Being at the game live it never felt like we were in control at any stage. Good kicking from the pies, but the same old transition problems struck again.

Much being made of the goal kicking but it wasnt deplorable. Pies were just very good

Defending and decision making is killing us.
We have zero nous on how to press from our HF to the opposition goals. Truck needs to sort his system out urgently.

There’s a guy at my local who’s played over 400 senior games. Been at the club since he was a kid. Plays half back and in his early 30s..captain. His brother played in an Ashes series in England and is a WA cricket immortal.

Everyone loves him and he keeps a high level regimented fitness level to keep going and be a contributor even though he’s slow as hell now.

Apart from the famous cricket brother ..Heppell reminds me of him now.


But it’s not c grade amateurs our captain is in.

This is the elite league and Heppell ain’t no Pendlebury

If this was AFL Career Mode where you didn't have to deal with any of the real world impediments or ramifications for shipping a player off, then getting rid of Shiel at the end of last year would have absolutely been the right call list management wise. His 2 or 3 decent clearances per game don't make up for everything he does poorly.

Nothing in the VFL right ups suggested he did anything of great note in the other games. An AFL
Listed player kicking 2-3 in a VFL game isn’t meaningful in and of itself.

Right now he is not AFL standard.

Baldwin not AFL ready. Hind had a mare. Thought Cutler would have been a better option than Cox.

Too many go missing at times. Pies couldn't miss.

Some positives, but we handball way too much into trouble. Defence better but we still let the ball out far too easy.

Will be 1-6, can't see us getting close to the Dogs.

Since 2014 the leading goal scorer has never had 50 goals in a year. If he played the last 13 games in the VFL for 39 goals he would have more goals in the VFL than an AFL listed forward in that period.

Some of our guys lack that little bit of quality that can’t be taught and consistently kills us. Whether it is tapping the ball the wrong way, not knowing how to defend space, regularly kicking it to the oppositions advantage when trying to go forward, not applying pressure and letting an opponent run away with the ball.

We are structurally stronger with Jones, Snelling and Stewart in the team. Walla too, when he's fit. We did ok today given that our spine is substantially weakened by those outs.

Does anyone remember last year we seemed to have such a good forward hanbdall game, we conceded a lot but we also had like the 4th highest points for, for the season

These are very valid questions that Rutton has absolutely no idea how to answer in a way that makes sense.

However..rest assured..we are training hard and working towards playing the way we want to……..

The context here is whether he should have been selected.

Taking out the 5 in one game, what happened in the other 2 games? Was it 2 goals in both games? How did he get them? Were they all from winning 1:1 contests? Was there a meaningless Joe the Goose or two thrown in? How many came when the game was hot? How many came in junk time? Who was he playing on when he kicked the goals?

Like I said….an AFL player can kick 2-3 at VFL level and it can be really meaningful….or not.

like the Brisbane game, it's hard to win when the opposition doesn't miss. Obviously the way we turn-over the ball heading into the 50 gives them prime shots at times, but some of them, like the two free-kicks kelly gave away by being a total dumb-arse plus the Brody/Hind 50, are just pot luck (and we were pretty good at shooting too.)

He wasn't at his best, but feel like Hind really should have played the whole game. Some of the times Parish and Merrett got the ball around clearances, they clearly needed a option running up from the defence, although that plays into the issues of being defensively exposed if it gets turned over.

I was thinking about this, are we just crap at defending and allowing the opposition to kick easy goals anyways? How many goals were kicked from more than 45 degree angles?

Not bad. Won the inside 50s, 80% disposal efficiency, won the clearances and centres clearances easily, won the contested possessions. Tackling still needs work.

Why did they change the gameplan?

Easy to answer when you are at the game on level 3. The other sides are setting up a midfield zone and we are either not working hard enough to find space or the young blokes are not confident to take the game on. The game plan has not really changed. Other sides know we want to play on through the middle so that is where they set their zone. We are being forced to play slow footy down the line and we do not have the players that can keep working to the outside.
One example of this was Durham at around the 5 minute mark so so in the last quarter. Had two players free in the middle but he did not go there he waited and kicked long to a 4 on 2.
The have lost confidence in what they are doing. It does not help that when we do break free there is a dodgy handball or a kick that goes straight to the opposition defenders. We end up out of position and unable to defend.

There was a brief period where Fantasia was in so hotter form he looked like the best player in our side.

It only lasted 4 or 5 weeks.

Like a shooting star burning bright for a brief second of illuminating joy that made us ponder how wonderful the universe is…
