Ken Hinkley has a better win % than Damien Hardwick

The media really shouldn't be giving him this out:

  • this is the third time in Hinkley's tenure that a year has been torpedoed at least partly due to ruck issues, so its not something he's unfamiliar with or can be excused from seeing coming.
  • the club has actively traded out high performing ruckmen Ryder and Ladhams over the last few years for peanuts.
  • the reason for trading out Ladhams was that we had a young ruck in Sam Hayes ready to go. Hinkley has refused to play him for large parts of the year despite being available and showing promise during our run of good form earlier in the season.

The coach just hates playing and developing young talls, holding them to standards that aren't required for other players. It's been one of the most frustrating parts of being a Port supporter over the last 5-6 years.
I'm very surprised by the trajectory of Ladhams' career. He looked like he was going to take off in circa 2020/2021, now he plays ressies for the Swans and Port replaced him in the MSD with someone from the bush leagues called Burnt Turtle.

Haha yes to be fair, Ladhams was partially to blame for derailing his career at Port with numerous discipline issues. Hope he can recapture his form at Sydney. He was a unique type of player in the guts for us, almost like a tall midfielder.

Off-field stuff explains it I guess. He has some pretty rare traits for a guy that size, very agile and powerful when playing with confidence.

Ladhams will get his time at Sydney, Tom Hickey is 31 so he won't have too many years left.
Barring injury Ladhams will play 150+ AFL games which will be a good achievement for someone that was drafted via the Rookie Draft, he covers the ground well, has good skills, just needs to develop his ruck craft more.

Ok well I say you are half right and half wrong with this post. You talk about the 1st time your club bottomed out was when Gold coast and GWS came in..... Technically you are wrong.

You look back at certain years...

1997-8. Port were competitive when they started despite lack of concessions.

1999 made finals but didn't have early picks.

2000 finished outside of the top 8. Traded that 1st rounder to get one of the Wakelin twins, turned out to be an excellent move in the end.

2001-5: made top 4 for 4 years In a row. Top in 2002-4. Preliminary finals in 2002-3. Flag in 2004. Made 2 Major trades from 2001-03. Traded a 1st and 2nd to Essendon to get Damien Hardwick. Then another season traded a 1st and 2nd rounder to North Melbourne to get Byron Pickett.

Made finals in 2005 beating freo in the final round and beat north in an Elim final.

2006: 8 wins 14 defeats and 12th. Did well in this draft. Boak, Krakouer, westoff, Gray and Stewart. 4 out of those 5 played 10 years at port. Nathan Krakouer did 4 years and was traded.

2007: Port made finals. Got top 2 with 15 wins and 7 defeats. Beat west coast in the qualifying final. Beat north In that preliminary final. We all know about the grand final vs the cats.

Choco Williams was out of contract at the end of 2007, signs a 2 year extension at $500,000 a year

2008-12: dropped down to the bottom 4 in 2008. Old guys from that 2001-5 finals era started to leave.

2009: port Adelaide struggled again. Didn't make finals.

Despite this, Mark Choco Williams signed a 2 year deal on only $250,000 a year a pay cut of 50% from 2 years ago.

2010: port Adelaide were 5-2 after 7 games and beat The crows in the showdown. Port only won 1 more game under choco and he is sacked or told to leave. Matty Primus takes over as interim coach for the rest of the season. Port wins 4 of the next 7 games.

2011: Port were ok for the 1st few games. Then beats the crows in the showdown. They then back it up with a loss to the sun's. Port are a shambles and ends up 3-19.

2012: port are slightly better. Primus was sacked after that infamous loss to the Giants. Port ended up 14th with 5 wins and a draw.

You claimed your team's rebuilding phase started when sun's came into the comp and had most of the picks in that 2010 draft. Nope the rebuild came after that 2008 season when port Adelaide were bottom 4. Got Hartlett at pick 4.

In the 2009 draft, your team had picks 8, 9 and 16. And stuffed All 3 picks . John Butcher was one, Jasper pittard was another. I don't know who the 3rd man was.

Either way when first bottom out or on the initial creation of the club we had advantages of SA players and concessions like most start up teams get. That was our initial build but was helped along with some talk about the hiding of SA prospects like tredrea etc. Having a good list was a guarantee.

Going back to Ken and the list he had, our club was in a bad spot with primus, laidley as an assistant coach over zoom. On top of that when at the bottom of the ladder we had GWS and GC take the bulk of the picks (most ending up going back to Victoria). Can ken be blamed when that period was built on bad foundations and the lack of advantages other clubs got. I personally think he has done well with the list we had.

Go back through the premiers of the last decade and more and see how they built there lists. You will have priority picks, F/S's and some clubs getting lucky with recruitment (the VIC go home factors has helped massively). Port while making prelims seem to be a player or 2 short of being a real contended.

Hawks - Priority Picks, good trading with gunstan etc.
Bulldogs - F/S picks helped
Geelong - F/S picks - 3 generational players
Pies - Priority picks and F/S
Richmond - Priority pick (was later but Alex Rance) and Vic go home factor in Prestia. Added Lynch later.
Melb - Had multiple periods of bottoming out, Frawley compo and May/Lever recruits.

If Port/Ken had some more help with the list build, would have that made things different?

We were lucky to get rockliff, motlop, lycett as F/A's. Add in Dixon trade.

that 2009 draft was really bad.

I just feel the list we had was never at the top competition talent wise and the Prelim years were a good achievement.

Ladhams got a thumb injury right when Hickey came back from injury and then Hickey's form hasn't warranted him being dropped. I suspect next season Ladhams will start as the number 1 ruck unless he has a shocking off-season

Not to mention being shafted with a 19 pick as compensation for Buddy Franklin.
And that was unfair to the Hawks despite them winning the flag that year.

An injury prone Daisy Thomas went from Collingwood to Carlton as a free agent. Collingwood's pick for an injury prone Thomas was like pick 11.

Not having a ruck all year hasn't helped Ken but he's been there 10 years. Koch really should have written up a succession plan this year, like how Eddie wrote up a succession plan for Malthouse, after Malthouse had been at Collingwood for 10 years with no silverware to show for his tenure.
Not selecting a ruck and not having a ruck are two entirely different things.

I would be OK with Hinkley if we miss out on Clarkson.

Been at Port for 10 years reckon he run his race there and needs a new club

One thing is for sure under Hinkley he wont accept pea heart efforts that Essendon showed on Sunday.
Hinkles coaches like a gym junkie!
His teams look big and strong bullies around the bottom ten on the ladder then a proper fighter (top 8 side) comes along not only do his teams not fight he pumps up the oppo so much after the fact to justify his incompetence because he don’t know how to fight.
(Except for new contract)

Pretty spot on summary.

That was a joke, yet you guys got better.

Similar to 2003 Nick Stevens and Port.
You didn’t get shafted in 2003 with Stevens.

Collingwood offered a first and second round pick for him but you guys declined that. You tried shafting Stevens and Collingwood over and it backfired on you.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

That wasn't a good move by port but more the the point our list was good enough at the time to be able lose a player of his quality and still win the premiership in 04. We wanted Didak at the time which in hindsight was smart to be rejected by the pies.
