Keep
Fergus Greene
Jarman Impey
Finn Maginness
James Blanck
Ned Long

Keep or trade
Tyler Brockman
James Worpel
Max Lynch

Unsure
Chad Wingard

At Risk
Emerson Jeka
Jacob Koschitzke
Seamus Mitchell
Jai Serong
Lachie Bramble
Josh Morris

Injury issues from Jeka, Morris, Serong and previously Mitchell put them at risk. Really happy with Mitchell's debut hopefully he can put his best foot forward from here. Really hope Morris and Jeka get a chance as well but will need to wait and see.

Why Finn is a chance to make it….

As I stumbled my way out of Norwood FC (pockets a lot lighter after spending a fortune on drinks haha) and made the trek back to my Hotel I ran into Finn and Will both pounding the pavement around the streets.

What got me is that both had a serious sweat up and had been working hard.

Would love to know if this was part of a fitness schedule they had to complete or both were just doing the extra miles.
The problem for Finn is how many negating mids with weak disposal do we keep on the list? He is up against Nash and Long. 1 of the 3 would be battling to stay on the list post this season. Currently Nash is clearly the best of the 3.

Yeh I think we have too many negating inside mids also. If we had a depth chart we would be stacked for the one-dimensional, physical and fit mids. Nash atm has the most strings to his bow and runs on the board.

Long really needs to become a lead-up marking threat. I think a role similar to Tom Lynch of Adelaide ilk is his best chance to make it as a league footballer.

The thing that still baffles me around Finn, every person in Australia knew he wasn’t a great kick in his junior footy.

This is why I believe he will stay long term. Sam Mitchell will see and hope he becomes another version of Brad Sewell long term.

Is Nash already the best version we could hope for Finn?

I sort of felt the game Nash played on the weekend is going to put real pressure on Finn moving forward.

From what I've seen, I haven't seen Finn as a strong clearance player at all, and his running power is never going to be used to generate attacking plays. Like Weddle's may be.

I think Finn's role is purely as a tagger, so it largely comes down to is this something Sam wants long term. Every chance it is.

Not sure about Blanck. Can’t see him being on an AFL list in 2 years.

Brockman needs a 2 or 3 year deal

I am not so quick to write off Blanck. I agree his senior performances in 2023 have been poor, playing in a backline under siege. The Sydney game was a nightmare. But he was good last year. To be honest he has shown more than DGB when playing seniors. Doesn't mean he's the better prospect but just as we aren't writing DGB off for some rough edges, I think we need to persevere with Blanck for a while yet. I don't think he's ever going to be a star, but I reckon he can make it as an AFL level key defender.

The guys in the gun for me are Kosi, Maginness, Serong, Bramble, Jeka, Morris, Long, Mitchell.

In the gun doesn't mean they will be delisted, just that the remainder of this season is important for them as our delistings will probably include 5-6 of them. We are clearly going to give each an opportunity in the seniors to show whether they are up to it. Given we are likely to finish bottom 16-18 on the ladder, there are a number of guys on the list who just aren't going to make it, so you'd have to think there will be a fair number of changes.

These 4 plus Wingard i think

I think he will be traded not delisted. We won’t get much for him. His value is going backwards fast. We needed to push him a couple years back when there was demand for him, but didn’t
Pretty sure we did push him but unlike the NBA, players can refuse trades which sucks.

That’s a bigger list than I expected. Most moved linked to rebalancing out where we are stacked for certain positions. A lot to play out over rest of season.

Forwards:
-Chad - gone
-Greene - expect will extend
-Serong - has talent, would be surprised if didn’t get another year
-Kosi - at risk. Can’t get a game in a side playing no KPFs
-brockman - keep (unless requests a trade)

Mids
-Long - more likely as a hff. Will be given a chance this year. If can show signs up forward expect will get one more but not convinced he’ll make it as a mid (have better prospects - drafting Hurstwaite hurts him + invested in stephens)
-worpel - tough one. Need to see how rest of season plays out. I don’t think they’d be much trade interest + is playing well - but is he in long term plans? Might get another as younger mids probably not ready yet. May depend on if stephens can go past him
-Finn - at risk. Nash’s form hurts him.

Backs
-blanck - not convinced he’ll make it but we will persist given our lack of options
-jeka - at risk, but possibly kept as depth as can play fwd/back. Keeps getting injured at bad times
-impey - if we could move on worpel why not impey - we have a few coming through in his position. But expect will get another year. One of few players we could trade out and cover (particularly if seamus and morris looking good)
-bramble - at risk. Needs to show more
-seamus - a good debut, but will need to do more. We can’t carry so many hbfs on list.
-morris - at risk. Needs to get into seniors
-O’hara - cat b I think?

Ruck
-lynch - may want to leave for opportunity but we need him as depth.

Others - can’t really think of anyone who’s contracted who we would consider for a trade.

Would the club consider offers for CJ and potentially cash in on a high draft pick?
Risk and reward. Better players than him were traded in our previous rebuild. Same goes for Hardwick. It’s an area of the ground that we have enough talent moving forward.

Sure it’s not a popular view, but if we want to get high quality picks to get some KP types, this is the year to do it.

If Seamus holds his spot and Morris performs well at Box Hill think CJ will really start to feel the pressure.

If as a club we believe we can cover CJ’s output with players like Seamus, Morris, BMac etc I would consider offloading him for the right price. What would we expect for him though?

Would be a shame in many ways though as he seems like a much loved character and his story is pretty inspirational

And at his best Jiath's a real game changer; the kind you'd want to hold on to rather than trade out. He showed dramatic improvement a year or two ago. I tend to think it's a two steps forward one step back scenario - all part of his development. These first few rounds are not indicative of where he ends up as a player is my feeling.

Minor pruning to the list not major culling like the last 2 years. A lot of young talent finding their way that need time to develop. We don’t have a great hand at this years draft other than the obvious top 2 or 3 pick. I think we have the Bulldogs 2nd and 3rd rounders not our own? Clearly we need another key forward to help Mitch Lewis. I hope we avoid the wooden spoon and grab Curtin or Archer Reid to be honest.

Breust is contracted until the end of next year, and that's when he will finish.

It's not even a discussion point.
Contracts count for nothing. If Sammy tells him he can play out his contract with BH, look at his options elsewhere or retire with a well-paid assistant position, he might decide to retire. I'm not saying it will happen. His form could improve and he could be jumping out of his skin at season's end but it is certainly a discussion point.

I know Morris has been around for a few years and we are not short of back pocket - half-back flanker types. However, I like what I have seen from his limited opportunities and have him as a keeper.

Breust is our leading goal kicker....

Not sure what the BH call is about

For who certainly not the coaching staff. I think you have looked at his age rather than his output.

No, it isn't.

He's a Hawk champion, and he will play out his contract, and moving him early won't even be mentioned or even thought by anyone at the club.

His form and position still warrants a spot, and until such time as it doesn't, he will play. He is best 22 still. 8 goals from very limited opportunities, and a bad cork early in this game, and out come the 'get rid of Breust' brigade one more time. ****, it annoys me how much he is disrespected here.

Perhaps next year, he may have some time in the twos, who knows, but absolutely no one at the club will be trying to push him out, regardless of what you say.
