Absolutely, as Kelly is a far better lockdown defender and Laird is offering nothing on the offensive.
I'd keep Kellie over Laird at the moment.

Laird can't defend to save his life.

He relies on those ahead of him to apply pressure and then picks off the cheap possessions as they pop out.

Actually that could describe most of the side at the moment.

Does seem strange that we're usually soooooo reluctant to play rookies and now we draft a skinny tall who'd be the least suited to play games early and he's straight in

It's almost as though we don't know what we're doing

Dude, McAsey is around 91 kg. Hardly skinny.

Probably needs 6-7 kg but he should be at the point he can at least hold his own. We're also accepted we're in a rebuild, it would be incredibly stupid not to be playing a kid who we're basing our future around.

Got pushed around by Marshall ffs
Part of the step up from U/18's to the seniors. He was better in the second half. The more games he plays now, the sooner he'll learn to adjust

It's great if he plays

But if he's playing then the early picks we've had Doedee, Gallucci, Jones, McHenry, Schoenberg should have definitely been playing because it's far easier for them. Talls take longer, they have to play a physical one on one game etc

We don't pick the guys who are best suited to an early debut and do pick the guy who has the toughest gig.

If we drop McAsey for Hartigan in a rebuild year, we have rocks in our head.

Sure he is not as mature & may get pushed around, but who cares as the more he plays, the more he learns.

Our priority is to fast track our young talent which means playing them unless injured or need to be managed.

Yeah, I think the only way Hartigan should be played this year is as a result of injuries (and probably only to Talia)

Yup, he did.

McAsey in his second game got taught a lesson by a player who is a similar size to him, but had a few years on him to learn his craft. If Fischer is the player we think he is, he'll learn and that won't happen again. It doesn't help Fischer does like to play in front, but it's all about finding that balance between being an offensive weapon at CHB and being able to stop your opponent, which we're hoping he'll become.

We're in a rebuild. Now is the time for the young key back to learn.

For at least Doedee and Gallucci, the situation was rather different. They're both coming into a top 4 side (or close too, seeing we had the record of a top 4 team in 2016). It's forgivable they didn't get many games in their first season.

Jones, McHenry (though, he had a lot of injury issues) and Schoenberg should all be playing early though. Considering our scenario then, and now, its rather unforgivable if they don't get game time.

We're in a full-blown rebuild and are going to be bottom 2 regardless of is McAsey plays. May as well get some benefit out of this season with his development. Especially seeing the SANFL isn't a thing this year for us.

There are players named on the ground that should have been dropped.
Think selection has failed this week.

I agree, as it stands, it's not good enough. I wouldn't call it a bad failure though. I love that Mackay and Gibbs aren't back in and that Jones is starting in the midfield.

That said, we'll see tomorrow if it stays as a failure. Drop Brad Crouch, Atkins, or Smith and maybe it becomes a pass for me.

I wish people wouldn't rag on McAsey so early in his career. The poor bugger is getting a baptism of fire. When we had a stronger back line, some of our other defenders like Talia and Doedee had the luxury of a lengthy development in the SANFL. They might not agree that it was a luxury but both those guys were cherry ripe when they finally got moved up. McAsey, in comparison, just got flung into the deep end at a time when our midfield is completely non-existent and he's got to lean on a rookie senior coach and freaking Brent Reilly to develop him.

Tend to agree. Our squad isn't going to develop playing that way.
Maybe when the squad is peaking in the future, but not now.

The other issue is that our defensive group can’t hold up play to wait for others to get back so we can attack from the back half. It’s all too late by then. These guys need to be doing more than defending, Nicks’ attitude is a concern.

This is a major issue. They hold up play because not one of them has the creative ability or attacking nous to create a forward attack from the back half.

Game on Delay

Not happy to see the 12:35pm game is on delay 2 to 3 hours with the free-to-air broadcast only starting 3pm on Sunday.

They used to trot out the excuse that it was delayed because it was a home game, presumably so the crowd will attend at the stadium. They can't say that this time.

I'm glad we look to be backing in Crocker and Keays. I didn't think either was amazing but they deserve a stretch of games before they are tossed aside
I’m not glad. If this is our future, well FMD, at their best these two wouldn’t get a game in any AFL team as best 22.

It clearly shows where we are.

Hamill for Brodie Smith for mine....How he's not more under the Adelaide Big Footy blowtorch on his 2 dismal efforts in 2020 amazes me...It appears in the main he's gets no scrutiny because he's a board favourite?

Average for 2020 : 8.5 disposals, 1.5 tackles, 2 i50's, 0.5 r50's.

If one player needs a message/kick up the ass it's Brodie.
I’ve been gnashing my teeth and I’m searching for a new avatar.

You and me Brodie, it’s over. Don’t come crying back to me with a great game this week.

It’s almost as if he has drawn a line through Nicks already..
Blight has never been a fan of coaches which mainly talk defence.

Interestingly our premiership sides had great defensive record... but Blight also a fan of attacking, including good use of the ball with agreed structures.

I want McAsey to play but I was hoping at the start of the year (and still do hope) that Butts gets a go..

I thought Butts had definately earn’t a go from his performances against big bodied men in the SANFL last year.. whereas we hadn’t yet seen that from McAsey. Guess the Covid rort hasn’t helped either.

I wanted to see Butts given a go.. then McAsey.............. daylight........ then Hartigan as a very last resort.

Its disapointing to see Hartigan’s name this week instead of Butts’ name.

How they hell anyone at the club see Hartigan as worthy of a guernsey I don’t know.. Hartigan is a game changer.. his consistent ability to turn the ball over coming out of D50 changes the momentum of so many of our games in favour of our opposition.

Hartigan isn’t the future.
