If Pettard backs up his NAB cup game, he will be a monty to be elevated.

#15: Chris Knights: The very first free agent in AFL history. The Tigers chased him hard and landed him without much fuss. Starved off opportunities at the Crows, Knights switched to the Tigers. A very injury prone player, with strong upside, Knights looks primed for a Half Forward and Midfield role, much like the role Dustin Martin played, giving us, yet again more depth in not only the midfield, but also the forward line. He is a very damaging player, or has shown pre-injury that he can be, and looks set to be given every opportunity that the RFC can afford him. I think 2013 is Knights for the taking, and he shapes up to be a crucial part of our team if we are to make finals. His kicking is good, and he is accurate in front of goals, but the only downsides are his speed and injury history. He is very slow at the moment. That may be pinpointed to the numerous injuries he has had, or it could just be Knights. You don't need to be a very fast player to be successful at AFL level (Shane Tuck, Sam Mitchell etc.), but you also need to make up for it in other areas. Knights makes up for that as a forward, where he is clean below his knees, a good mark overhead, and very accurate in front of goals, even outside 50. I expect Knights to show us why he was considered on of the best Half Forward in the game in 2013.
Knights had a rollercoaster game on Friday. The most notable event was him in the backline and flaffing about resulting in a loss of possession and eventually a North goal. The good thing he did later in the game was set up an O'Hanlon scoring opportunity
Define flaffing......
fumbling with the ball and panicking.Define flaffing......
Evening all. Sorry to invade guys and girls but I come in peace and to post a best 22. Always bang up for a best 22 discussion. Whatever team it is. Here's my go at Richmond's. Hopefully we hear the old "YELLOW AND BLACK" after a few more matches in 2013. Good luck for the season
BACKS: Grimes - Rance - Newman
HALF BACKS: Morris - Chaplin - Houli
The back line already looks more secure with T Chaplin at CHB. Will take a lot of pressure of Rance and a handy acquisition as a big bodied and experienced KPD. Rance and Chaplin take the two best tall forwards. Grimes takes the third tall forward. Hopefully he can get on the park because he adds a lot to the Tigers back six and they do miss him as the third tall when not there. Newman and Morris as the main small defenders and Bachar Houli as the chief rebounding defender. Pretty set back six and apart from Newman they are all 27 or under in 2013. Have a lot of time to get together and make a solid defensive unit
WINGS: Deledio - Grigg
CENTRE: Tuck
Any midfield without Deledio and Dustin Martin in the centre square 3 will go places. Deledio was a gun in 2012 playing in a half back / midfield rotation. Possessions wise he had his best year (for average) at AFL level and with Houli already a likely rebounding type Deledio can spend more time in the midfield and maybe pinch hit forward to put scoring pressure on. Grigg has been fantastic since coming from Carlton (you guys definitely won that trade) runs and carries the ball well although his kicking leaves a little to be desired sometimes. The two explosive wingman will be important to Richmond's hopes in 2013
Tuck is the kind of guy you want in a midfield, experienced head who's thriving on 1 year contract extensions. The main hard ball getter in the midfield he just continually feeds the ball to his mates and is an under rated part of the midfield. If you add Cotchin, Foley, Maric and don’t forget Martin in the midfield you get another line of players all 28 or under except Tuck. And with Foley's injuries hopefully he can be playing better footy for longer
HALF FORWARDS: Martin - McGuane - Knights
FORWARDS: Shane Edwards - Riewoldt - Vickery
Martin is just a bull of a player. Being in the second string midfield would sting him but can be damaging forward as well where he is just so strong one on one and would be hard for a smaller defender to beat him. Kicked 33 goals last year as a midfielder and with his sheer strength influences games like not many other players entering their 4th year. Knights is a handy pick up via free agency as well. Long and accurate left foot kick was a very damaging forward at the Crows before injuries wrecked his career there. If he can get fit will give Richmond extra outside pace inside 50 and in a possible midfield rotation. Edwards became more of a permanent small forward in 2012 and got amongst the goals. Good grab overhead and will lock the ball inside 50
