??

I would be pretty disgusted in the club if there was any player that wasn't going to the hub.

I'm pretty sure West Coast have 7-8 injuries at the moment, so there may have been 2-3 who just didn't get a game for whatever reason.

Firstly have to get 2nd ruck fwd in as that was ridiculous watching Tex and Fog trying to ruck.
We dropped to get more ball pressure from our forwards which definitely didn't happen so need to get more targets or bigger bodies for those rushed kicks.
Selection revolves around Sloane and Kelly fitness ,though expect both get up.
Who they drop depends on Nicks thinking and wether prepared to back up words on those that didn't apply off ball pressure.
Either McAdam or Davis will definitely come in for hopefully Murphy .
Frampton in for Keays with Jones playing mainly mid.
Feel if Nicks serious about creating more committed defensive pressure on the mids he should drop Rat or Seeds and think might be Rat.
Think Hamill or Gibbs gets return game seeing against young GC team and Milera to wing or forward.
If Kelly out Butt in and McAsey play Fwd and back .
Believe Crocker did enough for another game along with persisting with McAsey and McHenry who both totally over whelmed.
If we can keep McPherson ton he park ,believe not he is not far away from selection and will immediately cement spot.

Players could choose to stay home, but as pointed out it's a shorter time away now.

My thinking is we need to keep a minimum experienced players in our side & only if we had a really bad injury run would they be needed. E.g. Say both Crouches, Sloane & Smith all injured.

KPPs are different, our young guys sans Fog are all slight bodies. I'm all for rotating them through.

I get the idea of experience, though it needs to be worthwhile experience. Mackay is not offering anything outside of increasing the average games played, much like Gibbs.

Unfortunately, I think the Port game just showed its rather dangerous to trust our experienced players at the moment. Now some of them are salvageable and can play a role if and when we do rebound. We're going to have to go with a fine-tooth comb through them first. Gibbs and Mackay are two players who we can already put a line through.

It's probably the worst case that we have to put faith in our kids to lead this rebuild instead of having some experienced players leading the way.

Hamill is the more rounded player of the two and I think eventually will move to the midfield where his speed will be an asset....my only knock on Hamill has been despite silky foot skills he goes the short option too often, needs to go deeper with his disposals more often, the one thing Sholl does better is go for meterage.

I think eventually Hamill may become the player we had all hoped Wayne Milera would furnish into.

Sides devoid of experience get hammered each week. I want us playing the kids this year at every opportunity, but not without some experienced heads in the team.
