Most of them were aerial. Murphy was Todd's defender for the vast majority of contests. Not Moore.

You think Todd was 1 on 1 against murphy a bunch of times on the weekend?

He needs to make the most of his opportunities, which means kicking gettable goals from the limited chances that come his way.
Half the team is guilty of this, but Todd should be nailing his shots.

It's also Marshall's fault if he's not getting on the lead. He can do it. We've all seen him to do it.

If the mids are ignoring his leads then that's a different matter altogether.

Hinkleys gameplan floods our forward line. It’s all part of his grand plan to concede getting easy marks and shots on goals in a trade to lock the ball in the forward half and make it hard for our opponents to get it past halfway once we do.

And to a point it works..


As I’ve said before, when we win the ball out of the centre really quickly we lower our eyes and hit targets (players that are able to lead into space as well) and everything looks great.

The reason we struggle to score is because we've always been Dixoncentric and he's always wrestled with his opponents rather than tried to get on the lead.

The problem with Hinkleyball isn't locking it in the forward 50 - it's transitioning the ball too slowly in order to have space to operate in, and historically its kicking to the pockets which either results in a low percentage shot on goal or repeated boundary throw ins.

No. I've never watched Port before. Didn't watch the game twice. Didn't play close enough attention to Todd's contests to be able to provide detail of contested numbers of he and his opponents.

You insisting to the death that Todd was on the best defender in the league (your original statement) just because makes it so. You would say the earth is flat rather than say he had an off game. Take the goal and the 2.5 classy goal assists Todd had and move on to next week like he will.

We don't get Dixon many marks on the lead by design. If he's on the lead the kick might miss him and we might concede an intercept mark, so lump it high on his head. That is the game plan and has been for half a decade.

Every team wants to lock the ball in their front half, we've just pushed that concept to it's extreme where we completely disregard worrying about how we'll score when it gets in there, it's all about repeat entries and not conceding intercept marks.

We kick to pickets because opponents out their ruckmen in the corridor and he might take an intercept mark.

We try to transition the ball quickly, but if it's not on we slow down, chip it around, and make sure we can get it inside 50 high and long to a contest so we don't concede an intercept mark. If we do break quickly, it's usually from forcing a turnover in our front half as our opponents are trying to rebound.

Direct opponent isn't a meaningful point when both teams make liberal use of loose men and intercept markers.

Aliir doesn't always take the best key forward but he still positions himself to get to balls directed to that forward, and Moore arguably the only player in the league better than Aliir at getting to defensive marking contests.

It's not 1985 where every position is a 1v1 contest. Having Moore in the backline made it more difficult for all of our marking forwards.

Marshall basically hit his career averages minus 1 goal, had our most marks inside 50, our most goal assists, our most score involvements, equal most marks on a wet night. It certainly wasn't his best game but he was hardly terrible.

I wouldn’t have to defend todd so much if there wasn’t always the same group ready to can his every game irrespective of what’s actually happening out there.

Todd was constantly having to beat Moore in the air who was allowed the chance to run and jump at the ball.

I don’t think transition was the problem - it wasn’t great, but against the top team and top defence it was pretty good.

The problem was conversion. If Todd (and Finny and Evans and …) had converted their ”very gettable” shots, it wouldn’t have been a problem.

And Murphy is the ideal negator for someone like Todd. He’s big and fast and lacks skills, but he knows his limitations and plays within them. In a marking contest he doesn’t’t even think of trying to outmark, he just punches. Exactly the sort of player we need, BTW.

But in spite of whatever Murphy did, Todd should still have ended up with 3-4 goals.

100 percent. It was bizarre to see him so free. X is usually good with that stuff.

That’s his role. Defensive side. The half forward comes up to the contest and should lock off the opposition winger.
Seriously, some on here have no idea.
