Round 1, 22 changes

Hey Mofra - I've seen you mention it a couple of times now that Trengove won his B&F as a ruck.

I'm pretty sure he won his B&F while he was playing as a KPD. He didnt move into the ruck until Ryder was out for the year and Lobbe was injured at the same time - which was 2016 IIRC.
He won (tied for first) the Cahill Medal for B&F in 2011 when he was still only 20. He was described back then as a key defender who could help out in the ruck if needed, but was definitely spending most of his time as a KPD.

Yes, it's another Bevo headscratcher. I hope he's onto something (not sure what)... and not getting too cute.

Biggs Trengove JJ
Crozier Cordy Wood
Mclean Macrae Hunter
Schache Jong Dunkley
Dahlhaus Boyd Dickson
Roughhead Libba Bont

CD, Dale, Adams, Naughton

We need clamps and speed to beat GWS. Don't want too many 'slower' type players in this team. Libba, Picken, Wallis all together is too much for mine.

Schache to be an outside player who runs to space and uses his endurance to mark outside of packs and on the lead (running back, maybe).
Jong to provide pace and versatility

If no Boyd, play Naughton back and Cordy forward.

Assume it's all been a game of cat and mouse and we really are going to play players in their best positions.

Missed Suckling perhaps?

No. Just couldn't fit him in. He does get caught and makes mistakes in the backline. I tried to balance mobility, disposal, pace and height. They all have their strengths...it's matter of which ones we want to utilise the most.

The game will be dependant on our defensive mindset and ability to run both ways all day. If we can't stop their spread, it won't matter who we have in there.

He'll probably get a game on the strength of his versatility and how he brings the ball into our forward line.

Not what I want to see, but think we will line up like this:

FB: Biggs, Adams, Naughton
HB: Williams, Cordy, Crozier
C: Hunter, Libba, Suckling
HF: Daniel, Wood, Dahl
FF: JJ, Roughy/Toyd, Dale
R: Trengove, Bont, Macrae
Int: Mclean, Dunkley, Dickson, Picken/Jong

Toyd to play if Roughy is out, likewise with Picken and Jong.
Wallis to ease into the season in the VFL.
Clay has been unsighted, so doubtful he comes in.
Could see Honeychurch being named ahead of Dickson and causing infinite (warranted) melts.

I reckon you have pretty much nailed it (Well I see it almost the same way).

Initially I expected he would play down back, but after watching the JLT I'm happy with what he gives us around the ground and he should work well in tandem with Roughy. He did a few nice things when forward as well. At the end of the day we don't have a dominant tap ruckman on our list (English could be that down the track) and he gives us more around the ground than any others. I'm now looking forward what he will bring and add to the group.

Wood Adams Naughton
Williams Cordy Crozier
JJ Libba Hunter
Bont Trengrove Dunkley
Dahlhaus T.Boyd Picken

Roughead, McLean, Macrae

Suckling, Dale, Daniel, Dickson

EMG: Biggs, Jong, Scahche, Honeychurch

That would be my round 1 team. Biggs will play over Boyd though and Wood will play forward but I would hope Redpath comes in the next week as we need his type of player.. desperately. Huge chance for Red when his back. Same to Scahche and Boyd but judging off pre-season Bev doesn't prefer either atm.

Sorry but you say it’s a game of cat and mouse and then name Jong at CHF and Schache at HF? Hunter on a HBF and JJ BP ?

This team loses by 100 points it’s completely out of balance in my opinion and isn’t that fast.

Disagree about Trengove - he won Port's B&F as a ruck, and has trained all pre-season as a ruck/forward. That is playing to his strengths.

Accidentally came across this post while searching for Naughton info for fantasy purposes. Pretty much all of this is wrong. Trengove won his B&F with us as a defender and played all his best football with us as a defender. He’s barely adequate as a ruck and he’s not remotely adequate as a forward.

The Trengove to the forward line experiment killed his career at Port. If the Dogs try the same thing you’ll kill his career at the Dogs too, which I’d hate to see.

Yeah I’m surprised anyone that wat hex te JLT2 game and him get dominated in the ruck contests still still he is anything more than a pinch hitting ruckman and even that is too much for me.

Put him at CHB and leave him there. Cordy can play forward and has a premiership medal to prove this.

Coaching staff trying to be too smart again forms my opinion we are in for a poor year.

