Port with a massive amount of changes. Usually showdowns are 50 50... but we should really be favourites here
Yeah that made me change my tip when I saw that. They've basically changed a quarter of their team.

If we lose this it'll be a massive failure.

inb4 Nicks "hold my beer"

One thing I've noticed about Nank is almost every time he gets the ball he tries to take on a tackler. Usually by trying to spin out of it which results in someone else tackling him and him either giving away a free or a wild handball to get rid of it. Looks like he is trying to show he can evade everyone rather than do the simple pass each time. Has happened multiple times a game the last few weeks
He should pass 25 metres and then run on for the handball.

That has me puzzled. Is he really playing Midfield? surely not
He is and going very well too, no surprise given he captained the Northern Knights and played all his junior footy as their lead midfielder and polled well in the Morrish Medal in his top age year.

I actually sat near Hamish at Mars Stadium when the Knights played the Ballarat Rebels that year and Lachie was the Knights best that day playing midfield against a Rebels midfield of Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry and Willem Drew.

I'd hazard a guess his name would have have been entered in Hamish's notes from that game.

Lachie as a midfielder especially at boundary stoppages always hits the contest at speed.

So the test is though, are they looking to play him as a midfielder? Select him at AFL level? I can only imagine the lynching from supporters on this board if that ever happened.

Unfortunately I think his size is seen as a restrictor in that regard, but he can certainly find plenty of the footy when played on ball.

Curious as to why you were tipping Pear after the results last week?
I default to tipping Port in Showdowns because it's a win-win, and has a 50% success rate. I generally don't tip us against Port in the first Showdown unless it's blindingly obvious we're top 4 quality, they're bottom 4 quality type scenario.

The Willie stuff is also the perfect fuel for their "backs to the wall, it's us against teh worl!" shit.

whats shocking is someone who doesnt fit in the boards narrative getting shat on. Yet funnily enough its changed nothing. Tell me where shitting on me when clearly Draper isnt being selected is magically going to get him selected.

We know you are not on the selection committee, neither are any of us.

This is a forum/the thread to discuss the selection changes, you are backing the selection decisions, others are putting their alternate thoughts forward, you then make statements that seem to contradict your previous views.

No actually, not even defending them. Only explaining why it might be happening. I have said numerous times I dont care if he is selected, just can understand why he perhaps isnt. So shoot me for not wanting to blast the club for this.

But how much of it is AFL fitness over Sanfl fitness that allows him to benefit in this way.
Might pay to check some of Lachie's stoppage clearance numbers when he's played AFL, he ain't too shabby in that facet of the game. Don't ever recall him ever having a decent run at it as a mid in the AFL?

Interesting selection this week, and to my mind the right call. Nicks is very rapidly winning me over. He has always been very good at a lot of aspects of the head coaching role, but this year he appears to have improved dramatically in a few areas that he was quite deficient in. His tactical nouse, game day plan and inflexibility has clearly hampered us in the last 18 months and so seeing the last 2 weeks selections and last weeks game plan I found really encouraging.

The way he used Dawson and Rachelle last week, bringing in Smith to replace Hinge and the general structure of our backline against a very dangerous opponent was really good. keeping faith in Nankervis this week is to me showing he is getting so much better at balancing the line between development and fielding our best team. Our wings have been our worst performing line for the last 2 years, and it’s an area that is so important to successful teams, so seeing him recruit and have faith in Cumming, Curtin and Nankervis for these roles holds us in really good stead for the future. Jones and Sholl are just not good enough in those positions, while Nankervis has all the traits to be a long term successful AFL wingman.

Furthermore, giving Sid a block of full midfield games in the 2’s is undoubtably the right call. He is just never going to improve as a midfielder playing as a small forward behind Rankine, Rachelle, ANB and Keays or as sub, and he clearly isn’t ready to take on midfields like Carlton or Ports full time at the moment. He will be a great player long term for us and I’m fully supportive of the way we appear to be handling him.

The last 2 weeks have seen us put out the best teams that I have seen us put on the field for a very long time, and very bullish for the rest of this year.

And continue to play Murphy in the middle in the two’s

At this point its like Nicksy's safety blanket. As long as he is getting strong advice from the rest of the selection panel to leave him in the 2's, I don't care anymore.

Of course we'd rather see actual AFL potential mids in there, but baby steps.

Not one of these ins make our 22. None of the outs do either. State of their list is terrible, and we should win easily. If we don’t it’s not on talent.

Agree, those 10 players who will have played in the last two games would not make our current side and I'd only add one maybe 2 at the most to our squad.

The 10 players picked for them in their best 23 in the last two weeks - none would force their way into our current side, if we don't win tomorrow Nicks should be sacked immediately - zero excuses now.

Dunno if that is just AFC club bias or whether the power supporters would agree too?

Add to our squad?
Visenti - yep, has shown signs
Sinn - nope, mid sized defender - we have plenty of depth
McEntee, Burton, Sweet, Evans - all crap
Berry/Moraes/Lorenz - Dunno, bit early to tell? Worth keeping on Power list but would you trade for any at the end of the year?
Rioli - overweight 30 Y.O - no thx

Purely judging the sides on paper, we should be favourites here. Then you have to factor in the home crowd advantage, Port's inferiority complex being activated and the Crows being absolutely hopeless every time we look like favourites. I'm not comfortable at all.
I think if we can get a bit of a lead up they will cave and it will be a comfortable win.

The key without stating the obvious is the midfield, break even we win, beat them and we will pump them. They won’t be able to stop our forward line and our defence can cope with theirs.

Where did I say that? I must have missed where Butters, Serong and Petracca all never showed glimpses and were dog shit when they were managed in their first season.

It's hilarious you said that my narrative needs work.

Then you dropped off 2 of the 5 examples I used because Bont and Smith played a ton in their first year.

Then your insinuation that Butters, Serong, and Petracca were managed is just B.S.

Petracca wasn't managed in his first season. He did his ACL in feb of 2015 and missed the entire season. He then got to fitness by Round 6 and played every single game in year 2.

Serong had a debut year in 2020 (covid year) and after missing the first few weeks played the last 14 games in a row.

Butters played 19 of 22 games including the first 19 of 20 games.

After this round (Round 9) Sid will officially played in 7 games, with only 2 full games. Thats on track to play around 5 or 6 full games in his first year.

Ive seen the games, and its argued Draper is playing out of position, but he has not really set the world on fire commanding a spot. People arent arguing for his selection based on current performance, they want him selected on promise. But again, im not against his selection im just trying to build context as to why he may not be selected at this time. Not being selected round 9 of his first afl season his hardly going to be a detriment to his afl career.
I think you might need better internet in Portugal if you are watching Sid and having observations like this

Hard to argue with any of your views here. Sid is going to be very good but definitely hasn’t earnt a spot on merit yet, and clearly needs midfield time at a lower level to hone his craft.

Geez mate Joe Berry would be a massive in for us and our list, potentially an AA small forward that is very capable for squirts in the midfield.

Somewhat shocked Boak is playing in the 2s tomorrow.

I thought an experienced calm veteran would be what they needed, especially given who theyve turned to.

I don't buy into the "anyone can win Showdowns"

Ladder position may suggest otherwise, but we have been the better side the last two seasons. We have won 3/4. Could be 4/4 had Houston not knocked out Rankine last game.

We are the better team. Far better bookends, and our midfield is on par now.

To not win, and by a fair margin, would be a shock IMO.
