Preview Season 7, Round 8 v Brisbane: Friday 14 October @ Metricon Stadium

We were absolutely terrible tonight. Didn't bring the required intensity. Far too many passengers and a shambles at either end of the ground.

Simmons is the most baffling selection of all time. Clueless

Button played one of the worst individual games in a Crows AFLW jumper and has been terrible for a long, long time.

We don't have enough players that can create opportunities up forward. Have Woodland, Ponter and Gould if she plays up there. Need more forwards otherwise teams will keep double teaming both Woodland and Ponter.

We are suffering from chopping and changing our defense. Outside of Biddell and Allan who are guns, everyone else is either too slow, too weak, too clueless and seem not to know what to do. Time to pick our best players and stick with them (aka NOT Rajcic, Button or Simmons).

Clarke also comprehensively outcoached with a refusal to address getting smashed on the outside and overcommitment to garbage inside ball.

Charlton, Biddell, Allan best on

Insane that no one has told the Crows mids to equalise numbers on the outside which is where they are destroying us.

We don't need to win the type of clearances we are winning. It's a pointless immediate turnover when they're commiting numbers outside
The worst part of this is it’s the exact same thing that happened in that 2021 GF.

Starcevich just showed them a replay of that game during the week.

That 2nd quarter was literally a carbon copy of the 3rd quarter of the 2021 GF.

Some questionable selection’s obviously but game day coaching stuff was poor, I know they are set with their rotations but Gould was dominating early in the game and then gets shuffled out the game pretty much, Clarke just sat on his hands all game; Ponter showed glimpses in the middle last week not seen in there at all, Hatchard struggling previously Clarke has moved her forward hardly did that tonight. Passengers were unable to be hidden tonight.

Call for it every week but deadwood out and get Waterhouse, Kustermann and Prowse back into this team along with Mueller, if they get downed by a Melbourne or a Brisbane again so be it at least go down swinging without the same old stragglers and tactics handicapping you.

Bit of a reality check tonight. We're a quality side but we're behind Melbourne and Brisbane at the moment.

Some arrogant selections at the moment. Button down back is a howler, continuing to select Simmons. Picking only two forwards which prevented us from trying Ponter in the midfield when needed. Hopefully the club recognises this result for what it is and works on playing our best players, in their best positions. And if someone has shown they don't have it, try someone new. Kustermann could easily have played this week, Waterhouse would have been handy, Mueller hasn't even been tried once, and Prowse must be furious to be sitting on the sidelines so much.

I'd say half the side had bad games. Biddell brilliant, as always. Marinoff pretty good, Randall as courageous as they come. Gould and McKinnon decent, Jones and Allan okay, Munyard and Charlton pretty good. More passengers than not.

Damn I hope Randall is okay. We need her, not necessarily for the next two weeks but definitely in the finals.

And of course it feels petty to say considering we were comprehensively outplayed, but we got absolutely rooted with HTB decisions tonight. Barely got any, but they couldn't wait to pay them against us over and over again. 18 free kicks to 8 says it all there.

Wouldn't have won anyway, but geez it was irritating. It's a common AFLW issue, the best team on the night always seems to get an armchair ride from the umpiring.

Things I got out of this game:
- we need to have more genuine forwards other than Ponter and Woodland. I think Waterhouse needs to be persisted. Our goal kicking has been terrible the last 3 games.

- Simmons needs to be omitted. What exactly does she provide? Marking power/speed/tackling?

- Chelsea is a seriously competitive beast. Busted her lip several occasions, a badly sprained ankle, and still wanted to stay on the ground. Hope the Lions player get a few weeks for landing the elbow to Chelsea’s face while on the ground (effectively, it was a head strike).

- our foot skills are not good enough compared with the sides like Brisbane and Melbourne.

I agree but also disagree. We more often than not get the rough end of the stick with the HTB decisions. When we get the frees, it’s often from clear and obvious decisions. When it goes against us, a lot of it is from marginal calls.

Though probably tonight was the one game where frees wouldn’t have mattered in the overall result. They are clearly the better side tonight.

Hannah Button’s performance will live on in the annals of Crows AFLW history forever; 1 disposal (1 handball) and 3 frees against that resulted in the first 3 goals for the opposition is easily the worst game by a Crow ever.

She literally bunked a week off last week during the season so she could go to a friends wedding and then for some reason was an automatic inclusion, came back in and produced that. That does not set the right standards even if you are mellow, peace and love Doc Clarke.

Watching her try to dance around 3 players like she’s Scott Pendlebury 15m out from goal and getting nailed each time was like watching a slow-motion car crash on repeat.

Watching her do it once near the start of the game, I thought "well she won't try that again!"

I should have known better. That was right up there with Considine in the 2021 GF in terms of all time terrible defensive performances.

