Ryan Gardner is not a key defender. Being quite tall is not an ‘ability’. He cannot take a mark. He cannot spoil a mark. He cannot even let his opponent take a mark because he’s already given away the free kick before the ball has come inside 50.

Makes me sick that we have Wood and Keath stuck playing lock down roles when they are wonderful intercept defenders. Keath in particular must wonder why he’s come here if he’s not allowed to develop in the role where he’s proven himself.

English thrown to the wolves again. Good luck kid. Getting pelted every week will do you the world of good, I’m sure.

What a load of rubbish

Most are generally reasonable about selection on here.

This is clearly an unbalanced team if you understand team structure. Backline might be okay but Wood has to play on one of Himmelberg, Walker or McAsey.

Forward line is ridiculous you don’t take your best and most damaging midfielder and play him forward. We have tried a one tall forward line with Bruce only and it has failed every time to function and guess what? Bont has swung forward those times too and it’s generally at that point the opposition dominate the midfield.

Also Bruce has generally been the chop out in the ruck therefore this week it’s either naughton giving the chop out leaving no tall forwards or a midfielder.

But yeah we should all just come in here and see everything the club does as rainbows and butterflies

You can be a fairly irrational poster at times Doggie 13 so it’s no surprise you’re a little blind to other irrational postings.

Our Def set up is no different to how it’s been prior to last week when Gards came in causing plenty to whinge that we were too tall in defence. Two keys with the possible 3rd. Why are you only now so upset at this setup?

We bat pretty deep in the midfield so considering any 4 of Macrae, Libba, Smith, Lippy, West, Dunkley, McLean and even Wallis can do the job, Bont playing up fwd doesn’t seem such a bad idea. Might be a good thing giving him a spell from midfield minutes in game as opposed to giving him a week off. Would take Bont up fwd over most of our players anyway.

English can ruck one out, he’s done so most of this year. Not too much of a stretch.

Out of curiosity were you calling for Bruce or JJ to be dropped over the last few weeks? How bout Cavarra and West coming in?

Supposed to be perfect conditions tomorrow and we go smaller

Makes sense in Bevos world I guess.

At least if we lose the season is actually over and Bev may give some other kids a crack.

You see a future for Gardner and R.Smith?

Not Roarke. I rated early days but he doesn’t seem to have come on as much as he should have. See how it pans out I guess.

Gardiner could definitely carve out a decent career. We’ll have to wait and see.
He’s had some howlers in his first handful of games, but there’s been plenty of young shit defenders.
Let’s not forget that history is littered with key defenders stinking it up early in their career. Rance and Grimes were absolutely putrid early days and Hamling was that bad he didn’t play a game at Geelong before being delisted. All three have turned out ok.

My guess about Hamling was Scott refused to play him and so list management had no option but to be delisted. I would hope Gardner improves because dogs are pretty bare down back and I think Gardner only plays because he can cover the ground.

My hope is that the 8 day break will be enough for English to recover enough to raise a trot this week. He has looked knackered the last few games.

Lots of analysis of how Adelaide's talls will murder us (they well might) but no discussion of how bringing in extra forwards and mids might help in some way?

Dog help us if any of Naughton, English or Keath get injured early in the game.

I like the Cavarra and West inclusions. People are probably sick of me posting it but I think we need to play smalls who can bring the defensive pressure. With the setup we have been going with with 1 or 2 talls + Lloyd + Dale, I don’t think we’re as effective as keeping it locked in the forward 50 as we could be.

Our midfield should dominate them. They’re slow and small and every team, including us last year, have dominated them. Happy if we keep the setup of last year with Bont, Macrae and Dunkley taking the majority with Libba and Bailey running through as well. We should account for them but English is going to have to compete a lot better than he did last week and hopefully that break gives him a chance to.

Slightly worried about Bont lining up forward. He’s still our best clearance player and best kick coming out of stoppages, and I don’t think he’s a particularly good forward even with improved contested marking. Has been named forward a few times this year and played majority midfield still, so maybe there’s nothing to read into there.

if we look at discussions this year
Trengove sucking lynch green Schache sweet Dickson Gowers and maybe 2 more
That’s 10 players out

irrational other than during an actual game day thread I’m fairly measured with most things I say and generally back up what I say with reasoning whether you agree with the reasoning or not doesn’t make it irrational, so I completely dispute that.

Pretty sure I said the defence could cover for not bringing an extra tall in but Wood has to play tall. Last week I thought we were too tall down back based on the opponent who plays two kpf generally since Martin has been out those two being hipwood and McStay. Based on match ups this weeks back line structure would be better suited to Brisbane and last weeks better suited to this week excluding the personnel in our back 6.

We tried Bont beside Bruce and the forward line has not functioned that well at all, last week was the most efficient we have looked since the north game and in those two games we played 2 genuine kpfs. On top of that naughton is second up from injury and now has to lead the forward line with no genuine kpf support.

English has one out rucked all but one week but Bruce is normally the chop out in there and the weeks we have gone with a single kpf it’s been midfielders and that’s not ideal plus English has looked cooked lately.

No did not call for either of Bruce or JJ to be out. From memory before injuries were announced I believe I called for a single change Lewis young in for Gardner

Some people will just make a call in March and have no willingness to change that call other than to make excuses.

Not having backup for Tim this week is perhaps the worst MC decision made by Bevs Crew ever. The poor kid looked gassed half way through the first last week and as you said had some small help in Bruce. Now he has none, but knowing Bev he will use Dunkley in the front half so that’s Tim great help.

Even without help we have been dominated in taps and anyone suggesting Tim has done it all year as a positive has little idea. We are 5-6 and been smacked in most of our losses and the other teams midfield dominance is the main reason this has occurred.
