Essendon vow enough is enough

I must say, it's only a praccy match, but saw some decent signs from the Bombers.

Precision kicking tore us up a bit in the first half from them, and they had a physical edge they haven't had in God knows how long.

Who knows if it actually eventuates into anything good, but I wouldn't be ripping into them yet. They look like they're on the right path.
The first half was the best I've seen us in a long time. we pressured you guys into rushing the ball and in turn creating turn overs havent see us do that in like for ever.

We looked structured, composed and had some mongrel.

Seem to be on the right path hopefully it continues.

Only pies blues tigers and freo have ave 40k+ consecutively in 22 and 23.
The highest attendance between freo and bombers is a freo home game.
Bombers is a big club but they’ve definitely dropped off.
To an extent. Fact is, ‘basement’ Essendon home crowds have exceeded ‘basement’ Carlton crowds the last decade. Its home averages at Msrvel, considering on field fortunes have been admirable.

Poor on field years hurt crowds. Excluding those really dark years overshadowed by the saga (2015/6), Essendon’s home crowds compare favourably with almost any team in Victoria, certainly compared favourably in its down years to every team excluding Collingwood. Even Collingwood have often pulled <30k at MCG home games in its barren years.

When Essendon get going infield, its membership and attendances will be at the level of Collingwood (membership) and only playing several home games at Marvel results in it always recording a lower attendance aggregate for a H&A season.

They will get there. It might be 2025 but once they get the extra 20-30 games playing together to build necessary cohesion as well as higher fitness levels they will then go to a new level. In meantime, it’s going to be up and down this year.

Unless its against a top side no more 10 goal loses

I wouldn't read too much into the practice match either way. Looked good at times.

But Essendon played their best mids for most of the game. Their top 4 mids (Merrett, Parish, Setterfield and Durham) had 69 of a possible 75 centre bounce attendances. Caldwell had the other 6. I'd think if Shiel and Hobbs miss round 1 that's basically their starting midfield.

Dangerfield, Blicavs, Atkins and Bowes would be my choice of starting 4 centre square mids for round 1. They only had 26 attendances between them. Atkins and Bowes only played a half each. Instead Jhye Clark and Tanner Bruhn were the 2 mids in there the most and I think they would be well down the rotation come round 1 and that's if Clark is even picked.

Merrett spent a fair bit of time at half back. And Durham has been a winger for the majority of his time at Essendon, so I wouldn't call him one of our best mids yet either. But I do get your point. Geelong also had a lot more rotations than us so it wasn't a surprise we tired more towards the end.

With Dangerfield nearly 34 and Blicavs nearly 33, I don't think you can rely on them for too much longer.

Vic country boy Hobbs will be star by years end.

Has no fear. A brutal competitor.

We also had considerably less interchanges than Geelong did. So naturally we were a lot more gassed in the 4th. I read somewhere they had 30 or so more interchanges than us.

I wouldn't read into it at all.

The biggest issue though i think is how important Ridley is to our defence, as soon as he came off with a Quad our backline looked in shambles. Same thing last year when he was injured.

Not just a country boy, but a Wimmera boy … Essendon’s old and very lucrative zone from last century, producing the likes of Tim Watson (tough enough to debut at age 15), Merve Neagle, Roger Merrett and (of course) Shane Heard amongst a host of others … you get my drift.
