Scott Pendlebury - Standing in the game?

I also love the conclusion that Pendlebury only played 30 minutes of the finals series.

These guys need to start watching footy beyond August even though their team's season is already done and dusted by that time...

Very average first final. Very good PF. Average first 3/4 of GF, very good last quarter. 2 x coaches votes across 3 x finals. Do you disagree with any of that?

Fadge trying to fit Pendlebury's finals record to Dusty's:

Dusty gets 70+ coaches votes in 3 x finals series and it’s downplayed .. Pendles gets 2 votes and he’s had an amazing final series … FMD.

6 Brownlow votes and 31 coaches votes playing full time mid in a top team. 2 coaches votes in the final series. Solid.

In close games for the premier decided on fine margins, those are a very good collection of games - and 10 is a fair number of them. So he didn't torch North Melbourne, West Coast, Freo and GWS (first time, when they got thrashed and were crap).

The biggest one of all: take Pendlebury out and Collingwood don't win the 2023 flag. Take Martin out and Richmond finish 15th/16th instead of 13th.

In those 10 x games he got 5 x coaches votes and 2 x Brownlow votes. That’s very low polling for a midfielder in the top-team… doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing some good football, but let’s not re-write history that he was doing much beyond playing good solid football. Which is no slight on a 35yo in his 18th season or whatever it is… he was a very valuable player and very consistent.

His finals series was solid overall. In the first final he was below average. In the PF he was good. Interestingly 8 x players received coaches votes and he wasn’t one of them, so coaches didn’t quite have him in the top-8 on the ground - but he had a good game and was perhaps next in line for votes. In the GF coaches rated him equal 5th best on ground - he was pretty average for three quarters then an excellent last quarter jagged him a couple of votes which was well deserved. He got 1 x Norm Smith vote from memory as well, so one of the 5 judges had him in the best 3 on the ground.

His standing in the game does elevate thanks to helping his team win a flag. But it doesn’t change the fact his entire season comprising 25 games playing midfield in the top-team netted 31 coaches votes and 6 Brownlow votes. A very solid return and you can’t expect much more from a 35yo.

Sorry is there a special disclaimer if Scott played only played "good" footy, clutch footy, in the close games throughout the year and in finals, to land Collingwood a premiership. Not as eye popping as Dangerfield 2022's run home, but no less impressive, as Pendles wasn't frequently rested.

The brilliant thing about close games is you know you needed to eak out every bit of quality and composure to get over the line. SP delivered when they needed him. And he steered them home in those two nail biting finales.

A very, very, very good season from the ageless champion. The fact we are still.speaking about it says a lot.

Who did you play in those games that you wouldn't of won without him?
He was averaging 8 clearances and top 10 for SIs so it all started with him. Engine room master. The Adelaide game we'd have been down by 5 goals at half time without him. The next 3 weeks he missed, we lost all of them. We felt the difference from him breaking his ribs 30 minutes into his return game.

Who did you play is what I asked?

Start with Round 4.

Here are those tallies for the top 40 midfielders for coaches votes since the award came out in 2003. Note that tallies were not made available 2003-2005, so best estimates were applied using the closest matching season (statistically, Brownlow, fantasy points). Mostly this effect was negligible, outside of Judd and Goodes who had excellent seasons between 2003-2005.

Judgement call was to exclude players who had most of their career outside of the Coaches Votes era (so Black misses out but Goodes is included). Obviously many careers are still in progress so it'll be interesting to see where everyone ends up:

Pendlebury and Dangerfield should join the 900 club next season (Ablett would likely be over 100 but his first 4 seasons they aren't published/available).

Who has a realistic chance of joining them by the end of their careers?

117 more for Martin, so you'd think he needs 3 more seasons around his 2023 level.

Bontempelli has less than 250 to go with plenty of good football left and would be my bet. Neale with under 300 but how much longer can he maintain this level?

Oliver, Petracca and of course Daicos are other candidates in the longer term. Maybe JHF judging from this Brownlow night, or young Sheezel as his midfield minutes increase.

Very good question.

We all know it's gonna be:
1. GAJ
2. Bont
3/4. Pendles/ Danger

And the watch will be on whether Naicos can overtake GAJ.

I just hope if he does it, that it's by more than 100 votes. GAJ did have similar level seasons in 2004 and 2005 to 2006, where he recorded 49 coaches votes.

If it's by less than 80 in particular then we have to get debating. ;)

Old man Pendles vs Tigers rd.3 2023. 24 disposals, 1 goal, 9 SI's, 2 goal assists and 6 Inside 50's.

Just another walk in the park for one of the goats.
I went to this game and it was a pleasure watching him carve them up.

Richmond never try to stop seagull stat padder types getting the ball, so I am shocked Scott "Pockets of Space" Pendlebury only got 24 disposals while he was watching the Liam Baker game high player rating show there from a front row seat. Pendlebury was =17th for contested possessions in that match with 8. It is surprising that Scott "Standing in the Game" Pendlebury couldn't win a bit more of his own Sherrin. However, nobody controls those otherwise uncontrollable pockets of space around half back like Pendlebury though, and nobody ever will. :)

I love when people who never watch us comment on our players. NFI, but so proud

McRae apparently had to give Scott a massive rev at 3/4 time in the Grand Final....

"FFS Scott those pockets of space around half back are out of control, now get the * out there and ******* get those pockets of space under ******* control. How many actual Grand Finals do you want to spud up in one career mate?"

Scott "Pockets of Space" Pendlebury in actual Grand Finals averages....

9 contested possessions
0.66 goals plus goal assists
a paltry 4.5 score involvements

No wonder then that during Scott's career Collingwood playing on their own home deck always seem to be within a kick of interstate and Docklands teams at final siren time in Grand Finals. He is too busy being a pockets of space controller to impact the scoreboard. :tearsofjoy:

You seem to have a bit of a fixation. Maybe a green tea will settle you down?

Maybe sad obsession is a bit more of an apt descriptor of your carry on.