I also suspect that teams like Brisbane and Melbourne have done their homework on the Crows and they know exactly which of our players are the real deal and which ones aren't. They consistently target players who are on the likes of Rajcic, Simmons and Button, and those players then know they can safely run off without fear of getting caught.

Credit at least to Rajcic for her goal-saving smother/spoil tonight. That was pretty slick.

Edit: Randall's injury listed as an "ankle ligament sprain". Hopefully that will be a reasonably quick one to recover from.

Sounds like we lost. Geelong didn't win every game and it's good to have a loss to refocus where we need to improve.

Impressed that the girls came across to thank supporters, the boys never do that after a loss (and rarely after an away win). Met a few of the girls family members tonight, (Sarah Allen’s parents just got back from a cruise today and as they said “arsed a game”. Teah Charlton’s folks here too.)

Watching the highlights it looks like a lot of Button htb's in the first half. Needs to handball it instead of hanging onto it. The team didn't seem to play with the same intensity of past weeks. The lions seemed really up for the game.

A bad loss which not end of world but surely exposed what always evident our extreme lack of depth in our side and game style of all hunt ball ,get rid of ball anyway anywhere.
Had some good wins against average teams but was only matter of time a coach would have a squad to play a get the ball out into spaces and our top players wasn't able to drag team over the line.
Also a game that finally exposed myth of a million kicks and million tackles Marinoff as a super star.
Sometimes her kicks go to no-one or to opposition or 5 metres dribbles, but this week she excelled as all went to the opposition.
Understand she works her butt off but good teams create run from her slap it onto boot stuff and god help a forward .
You can't do that in AFL. and you wouldn't get a game, and now with better teams can't do it in AFLW.
Clark also got exposed and simply didn't have a plan B or simple stuff like Hatchard forward as she wasn't able to get in action as mid and is always provides a option up forward.
Then look at best players and Biddell and Jones who were only ones trying to actually pass the ball not mentioned.
Positive this year is some of young ones are taking some big steps forward but will get left behind if dont tidy up our ball use.

That was horrible.
Can't understand how we can be constantly outnumbered at every contest. You've got 1 or two crows mids (Marinoff, Hatchard, Randall usually) going in for contested ball, being tackled by a couple, surrounded by 2-3 more. Watching on screen, it was double the # of brisbane jumpers around the ball. All the time.

Insanely frustrating that when we do hack kick it away from that pack... it lands on a pack where we are similarly outnumbered. Then forward of the ball when brisbane win it, they look up to more free brisbane jumpers leading up at the ball.

Where the hell were the crows players?

Baffling. I want to name names but it would have been half the team - wider shots on the screen show our players paddling along 10m off the play when we don't have the ball. Wtf.

Commentator just mentioned her 11 disposals with zero percent efficiency this quarter :(
This was symptomatic of every one of those being hack blind kicks under pressure while surrounded by a pack of tacklers. Noone on the outside of a pack for her to handball it to. So she boots it. Mad that we didn't even have equal numbers 30m forward of the pack for that though! Nuts!

Insane that no one has told the Crows mids to equalise numbers on the outside which is where they are destroying us.

We really, really got found out with that structure. Don't know if its our structure, or instruction, or just that our bottom 5 players are far worse than brisbanes.

Odd really - Talent and skill wise, I'd suggest we have 3 of hte best 5 players between the two teams, could possibly stretch that to 5 of the top 7. But we have the worst 5 too on the field I think.

Just want to give Chelsea Randall my best wishes. She's a warrior. Hope she's okay.
At least it's an ankle, not a knee. I reckon she'll miss one though, maybe 2. Need to get her right for the finals.

Would anticipate from end of Round 8
Suns v Melb with score line 11-97 would put them equal top with Bris on percentage. Not sure of this outcome.
Freo v Collingwood with Collingwood needing 12.7 % to move over the top of us to 3rd. A score line of 11-38 would do that.

I don't really agree. Marinoff is a great player and very valuable to the team, but that inside mid style of game is not useful when the rest of the team is dysfunctional.

I agree that in the past she was guilty of blindly kicking the ball alot, but she has been quite adept at hitting up players this and last season. She only jams it on the boot when there is nothing worthwhile ahead of her and nobody free to receive it alongside her. Or else it's when she has managed to win the ball while outnumbered and is just playing for territory.

If the rest of our team was functioning properly she would have been very useful, but she can't do it alone.

If anything, it has been Hatchard this season who is guilty of awful kicking going forward, not because she doesn't look first, but she just seems to be shanking a lot of her inside 50s. She's definitely better than that.

Honestly, it feels like half our side has gone backwards this season. I would say each of Jones, Prowse, Martin, Button, Allen, Simmons, Woodland, Tonon, Rajcic, Hatchard and Allan have gone backwards, albeit some starting from higher or lower benchmarks than others.