I am exactly of this opinion.

There is not clear difference between what he gives us as a ruck fwd to what roughhead Boyd or Campbell would.

But as a backman he would take the beasts none of our others have shown they can.

We have a big problems with high balls into our defence without Morris and wood there - big problems

All that being said how was it they didn’t play him back when from the outside at least it seemed you needed key backs.

Clearly he was forced into the ruck with Ryder out and injuries to ur other ruck whose name escapes me.

But why then wasn’t he moved back where he played all his footy - even before he was a dog it was a head scratcher for me

I was really looking forward to this season with Trengove solidifying our defence and spine.

Then we put him ruck/forward, move wood forward, lose run and carry from HB and Mid by increasing jj’s forward game time and potentially miss Bont’s creativity into the forwardline (i.e. the final ball).

Need JJ, Bont and Daniel to have the ball in their hands going in F50. At least it reduces the times we would blatantly turn the ball over and get cut open on the counter.

I'll bite - Roughy would be our no 1 ruck (clearly) when fit. Our best contested mark too. Roughy is a week to week proposition though.

Campbell is a dinosaur - aggressive but does he have the tank to play the way Bevo asks? His papers seem stamped
Boyd isn't ready it seems. The best forward of our ruck/forwards except he can't mark the ball on a lead unless it's kicked up high which gives defenders a chance to spoil.
English is a pre-season or three away from playing regular football and I'll be surprised if he doesn't overtake everyone on our list as no 1 ruck.

I thought Trengove would be a backman when he came to us but he hasn't played there all pre-season an I like his aggression which is another problem with Boyd (and Schache)

Here's the basic Trengove timeline:

2010-2015: Carves out a career for himself as an unspectacular but solid key defender.
2016: Ryder misses the year with suspension, Dougal Howard and Matthew Lobbe both miss most of the year with injury, leaving Trengove to be forced into the ruck basically by default. Port struggle to get within half of our opponent's hitout totals for most of the season. Meanwhile, Tom Clurey gets the call-up from the SANFL to take what was Trengove's spot in defence, and establishes himself in the 22.
2017: Ryder comes back, which leaves Trengove without a home in the ruck, but Clurey has now established himself in the side which leaves him without a home in defence either. Coaching staff tries moving him forward to fill Jay Schulz's old spot, but he's terrible at the role and ends up falling out of the side. 19 year old Todd Marshall gets selected ahead of him for our Elimination Final despite having career stats of two games, one goal, four spindly limbs and zero visible muscles, because that's how bad Trengove is at playing up forward. Meanwhile, Dougal Howard returns from injury, gets thrown into defence and immediately looks a player, leaving Trengove even further away from getting a gig in the position he's actually good at. So he explores free agency and ends up at the Dogs.
2018: Hopefully Trengove moves back into defence and re-establishes himself as a solid key defender again, because otherwise I fear for his career. I love the bloke but he's a C grade ruck and a D grade forward.

Hunter is on the wing. As he has been on many occasions.

As far as the backline is concerned I take little notice of actual spots. The players will move around, protecting areas and not be in the position named. As an example I expect JJ to cover ground from the backline to the wing. He will guard different areas, but have the pace to provide back up and run the ball out.

Jong is CHF but will not really play there. He is there to assist the midfield and provide cover. Keep it in tight, provide spread and be a marking target. Expect the FF to play up the ground and be more like the old CHF.

Schache 's job is to be a defacto wing man / leading forward. He can play up the ground and run forward to provide marking opportunities in the forward line. His strengths are knowing where to run and lead.

After a long hot summer, only a week to go.
I look forward with optimism.
For its footy ,it's entertainment
Not to take it too personally.
Just enjoy it being back.
Go doggies
Wood Trengrove Naughton
Wallis Cordy Crozier
JJ Libba Hunter
Mclean Adams Dunkley
Dahlhaus T.Boyd Picken

Roughead, Bont Macrae

English, Dale, Daniel, Dickson

You forgot:

2017: In a sensationally stupid move that everyone thought was idiotic at the time, gets left out of Port’s Elimination Final team and watches on as Port win the inside 50s 63-46 but Todd Marshall takes 3 marks and kicks 0.0 and Clurey & Howard get killed by Kennedy, squib Darling and a completely cooked Drew Petrie who combine for 8 of the Eagles’ 12 goals in a 2 point Eagles victory.
