Get the impression that Nicks is pushing hard for change and getting resistance.
It's never as simple as a new coach just throwing everything/one out, it'll be a slower process than we may like, but there have at least been some encouraging signs change is happening.

I imagine he may also have a list management committee breathing down his neck about not dropping certain players and killing their value. It's a difficult tightrope to walk in a transition year when you want to bring in new guys, but also potentially maximize the value of guys you want to trade out. How can we drop Brad Crouch, but also expect band 1 compensation for him come FA time?

Rowe said an interesting thing on AA tonight. No idea if it was true but he said "I messaged Brad after the game and said I hope your cheek is ok, and Brad replied with "who cares".

Made me think twice about his commitment after hearing that.
I think we knew about Brad's commitment during trade season last year. His comment to Rowe if true shows he most likely doesn't care about much. Hopefully cares enough to put in for the rest of the year to increase our compensation.

I don’t think you can under estimate the way the ball is moved out of defence. The angle of downward ball flight either makes it hard to mark or easy. There is nothing worse than being in a pack and having the ball coming down steep. On Sunday this is what we were doing, that’s why Smithy, Junior n Seed can get the ball out, where Tals, Kelly Hartigan and especially Laird struggle. None of these players should ever kick out from the square.
I've been banging on about this for 2 years now.

We've been playing with a team far too heavily skewed to slow, sideways first defenders since the end of 2017. Sure these players all had good negating traits, but we also lost what made our gameplan dangerous and hard to stop. Aggressive corridor rebound 50's with fast, low damaging kicks.

Losing that essentially kills the role of guys like Lynch and Tex who were on the end of all those balls on hard leads. And as much as JJ infuriated us, he was still great at snagging joe the goose goals that only happen with fast ball movement.

For me you need at least 2 aggressive, kick first type players in the defense to fix that balance and open up scoring opportunities for your team. If you need to axe an former AA to get them in then so be it.

Nicks should completely ignore list management who are the one's that created this mess. Nicks has a very short time to keep his job. Every game is crucial in developing a team to be competitive quickly. This year we must see what we have on our list. We need to know who is worthwhile investing in for the long term.

And that's where the tightrope comes in because if we can flip a Crouch or the like for a good/great draft pick then that can bring in the A grade young talent we don't have.

We have seen him start doing that in areas, I don't think there's much in the midfield at all currently that can fix what we've got. It's been such a huge mismanagement from a drafting/trading/development stand point he may have little choice but to stick with what we've got and hope he can turn it around for now.

Out: Walker Lynch Atkins Murphy Keays Crocker

I've been a Murphy supporter mostly but getting absolutely towelled up by a rookie on the weekend has done me I think.

It wasn't a Maybe try me somewhere else game. It was a This level is beyond me game

That was in regard to size and he's very close to all in stature but of course you'd know better, maybe if we played him where his "natural" game is we might just get an idea of what he's capable of. He never, ever struggled to get involved when he played on the ball or defence in the U18's and he most certainly didn't struggle to get involved in the SANFL when played across half back or in the few squirts he had on the ball.

Some of the AFL Draft Central team's comments from Murphy's draft year.....struggles to get involved?

Fellow Coburg pair Marcus Lentini (30 disposals) and Luke Bunker (23) were among Northern’s best, with Adelaide draftees Matthew Signorello and Lachlan Murphy managed 27 disposals and a goal each.

while Lachlan Murphy had a day out feasting on 26 disposals, 14 handball receives, two marks and three tackles. Luke Bunker was not far behind with 25 touches, 12 marks and five tackles in a hard working effort.

#9 – Lachlan Murphy

At all clearance opportunities, Murphy was the go-to player for Knights, sharking from the ruck contests multiple times. Set the Knights up going out of the contest, showing he can win a great mix of inside and outside football and using his already developed frame collecting 30 disposals.

Matthew Signorello (30 disposals) was one of the few strong performers for the Knights, while midfielders Luke Bunker and Lachlan Murphy both found the football with 25 disposals each.

Michael Alvaro’s scouting notes:

Northern Knights:
#9 Lachlan Murphy
– has genuine speed, ran hard and collected a heap of the ball. Is highly damaging with these traits, as well as his booming left foot, which is also very efficient

Lachlan Murphy racked up 37 disposals, seven marks, six tackles and a goal in an impressive performance, while Isaac Miller was one of the best for the Pioneers with 35 disposals, eight marks and six tackles.

Carlton Father/Son prospect Jake Bradley (Son of Craig) played his best game for the Knights, collecting 21 disposals showing his dash through the middle of the ground. Midfielder Luke Bunker backed up last weeks effort, again collecting 25 disposals in another impressive showing for the Knights. Lachlan Murphy‘s run out of defence was also impressive and set the Knights up moving forward.

Knights midfielders Lachlan Murphy (26 disposals), Luke Bunker (25 disposals) and Patrick Naish (20 disposals) tried hard all day, but they were unable to stem the flow of play with Filipovic dominating in the ruck.
Are you sure that is the same Lachlan Murphy?!? Doesn't sound like the one we currently have in our team.. ;)

I love the way he goes about it but in my short time watching there doesn't seem to be any traits of his that suggest he has any future beyond being a depth guy that can tackle

That may be coming when Stengle is allowed back, though I imagine we'll make him play reserves games for at least a fortnight once his suspension is over.

I'd certainly be moving Kelly on well before Laird, but Laird needs some more chop out options when he is around the pack.

Laird is getting too close to the back of the pack, so that when the ball comes out to him, he is only 1m away from where he got it, therefore the oppo can immediately pressure him, and he slams it on the boot.

Look at Geelong a few years ago, they would have a guy 15m defensive side of a pack, the hands out of the pack was a strong, fast ball and that would then go sideways to another out rigger, creating that triangle play like soccer, netball, etc some 20m from the pack. It gives the player with the ball a chance to look and get a clear kick away.

We need to spread more in defence, and break away from pack situations with intensity, rather than being like a rugby prop who trundles off Sam Jacobs style to the next stoppage.

I hope Nick's says to Brad Matt and Sloane if they all play, every time Neal gets his arms free in a tackle and dishes off to a teammate all 3 have to put $100 into the player end of season trip fund.

Wonder if that'd be incentive enough to make sure tackles stick and he doesn't get too many possessions

Would be moving both of them on .

The best news is probably that Hamill Jones Ned and McAsey will stay in the side with potentially McAdam and Sholl joining them this week.

That's exciting, well it is for me and if we can get Schoenberg in too sometime soon that would be extremely good for our future development.

There's country, laid back, dont give a heck, but i'll give 110% for the guernsey attitude and then there's Brad Crouch. That type of comment from him shows me the apathy he has for the club at the moment.

He's not up to it. He's just too small, lacks the pace, and lacks polish around goals. He tries yeah, i can't fault that, but he's been given a dozen games too many.

As I’ve described before he’s like a dog that goes around in circles looking for that lost tennis ball, I’ve never been much a fan but I’d give him one last shot in the back pocket then off to the Knackery
