There is an odd infatuation with some on this board in regards to certain players.
It was a fair and reasonable post, but I think I can explain the "infatuation" (read: vilification) re: Murphy.

In Murphy's early career, I was quite a fan. He struck me as a fearless, tough nugget. I liked that.
I forgave him his mistakes, his missed snaps for goal, his positioning and his silly attempts at Mark of the Year.
I put it down to youth, inexperience and a kind of WOW!-I'm-playing-AFL:D exuberance.
I waited for him to get better, grow up; you know, improve, like Soligo for example
BUT
he didn't.
He hasn't. I suspect after 115 games he won't.

All the stuff that were minor irritations to me became major annoyances, but Nicks stuck fat with him.
50 games, 75 games, 100 games which in hindsight make me think that Nicks is extremely patient and forgiving or, well, just plain dumb.
Making Murphy a part of the Leadership group confirmed the latter. In that, he lasted a year.
A leader, he ain't.
Now, when we have a few better options as depth for our AFL side, Nicks has kept him in the squad.

It was after about 50-60 games I wanted Murphy out. Certainly 80-90.
The fact that he's playing tomorrow, that Nicks has promoted a proven 115-game dud ahead of those reasonable, more-upside options --- especially Taylor --- appalls me.
It also depresses me, even after those really good 3-0 wins, because we still have the mug who promoted him as Head Coach.
As with Murphy, I waited for Nicks to get better, grow up (as a Coach); you know, improve, like Hardwick for example
BUT
he didn't.
He hasn't. I suspect after 119 games, he won't, if only because he repeats his worst mistakes (eg selecting Murphy) but expects a different outcome.

4 posts in amongst the Murphy wailing? Im sure you can cope.
Bringing it back to selection, I know you're not a fan but what was your quote on Smurf being "an inside bull" again.
I can't quite remember exactly, but it's also one I can't forget!

I said something like he's actually good at stoppage, which he is. He's genuinely not bad inside a contest, he just isnt very good anywhere else, and definitely not as a small forward. I reckon that was said about 2 years ago??

Captains run was uneventful despite being 3/4 of an hour late. Didn’t even notice Murphy out there (I’m sure he was there) but definitely saw Nankervis.

It is hot and muggy, boys will definitely feel it.

Was nice to see some of the lads come across to sign a few things and take pics with the fans. Borlase and Cumming are so broad across the shoulders. Dan Curtin and Ben Keays went the extra mile and were last in.
Loved the pics thanks Jen, especially the two fans' pics. Was one of them you?

Those nails, YOWZA! Divine Decadence? (see: Cabaret --- you're our own Sally Bowles).

You're not just a Gin-drinkin' Mama, but a genuine Crows groupie, ha!!:D

The real comedy outcome from the match would be if Murphy has stepped up his game significantly and like with Matt Crouch in 2023, criticism of Nicks immediately switches to wondering why he wasn't picked earlier.

Oh jeez, can't you stay on topic mate?

He looks like a natural stoppage midfielder TBH, but he was never going to make it in the AFL in that spot.

It's really strange how the Crows are doing this dance of "we're still deciding whether it will be Nankervis or Berry that plays". That's not how things have ever been done before... nobody names a squad of 24 and decides on the day which one is playing. What are they waiting to see before making their minds up? Weird.