McGuane's a bolter for the CHF role but played there in the latter half of 2012 and wasn’t out of place. A good size and with Vickery and Riewoldt deep might get a chance to play as a lead up half forward. Riewoldt had another super year and was stiff not to get AA honours after winning the Coleman and averaging about 3 goals a game. Kicks goals himself but brings his team mates into the game as well with getting to contests. A strong mark as well and a reliable kick he's a gun forward to build a finals campaign around. Vickery is an important part of the team as a third tall forward / ruckman. 2012 he wasn’t in form early than got injured as he was getting his touch back. McGuane, Riewoldt and Vickery (with Aaron Edwards off the bench) is a decent tall / mid-sized forward set up
FOLLOWERS: Maric - Cotchin - Foley
Big Ivan was a ripper for the Tigers in 2013. Brought much wanted and needed aggression and physicality to the Richmond ruck position. The midfield is much better for having Ivan as the bloke to rove off and not the previously tried but now traded Graham. Cotchin rose up again in 2012 and made himself into a top class midfielder even when copping heavy tags. Loved the way he went about it in 2012 and was stiff not to win the Brownlow. The thing that I liked about his game in 2012 was how much he was hitting the scoreboard as well. One of the most valuable players in the Richmond team. Foley must be a frustrating player for Richmond fans because he can just never have a full season. When playing the fans would love him to bits but would hate to see him on the sideline time and again. Crucial to the Tigers midfield and hard to believe but if your rating that Tiger midfield his probably ranked number 5 amongst the mids. Crucial player to the Tigers final hopes
INTERCHANGE
Eliis - Under rated in the AFL in his first year and would've gone mighty close to winning the Rising Star imo. Came to the club as a ready made defender and proved that in 2012. Big and accurate kick he will hold a spot in defence for now but in the future hopefully he can get his fitness base up and become a midfielder
Jackson - Recognised more for his off field work outside the club but inside the club he goes hard and is an uncompromising tagger. He does cross the boundaries of discipline but a key to the team's success with his shut down ability
Aaron Edwards - Off field concerns are worrying but let’s hope this guy has turned a new page. Only a one year contract so it’s a make or break year for him but for a bloke under 6 foot 2 he can be a real focal point in the Tigers forward line and probably gets introduced when Vickery is in the ruck or resting. Interesting to see how playing him and Riewoldt deep would work out
Conca - Reaping the benefits from more time in the gym. Versatile player where he can play as a smaller to mid-size rebounding defender or outside wingman. Future star of the Richmond team and plays well inside and outside
UNLUCKY (in no particular order, senior list only)
Batchelor - Was hard not to select him and a number of other clubs would love a bloke like Batchelor in their starting 18s or 22s. Reminds me a lot of the old number 11 Joel Bowden in how he plays. Composed when he gets it, mature body and puts his head over the footy. He'll no doubt be banging down the selection door if the other smaller to mid-sized defenders are missing. Longer term will replace Newman when he retires I think
BACKS
Dea – Tough break line to break into as a mid-size defender. Provides handy back up
Vlaustin (MID) – First year player in 2013 but has the size and competiveness to play AFL straight away. In a similar way to a midfield Martin of 2010. Try him out in the VFL and see if he has what it takes but again like Dea hard backline and an even harder midfield to break into
McIntosh – Another draftee who has the height and versatility to play stopping roles on talls or smalls. Good size and another rebounding option off half back
MIDFIELDERS
Helbig – Tough midfield to break into but he’ll be putting pressure on them to perform. Possible future replacement for Tuck in that he plays hard at the ball and tackles well
White – Has the speed and can find the footy but struggles to cement a starting place often. His speed makes him a good candidate as a sub when playing
Arnot – Like Helbig thrives on the contested footy. Injury cut short his year in the VFL. Another future part of the Richmond midfield
FORWARDS
Nahas – The most unlucky of the small forward to miss and will put pressure on his team mates to perform. Not just his goal kicking that is an asset but his tackling pressure has him leading the list of smaller forwards
King – Not as prolific on the goal kicking board in 2012 and with Knights and Edwards being introduced, and Shane Edwards showing more as a small forward has to fight to regain a spot.
