  • Get first hands on the ball and turn it over leaving us badly out of position
Exactly and how many times were those turnovers in the centre or in front and then 5 seconds later it’s coming into a d50 that only one or two defenders are in

That was a top 4 team vs a bottom 4 team.

We killed ourselves with poor skills and variable pressure.

But the kids were mostly good. Loved Blight and patches from Armstrong, Bauer, Brown etc.

Taranto was not poor, but not good. Hopper was OK. KMac I liked for what he was asked to do. Short solid. Overall our senior players were poor to OK.

I ended the game seeing lots of bright lights ahead for us. But this season is going to be more down than up by results. Which is OK. If we can get players to grow as AFL footballers then job done.

Midfield was deplorable, thought the effort was pretty good considering the margin and difference between the teams. Big difference in talent and experience. Young guys in Brown, Armstrong, Mansell, Campbell lead the way, Short, Ross, Taranto pretty poor especially for senior guys
Think Short gets off too easy
He needs to lead and get his own ball instead of the easy handball receive and then he kicks it long to the opposition
We do not have a creative half back in him Brown would except he needs more games

Aints beat Scats…good
We play Aints next….
On the Marvel track, they will kill us unfortunately…If Geelong couldn’t stop their fast start, not sure we can…But it’s all about getting games into these kids…And maybe more positional changes to find things out…

Last year was the big midfielder draft, we had 8 top picks, and look what we did. picked faull early despite knowing there was a glut of talls that were going to fall down the order, then picked trainor, armstrong, sims and traded out.

truth is our list managers have decided that TT and hopper will play every game on their contracts and have probably seriously overrated dow and sonsie. they haven't realised how bad things are.

1. Faull would have been gone by our next pick; widely reported Sydney were well into him.

2. Our rebuild will happen over multiple drafts and our first three selections were players who can play mid/ forward.

3. The next full time legit mid that was taken after Faull was Ough at 36. Murphy Reid more outside than a TT/ Hopper replacement.

Taranto and Hopper:

  • Too slow to defend explosive Rozee/JHF in scrimmages
  • Stuck on the treadmill when it leaves congestion
  • Get first hands on the ball and turn it over leaving us badly out of position

I still think they play more good games than bad for us but their weaknesses got badly exposed today.

Issue with TT and Hopper is I think the game has changed significantly since we traded for them. The crash and bash style which favors both is well on the way out with speed and skill taking over. We’ve got some of the players on the list who may be able fill that already (Lalor/ Smillie/ KMac2/ Hotton); but it’ll take a few more drafts, and a few more seasons to get these guys the experience and knowledge to play midfield at a high level.

Until then TT and Hopper we’ll have to persist with and hope that they can help develop the next midfield group.

boys need to learn full effort and intensity from the start of the first quarter.
today was a limp and weak display in the first half
work and effort needs to be the game plan.
applause for our kids, who tried hard

Had a bit of time to mull over that game. Result is whatever. As I've previously stated, I was okay with going through this year winless based on where our list build is at.

The most disappointing aspect of the game was, our senior players. They're there to set an example for the kids coming through but it was the kids setting the example today. We can't have that, especially this year.
Taranto pissed me off today, just no leadership or intensity. As did McIntosh when he got caught holding the ball after thinking he had an eternity to kick it inside 50. The difference between Nank's best and worse is too large. The fact that he isn't a tap ruckman means that his intensity has to be there every week and it wasn't today.
Hopper butchered it all day, Vlastuin couldn't get near it all day. Ross needs to find consistency in his game because we can't have him going missing every second week.

One thing I can't stand is dumb football and when we kept allowing Port the easy handball out the back after they marked on or around the 50 was driving me insane. It's forgivable once, but when it happens around 5 times, that's poor leadership on field and poor game sense.

We've got some bloody good kids though. I'm excited to see Smilie hopefully debut against the Saints next week. Will give us a different dimension in the middle. Not sure if it's as simple as Smilie in for Banks. Will be tuning into the VFL tomorrow to see who pushes their case.

Smillie not playing 2’s yet, but not far off…Hopefully Alger and Sims push a case, maybe Gray…McAuliffe should be straight in with a good showing…

Don't think Smilie will come in via the VFL.

Midfield got destroyed and we made lots of very basic errors all across the field - happy with the effort in the second half after being 10 goals down at half time, but expect showings like this at least once if not twice a month based on where we are at

Vlaus did very well to play out the game after being kneed in the head early, Armstrong had a great last quarter and a number of the young brigade showed signs

Lynch back next week will make a massive difference 👍🏻

Good summary.

My biggest gripe is with how easy we cough up the ball with panicky handballs straight to the oppo.

I would much prefer we just hold it in, wear the tackle and cop the odd holding-the-ball decision. At least that would give our backs/mids time to regroup and set up behind the ball.

But instead we repeatedly shat ourselves with ball in hand, handed it over meekly, often with a handball literally straight to a Port player, and off they went for another easy forward-50 entry and goal.

If we erroneously think that by spilling the ball out of our possession it is somehow contributing to moving the ball quickly, like we live back in 2017, then the coaches need to take a good hard look at themselves.

Similarly, it would be better to boot the footy 10 rows back into the stands and incur an out-on-the-full, than simply kick it into the waiting hands of an isolated intercept defender, who then switches or uses the corridor to punish us the other way.

It happened over a dozen times today.

We need to desperately improve the footy IQ of our players. I've given up on educating the likes of Macca, and Ross was pitiful today, but there's plenty of hope for the next gen if they're trained properly.

Closer to Picks 1 & 2 - we take the best mobile ruck and best quick midfielder.

Keep building through kids.

Need Taranto, Ross and Hopper to protect the kids, but that means midfield will get shit on against good, quick sides. Carlton actually hasn’t adapted to that midfield need as yet hence we were able to exploit.

Today, those three were nothing short of a disgrace.

But so many positives with our kids. Keep putting games into them. It’s our only way. Gonna get messy at times.

TT and Hopper are just part of what will be a suitable midfield mix moving forward. At the moment McAuliffe is on the fringes, Hotton is injured, Smillie is injured and Lalor has played two games.

Then there’s at least one more elite midfielder coming next draft, maybe two.

And Seth Campbell might get time in there also.

It’s not the fault of TT and Hopper that the fleet footed mids that’ll soon be part of the mix aren’t there yet.

Aaaannd #NoAura just becomes no aura again

While I am ok with the outcome today as kids got some great experience... However, I thought Nank was one of our biggest issues today. Stats might show he was even for hit outs, but Mark my word his Ruck work was horrible today. To the point that when he won a hit out it went to a Port mid most of the time.
we need ryan in asap. nank is a warrior but needs help. ryan can give nank plenty of a chop out with 50% ruck 25%fwd and 25%bench (freshen up). do it.
