How has Collingwood managed to be so successful since 2001 while Carlton and Essendon have not?

Carlton has never seen success in their club's history when on an even playing field. One single AFL era flag that was won through hardcore cheating of the salary cap. Every state league flag before that was won also through cheating of the salary cap, or during an era of nonexistent equalization measures. People talk a lot of s**t about relocating North, but at least North has genuinely achieved something to be proud of. Carlton's only advantage over them is a larger supporter base, and that's literally it.

Collingwood shouldn't have their name tarnished by being spoken of alongside Carlton.

I would hardly say Collingwood has been so successful?

Geelong Richmond and Hawthorn all have more flags in that time and both Geelong and Richmond are in general better run clubs over the last decade.

All it takes is get a good President to recruit a good CEO who recruits a good coach that then sets up a good football department who recruit good players, establish a good culture of success, get a bit of luck as well and away you go...Too easy.
Need to read the OP again, eg "always seem to be challenging, albeit still losing most GFs", unlike Richmond who disappeared for 35 years, we're always up there. While Carlton and Essendon are not.

Always up there? You finished 17th two year ago. There are certain teams who have never finished as low as 17th in their entire history. ;)

I thought it was Gluton Free? I was wondering why the waiter gave me a funny look when I said I didn’t want a grand final with my pasta the other week

I am pleased to clear that up for you. We forget sometimes how fortunate we are as Richmond supporters to understand winning Grand Finals the way we do. Happy to reveal more if you have any further things about Grand Final victories you would like explained. ;)

I do actually. How come you didnt win any for 37 years if you are the gurus of all things flag?

To those saying Collingwood has only won 1 since 2001, they've contended in 5, a few other prelims, play finals more often that not, they're around the mark, I'd say that's successful. They weren't that far away from winning 4 in the AFL era. 2 flags in the AFL era is still better than many. You've got to be in it to win it.

I'm genuinely curious. I'm a West Australian who grew up not really liking any Vic clubs (except maybe North a bit for some reason) so have no interest in VFL pissing matches. I used to dislike Carlton and Essendon more than Collingwood in the 90s but that reversed since those two haven't had much success, while Coll have.

Collingwood seem to specialise in those. I have found another one....

Not delivered on time, but a Grand Final victory nonetheless. Like a hen's fang that. :)
Was definitely a strange feeling lol, crowd was dead silent for most of the last quarter, everyone in shock.

They've won more flags in the last 6 years than you've won in the previous 60 years, I wouldn't be poppin s**t.

We'll give you a consolation flag for it, but never as prestigious as a Grand Final victory delivered on time as promised. :)
Come on mate. You're just inviting them to call our COVID grand final as fraudulent.

To win a flag after having to play two grand finals for it is no mean feat.

If you had a bottle of Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992 would you rip the top off it and skoll it in record time?

By the way, that stuff costs $500k per bottle so if you had a bottle of that as a Collingwood supporter you would soon be assisting the Police with their enquiries.

I digress. No, you would not rush into it. You would look forward to it. You would delay the benefit, and heighten the pleasure by building the anticipation. So that you could savour it.

Anyway, we are not the gurus of all things flag. We are just very very good at winning Grand Finals. Something Collingwood are very very bad at. :)

So microwaving those memberships for 35 years was part of the pleasure/anticipation?