McDonough – Draftee so has some work to do to get a gig past the starting 22, Nahas and King. Positive for the future but with his marking and goal kicking a feature. Can get higher numbers of possies for a small forward
RUCKS
McBean – Definite project ruckman but is a young ruckman worth investing in. Wins the ball in the air and his ground sills are good for a developing tall. Moves around the ground well and an accurate kick when pushed forward. Persistence is the key
Derickx – The next senior list ruckman in waiting. Good size and has AFL experience in 2012. Bustling type who needs to break in soon or could be overtaken by McBean long term or Stephenson if elevated in the shorter term
KPD
Astbury (KPF) – Think the club has settled on him as a defender but can swing forward. Athletically strong but hasn’t been able to consistently play AFL mostly due to injuries. Good depth for Rance, Chaplin and Grimes
Griffiths (KPF) – Was drafted as a forward / ruckman but has been swung into the back line successfully. Is a bug unit at 200 and 104 and as a key defender was pitted against power forwards without being ashamed. A big kick as well his defensive duties should be relieved with Chaplin coming in
KPF
Elton (RUCK) – Apart from maybe Astbury and Griffiths (depends where they are used) the cupboard is a bit bare for genuine tall forwards at Richmond. Only in his second year so is still putting weight on but competes well and is quick for a big man. Should hopefully be hitting his straps in the next couple of years and give the Tigers another tall option
O’Hanlon (MEDIUM TALL) – 8 games for 2 goals in 2012 but he will compete for the footy and marks strongly overhead making him play a bit taller than his 189 cm. Not a regular yet but could put pressure on A. Edwards position if his not showing enough
Best side I have seen picked so far. Would rather see S.Edwards in the pocket, with short spells in the midfield. He is more damaging around goals than King. Having Griffiths at CHF offers far better structure. No spuds ie Jacko , mcGuanne or White. Also many of the bench players could easily be picked in the starting 18. well done.My best 22 right now, including injured players.
FB: Morris Chaplin Pettard
B: Grimes Rance Ellis
C: Newman Foley Grigg
F: Martin Griffiths S.Edwards
FF: Vickery Riewoldt King
Fol: Maric Cotchin Deledio
Bench: Conca Houli Tuck (Vlaustin)
Fringe: Batch Knights Nahas Arnott
Jackson will definitely play round 1.
curious as to who he had in it??Great news...... Tony Shaw picked his final 8 yesterday and didn't have us in it.
The best thing about this is that the idiot is never right.
So thanks Tony, keep the dribble up you mental giant.
Jackson and McGuane will play round 1 imo.
Thanks mate, just to clarify this is who i'd pick round one, not who I think will be picked, Jackson and McGoof will be in the side, which should push out foley and grimes due to injury, jacko to bench, tuck to foleys position, mcguane to take griffs spot with griff swinging back should be our round one team imo.Best side I have seen picked so far. Would rather see S.Edwards in the pocket, with short spells in the midfield. He is more damaging around goals than King. Having Griffiths at CHF offers far better structure. No spuds ie Jacko , mcGuanne or White. Also many of the bench players could easily be picked in the starting 18. well done.
Atm i'd take Nahas, only problem is he can seem to fade when he's needed most whilst kingy can lift the whole side when its most needed, that said, nahas was great in the praccy v essendon imo.FB: Morris.... Rance ..... Grimes
HB: Petterd.. Chaplin ... Houli
C: Grigg ...... Cotchin ... Newman
HF: Edwads.. Vickery .... Martin
FF: Nahas... Riewodlt.... McGuane
Ruck: Maric Tuck Deledio
Int: Conca Ellis Jackson Sub: Vlastuin
Emg: Knights Batchelor King
The only spot in question has to be King Vs Nahas imo
I agree with your prognosis 100%, sadly Jacko and McGoof may get games. Thanks mate, just to clarify this is who i'd pick round one, not who I think will be picked, Jackson and McGoof will be in the side, which should push out foley and grimes due to injury, jacko to bench, tuck to foleys position, mcguane to take griffs spot with griff swinging back should be our round one team imo.
Jackson is a real difficult one at the minute. Clearly rated highly internally, but from the outside, seems behind quite a few IMO.
