How do Victorians feel when an interstate team wins the Premiership?

I like the random subjective theory for explaining sporting loyalties:

Spent several years down moorabbin way rubbing shoulders with the ugg boot singlet mob. The culturelessness and classlessness of them made me rejoice with each spoon and loss. That was me under the members stand every second week laughing and taking the piss, occassionally having my glasses but never my scorn broken. That was a while ago though and having removed myself from that bleak suburban wasteland, i quite like the saints these days though i can still identify the odd ugg boot remnant on BF.

Teresa, ended up marrying someone else, also a collingwood fan, and having to watch them together weekly giggling and rubbing each others buttocks gave me black and white nightmares. Strangely my hatred of the pies dissipated when they divorced, my malevolent self went as far as witnessing one of the docs. I loved the pies with great affection and gusto for nearly a year until this north supporter, Glenn, with a lisp and crucially, an alfa romeo, came on the scene. Im over it now and have been since Glenn wrote his alfa off and suffered serious financial woes. I am a forgiving soul it turns out.

More recently as the years accumulate and youthful attitudes fade i find my provincialism gone and neither like nor hate any club. If RFC fail to win a flag let it be a club that has been years without success.

The exception of course is Mary and her Hawks. If Mary ever deigns to notice and respond to my daily forays into her office, i may find myself cheering them on with the same verve and energy with which i once got behind Teresa and the Pies.

As someone who now lives in Brisbane it depresses me.

It reinforces how little popular support there is for manufactured franchises. It also diminishes the competition as a whole in the eyes of people who follow other sports as they see it as a manufactured result. The patriotic bandwagoners love it but they jump off quicker than they jump on.

Manufactured success in Sydney & Brisbane hasn't helped the competition at all.

Nope because I'd rather the premiership somewhere else rather than our rivals talking crap all year

Living in SA the last thing I want is the two SA sides being successful either. The media wankfest over here is unbearable.
Give me a Sydney or Brissie winner anyday

When I was a kid and an interstate team won I was just bored, especially during Brisbane's 3 peat, I stopped watching the sport for a little while when it was all Brisbane and Port. Now as an adult I don't particularly care, I actually went for Sydney vs the Dogs because I thought getting more frees than the opponent every single game was just a bit ridiculous when they throw all the time. Like I said though I don't particularly care, if it's not Hawthorn I'm not super interested.

was happy for brisbane and sydney winning the flag stopped essendon/collingwood and hawthorn from winning. at the end of the day i just want a good game and for none of collingwood/essendon/carlton to win the flag

Same as any other team winning it. Loved the run of non Vic grand finals in the mid noughties.

GWS in the next couple of years could potentially be different, i feel the other sides kind of did their time a bit, built a supporter base, recent history etc. Their fans brought some atmosphere to the G. Not quite sure if GWS are quite there yet.

I would have been annoyed if another expansion team won one before I saw the Dogs win a flag, and to a lesser extent the Saints. Now I really couldn't care less, if it's not us.

Why do non-Vics think we are all anti-interstate and hate every single team and player from outside our state, and why do said non-Vics see interstate premierships as a big f*** you to Victoria? None of us give a * about any team unless it's our own.

Reading this thread seems to reinforce that opinion as pretty much right

I've wondered how Victorians felt when Sydney or Brisbane win premierships. A lot of Canadians don't like it when a team from southern United States wins the Stanley Cup, because ice hockey is not very popular down there. Do Victorians feel something similar?

How did the Americans feel when the Blue Jays won the World Series in the early 90s?
Or when the Raptors do well in the NBA?

I think because the AFL is now 40% outside of Victoria, Victorians are used to it.

I think Rugby were a bit more upset when the Melbourne side was launched in 1998 and won the cup in their 2nd year.

The thing that has irritated me over the years is the media narrative of "Oh, get behind the Victorian team!".

As though people should be obligated to get behind a team just because they're Victorian.

For example when Sydney and West Coast played in those Grand Finals there was a huge narrative of "Get behind old South Melbourne/Bloods etc". I supported West Coast in those games - nothing to do with disliking the Swans, just preferred the West Coast team to win as they were a more attacking and exciting team than the Swans at the time. Couldn't have cared less that Sydney/South Melbourne have Victorian heritage or that they are an older club than the Eagles.

If people want to support a neutral team because they like them or they haven't won a GF for a long time or for whatever reason I don't have a problem with it, but supporting them just because they're from the same state? Lame.
