Everyone needs to temper their expectations that changes are going to make any difference this week.
It’s a good Saturday for other activities liking rooting or fishing. I can’t root for 3 hours so I’ll probably go fishing.

As for swinging changes here is who is not available and weeks away

Ryan 8
Yeo 8
Shuey 10
Petrucelle 2-3
Hurn 1-2
Cole 1-2
Venables TBA
Williams -test match fitness
Hutchings - na just played half a game needs 2 or 3 weeks est
Cameron - TBA (bloody need him NOW)
Rioli - Aug 23ish

11 players. Expectations should be tempered. :drunk: :$

But these are the interesting games. Its will be a challenge and worth watching. Far more interesting to watch than beating a half cooked Collingwood at home

Agree. That Pies game ment nothing other than 4 points.

The game in Geelong will tell us something about the squad. We still have the talent to win this game but do we have the mindset?

Vardy is a ruck / forward remember. But we just dont need the forward minutes from him with JK, Darling and Oscar......plus Waterman, Brander.......

If JK is rested with that ankle Vardy gets more forward minutes, at a ground he played and trained at for years.
The other option is Harry. Cats will play Hawkins and Cameron so Harry as a rotation back and rucking is also a distinct possiblitity.

JK out Harry in.

If we want go smaller (which Ive been hoping for)

JK, Vardy out Harry and J Jones in.

Foley covers Cole (inj)
Yeah that’s most of the issue for me. Vardy doesn’t have a place up forward so whilst picking him as our next best available ruck makes a fair amount of sense, I just think his position is wasted unless he’s getting good minutes up forward. If he was a backman I’d be all for him playing. It’s not an issue with him as a player necessarily, its more that he doesn’t have a role outside of making sure Nic gets through a game, albeit that’s a very important task.

Picking the “second ruck” from another position gives us that flexibility. Whether it’s Ah Chee, Waterman, Brander, Edwards. They’d be more than capable against an opposing second ruck (if we played Richmond for instance they’d be rucking against Pickett and likely winning all the hitouts anyway).

I just don’t like the idea of shoehorning someone in just because they’re the next best ruckman. Could work this week if JK is rested (may still not be needed given its Geelong), but long term I don’t really want him playing unless one of our tall forwards are out.

Forecast in Geelong is for rain, so that might mean we leave out Vardy as well as Kennedy.

The forecast for Geelong is drug use, domestic violence and rain. Pretty much 365 days of the year. Even Bunbury, Kwinana/Rockingham and Geraldton at least a chance of rain 365 days of the year isn't a problem.

We need to go in assuming it's a wet shithole and a weird shape. The only possible change is it may not be wet.

If we go shorter anticipating a wet and windy match, perfect time to debut one of the new mids, Ledwards or Trew.

We need someone new for the old Brander role: stringing together losses in difficult away games. If they debut now, they'll have enough experience to lose against Giants and Swans away too.

Really like the Waterman as backup ruck idea - would offer something similar to how Oscar played in there and Oscar needs to be staying forward from now on.

Keeps Snake in the side (we struggle to find a role for him at times but he's too good not to play) and probably wouldn't change his role outside stoppages that much, he already sort of roams around the ground keeping involved without being fixed in a position, like one of the high disposal rucks like Goldstein.

Keeping Waterman's output he's already giving already whilst freeing up an entire player slot, dropping a bit of effectiveness in the ruck and gaining a bit of effectiveness on the ground at stoppages seems like a no-brainer to me.

Won't happen though, we're always super settled on our Plan A and Jake wasn't trained as a ruck in preseason so can't see us pulling a tactical role change mid season. Richmond would pull the trigger IMO.

You serious about waterman? He started to look the real deal.
I think he is the real deal. Looks like a good long term player.

Best role seems to be third tall. Problem is right now he is 4th or 5th or 6th tall.
When we play JK, Darling and Allen as our 3 talls, plus Brander (who's starting to put it together. Maybe become a permanent mid, which would help), plus 2 x rucks he would be playing as 6th tall, even with only one ruck on the ground.

He's a potentially really good player who unbalances the side. It would be nice if he could act as the body in ruck contests for a part of the game. That would help keep Allen out of the ruck, make Vardy redundant and allow us to bring in a small mid like Trew or one of the others.
