Preview Changes vs Carlton

It isn't much different from last year, bar Mundy. That is the main hurt, however we ran riot over them in Melbourne with a similar team. However Barlow is still not back to his best like he was then.

However, it won't be a huge Carlton win. Over reaction is rife on this board, far too much and it starts with you mainly GG.

Look at you big fella, puffing your chest out like you mean business.

Barlow isnt anywhere near what he was, Mundy is a massive difference.

Deboer isnt there to bring the pain, Mcphee is off and we know he gets into Judd and puts him off slightly.

Like I said, it will get ugly through the middle.

Only so much Fyfe can do.

Looks to me like Griffin in for Sandi on the day.

The small forwards give me nightmares.

Agreed. Milne and Schneider ffs! They were the difference Friday night and I hope we can do something about it for the Carlton game

Would not surprise me at all to see Griff in for Sandi - but Sandi has been named on the ground has he not? Or is that only the sub that has to be a player from the bench - rather than late changes?

I hope we win this - need it

Am sure glad we have a game in hand over Essendon

So am I ,after the win straight to the Subi .:thumbsu:

Will be packed no matter who wins as the WA Blues fans seem to hang out there a lot.

On the bit in purple, AFAIK, there are no restrictions on late changes due to injury from anywhere within the 22 - the fines etc arise for late changes from outside the 22 ande emergencies, especially when done for non-injury reasons.

On the small forwards, I'd add that our big problem in the last three games has actually been small marking forwards - we haven't had quite the same problem before, in that we've tended to be beaten by guys when the ball hits the ground. Now, we're being beaten on the ground and in the air by the small guys. Faulks as an in may allow us to better combat the marking - at least make a contest of it. I'd also condier playing him as the sweeper across half back...

They are good, but they shouldn't really be that bad a threat, but without DeBoer/McPhee/Hayden, and with Duffman horribly out of form and Broughts in the midfield, we just don't have the matchups to go with them this time. If we can fill the space in their 50 (easier said than done on Subi) we might have a chance. Might need both Mayne and Pav into the backline for chunks of the game though.

I dont understand people thinking playing Sandilands is a mistake. We don't have much cattle left in the big man department with Griffin still injured. An 85% Sandi is better than a 100% Griffin or any other bloke out there and it is the time of the season when we NEED wins. We can't win 2 and rely on others not winning. We aren't guarenteed of winning against either North or the Dogs anyway, so at the moment it is win at all costs.

I would rest Sandi to make sure he is 100% for pre-season. It's a bit defeatist I know, but lets face it I don't think we will threaten much in the 8 this year. I would like the guys to get a but more finals experience and then smash it next year

The inside 50's are the problem. We have done well to be in some games considering the difference in that department and that's testament to our defensive back six. The midfield is where we need to tighten up and not allow those easy spot up kicks into the forward line. I'd almost prefer us to hold onto the ball more and chip it around.

Stop the inside 50's and their small forwards can't do jackshit.

Hope to hell we kick it to the goal square and not 40m out from goal where Carlton will just rebound it and down back the other end.

Cmon the Dockers;) Harvey might play Sandi forward to stretch Carlton's defense. Their defense is not good at all. Lynch ran riot at Etihad and they crumble under pressure, quite young and Jamison still isn't there.

Harvey has been an imbecile in not playing Pav forward more in the last few weeks. He could kick 6 if Sandi and him are down there. On the flip side Carlton have a strong midfield and if you guys break even in the clearances you will win. Crowley is obviously in for Judd, Mzungu would be killed but him. He seem more suited to being a run with player than someone who stops inside mids eg: Embley and Dal Santo. Betts, Garlett and Walker are huge downhill skiers. When the heats on, they are no where to be seen. Not even in the same class as Milne. Ballantyne needs a big game, hasn't done much lately.

Best of luck but only for this week;)

Looks like someone who has seen Carlton play once this year - and poorly. I think you can safely ignore what this knob has to say.

Without wanting to labour the point, Henderson down back has been a revelation in the absence of Jamison, and it's pretty hard to stake a claim to Betts, Garlett and Walker being downhill skiers when all three are in the top 10 AFL goal kickers.

Anyway, moving on from this very limited assessment...

This will be a very good contest - fast and skilful on a big ground.

Carlton's backline is solid but a bit on the slow side (presumably that's why Armfield is back). I think Freo can exploit this, but it's got more to do with movement than height. Yarran could do some serious damage at Subi and set a record for bounces - presumably Freo will tag him but he's getting better at playing with tags. A Ballantyne/Yarran match up would be fascinating. Not sure we'd do this, Armfield may be more likely to go to him.

Carlton's forward line is now multidimensional. I think at Subi we'll be playing on at all costs to get the ball down to those three. Kreuzer will spend a lot of time forward because we are trying to look after him following his knee surgery, and I think that's what you'll be trying to exploit by playing Sandi.

The midfield is where this game will be won and lost. Sandi, if he plays, will have a significant impact. I recall him coming back from an absence against Carlton in Queensland to win the game. Our ruck stocks are better, but there remains some serious doubt about Warnock's form against quality ruckmen (he tends to beat up on young, ordinary ruckman). This is a big test for him.
We should have the edge on midfield depth and rotations, especially given some of your injuries.

A close game I'd think.

Seriously? The only thing I can think of is that Harvey is giving him a chance to redeem himself and all his teammates were aware of his dismal input against the Saints.

I saw him at the Auskick clinic on the saturday after the game, of all the players participating in drills with kids and doing it for well over an hour, there's Hinkley just strolling around not doing much of anything with a mirror in hand.

Your support of Hinkley must surely be tongue-in-cheek now Chris?

One can only think we are rolling the dice and hoping a giant forward line can create mismatches in the air. On paper, I'm not sure I like the balance of our side. Four tall defenders? Seems almost certain that McPharlin and/or Silvagni will play forward, especially with Kepler omitted.

Our team looks very top heavy, I count the talls ratio as 8:5 in our favour (including Laidler and Grover, who aren't really that tall). And on top of this, we look quite slow when you think of guys like Pearce, Suban, Barlow, Broughton, Crowley, Lower. I think Carlton's midfield is going to have a field day and will run us off our legs.

I could see this going two ways ... a tall forward line winning us the game as a masterstroke, or the lack of running players backfiring spectacularly and we get absolutely murdered. Sadly, I think the latter is more likely.

Surely griffo is gunna play.....couple of factors could make us super competitive, having an 8 day break, season is gone for good this time if we lose.we can only hope the players attack the game like they seem to for a derby.
