The sad thing about Boyce is he is so out of touch with the game, and it reflects on his club. Shouldn't the committee of the club get together and ask him to move on? Maybe stick to running the tuck shop or something?

he is the club, pres, treasurer, secretary, tuck shop lady, 2nds umpire, 1st's umpire escort....
His heart is in the right place, they should just refrain him from umpiring anymore. Without guys like him, footy clubs probably would not survive.

Bob - Please enlighten us with how he is out of touch with the game - Current Rego Secretary [in touch] Treasurer [sound position - in touch] Liason person to the Melb City Council [this is why our club has the biggest rooms - in touch] Tribunal Panel Member [in touch] Somewhere near 235 games [a while a go no doubt] but wait for it Level 2 Accredited Coach [Just might be a little more in touch than you & your entire club]

Tell us what you to assist your club Bike?? I challenge you to back up your statement!

Puff :p

Correct, you may be more emphatic Bro. Actually, he is the picture you get when you wiki "stalwart"! The VAFA admin/old-boys network regard Boycey and his kind vexatious litigants when they approach HO with some grievance, but without him and his kind....our section probably wouldn't get a mention in the weekly record. Oh, seems we did this week. he he

Not saying people like that aren't important in behind the scenes rolls, i'm just saying he is out of touch. As i said, leave him in the tuckshop, let him count the beans, pump up the balls, write letters to the VAFA, book the club rooms, whatever - but dont kid the league by pretending he is an unbiased umpire, or even a good biased umpire at that. May have been a champion in his time, club hero, whatever, i dont actually care - each club has them and each club loves them, but it doesn't mean he cant lose it. (Went on to typed a lot more here but deleted it as this has been given to much attention already). Nuff said.

So your problem is with his umpiring not that he is out of touch? Have you seem any of our games this year where he or either of the other 2 umpired??

The sooner the Ammo's send the reserve umpires to neutral games the better off everyone will be. I believe they do it in A & B grades.
We all must remember that these guys give up most of their Saturday's to help out our clubs and most do it for nothing. I wouldn't think these guys would deliberately adjudicate decisions in favour of their sides.
You only have to look at the umpiring in seniors to understand that umpires (with no affiliation) get caught up in the situation and make decisions purely because they feel aggrieved by one team.
If we cannot get the semi-professional umpires (as they actually get paid to do it) to make decisions on purely what they see and not be influenced by external factors, then how can we expect the club appointed ones be any better.
From what I have seen this year, ALL reserve grade umpires have been on the same level - none better, none worse than any other.
And lets face, everyone thinks the oppositions umpire is terrible - its not a new concept - its been the perception for the last 50 years and it will be the same for the next 50....

Round 17 Preview

Bentleigh over the Hawks by 41 points (Hawthorn are playing their best footy for the year, however so too are the Demons, so this away fixture could not be more untimely. Chris Fedderson to be in the thick of it for the home side)
SMS over Wicks by 15 Pts (Match of the round for me. Elsternwick will try every trick in the book to hold on to 4th spot, but in the end they will hoping the Piranhas have caused an upset in Doveton)
Westies over UHS-VU by 11 Pts (Mathematically the loser is out of contention in this elimination derby. Should be a rugged affair but feel the Magpies will protect their home patch just a little better than Nikko's mob. Mark Macgugan to be amongst it for West).
SFX over Monash by 32 Pts (It's been a case of no Graham Strain, no Monash for much of the season and if he fails to come up for this one, then its curtains for the Gryphs. Monash will display much of their renowned fighting spirit, but feel they will be simply outclassed by the boys from Casey).
Joc's over House by 51 Pts (Can't see Powerhouse getting anywhere near St Johns in this one as the home side has far too much to play for and the Piranhas form has been most ordinary of late. Kane Arnold to fire for the Joc's).

Round 17 Review:

4/5 (66/85 Cumulative)

Has there ever been a section as exciting as ours in Amateur History. Clearly yes, however, we are undoubtedly the most intriguing grade of 2009! We are no closer to deciding the constitution of the Final Four or relegation battle and now SFX have a real sniff at the Double Chance. Speaking of SFX, their form is very encouraging and they are playing their best footy at the right end of the season. The Wicks continue to baffle punters. They have lost games where they should've won and then they go out and crush SMS. There is no doubting their ability, it just depends which Elsternwick fronts up in the Elimination Final (should they make it). Bentleigh continue to impress. No Chris Sharp and yet they still kick 20 plus goals, however, finals footy is a W.N.B.G (Whole new ball game). The Hawks, Vultures and Westies are safe, but cannot play finals so their games mean little (except for club pride) in the scheme of things. A 98 point differential separates The Piranhas from the Gryphons so Monash are well aware that a win is the only plausible escape. The Joc's vs. Wicks final four battle is more intriguing though. A 43 point differential separates the 2 sides so if the Wicks were to beat SFX in a close one, the Joc's still could pass them if they thump the Gryphons. Both sides know well that a win is required to play finals.

