I've got to watch the game but Walters kicked 2 and had 14 possessions. They are ok stats but not earth shattering. He's kicked 4 goals twice this year and 3 goals 4 times. It's also his lowest possesion count in a month.

But you if you would have put a slow Reilly on the quick Walters I'm a bit worried for you Kane because I normally rate what you post but you've lost me on this one.
My post was in reply to the knock on Otten, who did a great job curbing the influence of Mayne, who only really got of the leash when Freo made the sub & we then had to play a taller player on him.

I thought Walters was a key in giving Freo the momentum when they busted the game open, with the goals & assist. Brown just couldn't lock him down early. I just don't have the same confidence in Brown in a 1:1 contest than I do in a Laird, Smith, Henderson or Reilly... but he is only young, so hopefully he will improve.

Reilly would never have played on Walters anyway, he'd have gotten de Boer or Fyfe
Correct, I would have thought Laird would/should have played on Walters for most of the game. Closer in physical attributes.

But you alluded to Reilly doing a better job on Walters than Brown and you've suggested that Reilly would replace Brown in defence which means Reilly has to be able to handle small crumbling forwards when there are two of them in the side.

Starting to watch the game, Walters second goal was on Laird. So Brown conceded one goal to Walters.

Brown had been very good one on one this year, Reilly not so much resulting in being dropped.

Wasn't Deboer playing a role on Hendo?
Are you suggesting Reilly would have tagged Fyfe?

I'm suggesting either de Boer would have tagged Reilly as he did Henderson, or Reilly would have been played loose on Fyfe to make him accountable, entirely depends on who else was in the side in this theoretical exercise. In my view Fyfe spent more time forward of the ball than on it yesterday.

I was just making the point that there is a lot of love on this board for Brown & lot of dislike for Reilly, when Brown has only been OK at best (certainly not very good as you put it) & no where near Reilly's best. I don't have full confidence in Brown 1 on 1 like I do the other defenders. Walters broke the game open when he was on Brown. Ballantyne ran him all over the park when Freo played us here & we were lucky he was having a bad kicking day. I'm not convinced Brown is a great lock down player & he certainly doesn't provide much offensively like the others do. Hope I'm proven wrong, but yeah I don't have the same love of Brown as most do.

IMO both Reilly & Hendo will play in the back-7 rotation next year, as give us 2 decent players who can set-up the play.

When has Reilly ever done a defensive job. He was dropped for exactly that this year his man was hurting us on the scoreboard. Reillys only good footy in defense has been as a loose man. Brown is far superior in a 1 on 1 imo.

Do you watch games live?

I feel uneasy when I see the ball go to a 1:1 contest with Brown.

Brown is meant to shutdown his opponent, whereas Reilly is meant to be more offensive, so they are different types ... but in a pure 1:1 situation Reilly usually holds his own. It was his offensive input this year that led him to being dropped.

Yeah about 15 games a year. No doubt they are different players and Reillys lack of drive contributed to his axing but Bickley defended Reillys omission by saying everyone had an opponent and Radar wasn't doing his job defensively. There was an article on the AFL website with his comments.

I have more faith in Laird and Brown to get the job done than most others inexperience or not. Our defence is shaping up nicely.

Only one of us is trolling. I was discussing the merits of Brown v Reilly defensive action until some flog derailed the discussion.
No.. you were just attacking Reilly, without addressing Brown at all. Hence my comment about you completely missing the point - as usual.

If you could read I already praised Brown for his one on one work and indicated my confidence in him to get the job done. Happy to explain it twice for you.

Disagree. You were happy with Reillys defensive work this year? Enjoy him one out with Brock McLean?

Ok, to explain it to you - Brown is currently so much weaker at the one-on-one stuff compared to Reilly, let alone the man he replaced in Doughty, that this season Reilly was forced to drop deeper and deeper, which isn't his forte, and robbing us of his attack, which is his forte, contributing to his decline in form, real and perceived.

This season I've not had a lot of confidence in Brown stopping his man one on one, and that's been borne out in the number of times he's been beaten. Laird has provided better stopping power since coming in, which has allowed Henderson off the chain since moving him there.

Who has got away from Brown and kicked a bag on him?

I'm going to understand this to be an admission you haven't watched Brown very closely. Reilly drop back because of Brown's deficiency? Please. We rarely play Reilly on a small anymore because he's crap at it, even more so than Jaensch. And If a loose defender can't drop back to the goal line and remain effective, what is his usefulness to the team? Only Thomas and Garlett (in a game where Reilly's opponent kicked a season high 2) have got the better of Brown.

Brown was flogged up and down 3 weeks in succession by Milne, Ballantyne and Thomas, and only a few very fortunate bounces of the ball prevented Ballantyne from having a 4 goal game.

Brown has done some nice things, but consistently beat his man is not one of them.

Ignorance is not a defence. You clearly haven't watched a game all year.

Milne got 2 goals and 0 goal assists against us, from 11 touches.
