Taylor Walker......
Just take notice of how badly the ball is delivered to Walker and that he is 90% of the time in a 1-on-2. Usually it's a dinky high kick from Matt Crouch or Laird. Good luck anyone marking those.

He's not a great contested mark, but rarely gets outmarked which is the bare min he has to do.

I'd prefer we dropped Sloane who is the golden child, but when was the last time he took hold of the game? He is a good mid, but he's his impact is minimal, and that's not what we need from the Captain

There were two chasing efforts (that i noticed particularly) from Milera where he just gave up/slowed to a jog to watch his player accelerate to get the ball and that's unforgivable. If he's injured then he shouldn't have been playing.
That's been an issue for a few years now - CEY, Matt Crouch, Atkins, Betts - they have all watched as their player runs past them, only to make an effort if they see the ball is about to land there, but it's too late.

The goal Duursma kicked from a mark in the square at the Southern end was an example. He ran hard, our blokes watched.

My team for this week:

First of all the 'MUST PICK' players

B: Talia
HB: Doedee
C:
HF:
FF: Fog

1R: O'Brien

Ok so that is the full list of players who pick themselves. Now the 'should' picks

B: Brown Talia
HB: Doedee Milera
C: Smith
HF:
FF: Fog

1R: O'Brien

And now the 'well we have to put someone there' picks....

B: Brown Talia Hamill
HB: Doedee Butts Milera
C: Smith Jones McHenry
HF: B Crouch Himmelberg Davis
FF: McAsey Fog Laird

1R: O'Brien M Crouch Keays (tag)

INT: Crocker Poholke McAdam Gallucci (midfield minutes)

NOTES:
Zero midfield minutes for B Crouch. He plays wing and half forward only.
Lots of midfield minutes for Jones, Poholke, Gallucci
Some midfield minutes for McHenry as well as a wing role (he's an elite runner!)
McAsey forward to hopefully boost his confidence. Would be nice to see him clunk a few marks and kick a goal or two.
Himmelberg to at least provide a contest at CHF. He is also to ruck. Both will be better than what Walker currently provides.
Laird forward. Hospital kicks are ok if they go through the goals...
Time to see if Poholke is at least as effective as the Crouch boys.
Keays to tag. It's his best chance.

So that means;

OUT:
Kelly (Concussion)
Seedsman (0 tackles)
Walker (cooked)
Lynch (turnovers)
Atkins (downhill skier)
Sloane (inj)

IN:
Hamill
Butts
Davis
Himmelberg
Poholke
McAdam
Gallucci

I know many will say "but if you pick that team we lose by 10 goals". It's probably true. But if we pick the same blokes we have for the last 2 years, we probably lose anyway. Might as well start developing other players to see who will shine.

As a simple metric of "poor effort and poor execution", I've calculated the number of effective disposals each player has had. This is simply total disposals * disposal efficiency. It's not a perfect metric, but it serves for this purpose.

Excluding Kelly (inj) and players with < 10 AFL games experience, the following were our worst 12 performers on Saturday night:
  1. Crocker - 3
  2. Fogarty - 4
  3. Smith - 4
  4. Keays - 5
  5. Murphy - 5
  6. Sloane - 6 ** injured in 3rd quarter
  7. Jones - 6
  8. Seedsman - 7
  9. Walker - 7
  10. Talia - 7
  11. Brown - 7
  12. Doedee - 7
Matt Crouch is top of the list, with 17 effective disposals. Lynch is 6th, with 10.

Interestingly, Milera, who many (including me) thought was poor, is 2nd on the list with 13 effective disposals. Atkins had 8, which is enough to put him into the upper half of the ladder.

Here's the list of turnovers:

1. Laird - 8
2. Lynch - 7
3. B. Crouch - 5
4. Smith - 4
5. Brown - 4
6. M. Crouch - 4
7. Jones - 4
8. McHenry - 4
9. Sloane - 3
10. Seedsman - 3
11. O'Brien - 3

Laird had 10 effective disposals, and 8 turnovers. Lynch also 10 effective disposals, and 7 turnovers. Smith with 4 effective and 4 turnovers.

Disgraceful from senior players

Lynch's turn overs are still the highlight to me.

Walker has lost the 2nd effort now though, and it's his own delivery that is the biggest issue. He's almost as big a hack kick as Laird.

Sloane is a good mid, we need those. We need to bring the kids around him.

This list is much more impactful to me then total disposals

He has lost agility and pace, meaning he's now playing like Andy Otten did in his last 4 years. His skills are in our top echelon (that's not saying much).

Agree Sloane is a 'good' mid, but nothing more. From what I've seen since he has been captain, it hasn't elevated his game at all. Ever since Sam Gibson tagged him in Tassie, his output has dropped. Needs to lift like a Captain should

It's a valid point... but there could be more to it than that. Laird, Lynch & Crouch were 3 of the players who didn't stop working on Saturday night. Those turnovers were partly due to poor disposal, no argument there, but how much did the poor workrates of their teammates also contribute? If they kick it into space, and the opposition works harder to get to the ball, that's a turnover - despite the real fault lying with the lazy arsed teammate who couldn't be bothered running to get the ball. I'm not saying that they're without blame, as poor disposal is/was definitely a factor, but football is a team sport and I find it hard to blame one person for taking on the game, while so many others are putting in less effort than the spectators watching from the stands.

The real standout on that list is Smith, who managed to be a turnover merchant despite rarely having the ball in his hands.

The issue is you're expecting him to improve at 29, it rarely happens.

Sloane leads by example.

I agree with everything there except we would be wasting time and games on Gallucci when I don't see him on our list next year.

Out of curiosity, what's the basis for Smith's inclusion in this group? He was arguably our worst player on Saturday, and this was not an isolated incident - he was also one of our least effective players in the R1 loss to Sydney. If anything, he's played worse than several of the players in your "OUT" list.

How on earth does Smith make the “should” list?

True. I just hold out hope he can overcome it. And I was running out of players to pick from a side that lost in a scratch match where they only managed 2 goals...

True, but could say the same about Milera as well. It shows how bad we are going that we have so few must and should picks...
Milera had 15 disposals, and with 86.7% DE it's hard to fault his disposal. It fair to say that his report card still reads "could do better", but he was miles better than Smith.

Here is a genuine question - how many of our players from Saturday get picked in that Port team (and directly replace a player)?

I have - Talia. Sloane over Pepper-Pig. O'Brien maybe. Anyone else clearly make it? I'm struggling.
Matt Crouch would probably find his way in as well, but your point is well made.

Hamill is the same height as Sholl. 185cm. 5cm taller tha Brown and 10cm taller than Laird.
It's the style more than anything.

Sholl plays more like a Laird or Brown, Hamill is a run and carry type.
