Opinion Former Richmond players that could of been stars but didn't quite get there

Richard Tamblingā€¦ wrong club at the wrong time šŸ˜Ÿ
yep wallet was selfish, and flogged him, lids was ready from day 1 but richie wasnt with such different upbringings, wallet had a point to prove and played the kid too much, too early and when he was sore and worn out from injury, lack of confidence and being a very young father with not a great support network.

if he went at 14 instead of 4 and ended up on the eagles list, he may have been a star, rather than a good but maligned 100+ player

If we are talking yesteryear and players that were cruelled by injury but looked like they could have been so much more, I instantly think of Alan Edwards, Bruce Tempany and Micheal Mitchell. Mitchell got both mark and goal of the year in 1990, Edwards was the heartthrob of every female teenage Richmond supporter and Tempany was a very highly thought of player at the time with his pace, height and skill.

However if we are just talking about players that just surprisingly didn't make more of a mark, Trent Nicholls, Stephen James and Andrew Raines come to mind who all showed great promise in their first year or two but then kind of just faded away.

Tambling and Fiora, they both had decent enough careers but nowhere near what they should have been.
I had Alan Edwards no 17 on my jumper post Barry Richardson, footy lost its innocence when coll poached him, I was like a kid whoā€™s double scoop ice cream dropped on the pavement as soon as it was handed to me

Thought that Stephen Ryan was gonna be some player, same with Justin Pickering , very few of our players kept developing in the 80s , tis whenever some boofhead mentions 80s footy I says stick it where the sun donā€™t shine , terrible times for the y&b post 82
Yes. Also thought kids like Craig Smith and Chris Pym were going to make it. Pym was front and centre of one of our rare moments of joy in 1988 when as reigning spooners we beat the reigning premiers Cartlon at the MCG on a wet Friday night by 17 points (?). Celebrated like a flag!!

But that era brings me nightmares of watching John Manton, Michael Laffy, Athos Hyrsoulakis..... Stop! Stop! No more!!

Some huge talent and sad tales mentioned already, but surprised nobody's mentioned one of the most talented and the saddest stories of them all yet:

Much like Cogs, gave us a brief glimpse of exactly what we most desperately needed, then was lost to us. :(

Showing your age there mate. Agree with all three. From memory Tempany retired due to asthma?? Edwards could have been anything before injury.... and going to the Woods.

One of the unluckiest blokes in footy, Tempany.
Missed the 80 flag with an Achilles and then got hurty early in the 82 grand final, which stuffed us.
I remember reading, or it may have been the Flea, who told me, that Bruce was earmarked for any one of five different roles in the grand final on various Carlton players. Him going off robbed us off of nearly all our versatility that day and unable to shut down one of a bunch of the Blues' prime movers.
We had an awfully top-heavy side for a day like that .. the General Lee, Dunne, Roachy, 'Big Al' Martello, Strachan.
Also had Landy and Keane in the backline, who while both close-checking, skilful and good footballers, neither was exactly speedy.

All excellent nominations. Especially the call in regards to Peter Lane, how he never made a mark in senior football is staggering. However this was an era that Richmond had an embarrassment of riches in young key forwards (kind of like the polar opposite to now). We had Roach, Cloke, Brian Taylor, Mark Jackson and Peter Lane in short order. Clubs at the time or at the very least Richmond appeared far less inclined to play players out of position. For whilst Roach was moved up the field to great effect, and Cloke became an excellent ruckman that was later on in their careers. So Taylor and Jackson left for more opportunity and Lane just fell by the wayside.

And regarding Dan Foley, his five goals still exist on youtube. One player that seems to be called a lot in that clip that had all the talent in the world but I think injury held him back was Philip Egan. A fit Egan could do it all.

Phil Egan was a beauty ... fabulous player on his day.
I recall a four or five-week period in '87 when we started him and the Ghost in the goal square up forward and they tore it up.
It was vintage Ghost and Egan was slaying them.
As I recall, probably Jimmy, injured his back, landing awkwardly after taking a great mark and the tandem never again operated out of the square again.
Was lucky to get to know Phil Egan a few years ago and every so often socialised with him.
A wonderful bloke and one who has made a big difference to a lot of people in the indigenous community in northern Victoria and southern NSW.

Why did tempany retire at 25

David Simpson and Darren Keighranā€¦ two ex-Tigers that I know pretty well.

Why did tempany retire at 25

Touched on before by Grrr - asthma and controlling was a major contributor to his decision.
It was chronic.
And I think his body in general was starting to let him down.
Continuing the 'unlucky' theme, he actually missed playing in the 1977 reserves premiership with a broken collarbone.
The guy was seriously cursed.

Simpson did a knee in his first game didnā€™t he
Second, he was good mates with Terry Smith, Jimmy Jess and the Flea.
Played cricket with him for a number of yearsā€¦ good bat.

After the listening to the Tigercast the other night, they raised a good topic of players who could of been anything but didn't quite get there for one reason or another. Marty Mcgrath is one for me. Kicked 5 goals on debut and then was delisted at the end of the year.

Justin Murphy also kicked 5 on debut and then got traded. I just looked up his wiki, been a naughty boy post-football ******* with drugs and spent time in the slammer for burning his exes finger off with a blowtorch. ******* hell!