Confused?? On to the selections

Round 18 Preview

SMS over UHS- VU by 15 Pts (St Mary's/Salesian know quite well that a loss will demote them to an elimination final so don't expect them to take this game lightly. Whilst Uni High have been competitive for much of the season, I feel that the class of SMS will be telling in second half).
Joc's over Monash by 8 pts (It has been 11 years since the Gryphs last played the equivalent of D4 football, however despite their fighting qualities they meet a St John’s side 'hell-bent' on playing finals football. This has hallmarks of a classic and I expect a fiery and passionate affair, but class normally wins in the end and the Gryphons simply don't have enough of it. Joc's just).
SFX over Wicks by 11 Pts (Speaking of classic encounters, this fixture at EP #2 also has the fans salivating. I've selected the Wicks incorrectly on countless occasions, so they will probably win, but the simple fact is that SFX are a quality side who rested many players last week, yet still won easily. I expect Elsternwick to jump their opponents but be gradually worn down as the day progresses and fall agonisingly short of finals. Sorry Sidey!).
Hawks over Westies by 16 Pts (The only fixture of no bearing is at Rathmines and expect the home side to win by virtue of being the home side. Both teams should be congratulated for avoiding relegation with relative ease (in the end) after belated beginnings).
Bentleigh over The House by 55 Pts (Even though the Piranhas are the only side to have knocked off the Demons in 09', don't expect a repeat. Powerhouse have arguably been the weakest team in the comp throughout the second half of the year and would be relegated save for a 12 team comp in 2010. The stalwarts at Ross Gregory will be checking the live score updates on the web from ECR to make sure the Gryphons don't pull off any final game heroics).

Good luck to all

Quasi

From a grade a bit higher - one of the most sensible comments of the year - absolutely the same in D1!
Well said

ok already.. lets all move on!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and tip the Gryph's to knock over St Johns. For some reason when it comes down to relegation games in D3 they seem to dig themselves out of the whole. 8points.

hey guys... is their any one on here that supports elsternwick or SFX and is willing to hand over their number so that we can work out if the wicks or JOCS make it into the 4... cos i'll be down at the JOCS game hping we get in and hoping like hell SFX get over the line... cheers dyl

Re: D3 2009

The House knocked off Bentleigh in the 1s and the 2s - it's going to be a big night at the House B&F tonight!!!

Hawks were disgraceful - should be in D4...
They should be in their own division: COULDABEENCHAMPIONS, Div.2..

Ooh! Aren't Bentleigh just the House's bitch???
Twice this season!
Tank.......Bentleigh like the bridesmaid dress too much, methinks. Who wants the brides dress? SFX. SMS, ELS??? Anyones guess!
Seriously, going down to a competitive side early in the season is no disgrace, but dropping a game to a relegation contender in the last round says you demons are...............MARSHMALOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Get ya ya ya's out... finals time.. 10 years in the VAFA and not even a ressies pennant!
Pathetic.
C'mon you Bentleigh champions, explain this you drunken hillside w***ers!!!

So the end of the regular season has come. Having been to all 10 D3 grounds this year I thought I would have a go at ranking them. Just my thoughts and would be interested in seeing what others think.

1). Bentleigh
2). UHS
3). Monash Gryphons
4). St Johns
5). West Brunswick
6). St Francis X
7). Hawthorn
8). Powerhouse
9). SMS
10). Elsternwick

Please note that 2 of the grounds I didn't play on, just watched and that the grounds would change depending on the time of year we played there.

If you are keen to give me 6/4 for a Bentleigh premiership, I will happily make a sizeable wager Sidey.

Wow another Melbourne supporter on here Arch Stanton! that makes 5 I think.

Anyway you're your summation of the grounds is pretty well spot on. However I think if Bentleigh didn't get their ground re-sewn last year, I think they'd be about 5th or 6th on you're list.

But you can't blame the clubs for the state of their grounds but rather the councils in which they lie. It always astounds me that grounds in better socio-economical areas have had little or nothing done to them by the situating council.

No comment on the Bentleigh 1s and 2s capitulation Sniper????
